September 10th.

Well, another 3 USN BBs have been identified in the waters around Okinawa and what looks like a minimum of 7 or 8 CVEs are covering invasion TFs into the Ishigaki island region. PH is running a LOT of LRCAP over his TFs and bases. It appears that he is trying to cover every TF or base with 100 fighters, split between high ( 37,000+) and low ( under 6,000 feet ) CAP/LRCAP. With 4 bases to cover and 5 or 6 TFs that is a committment of 1,000 fighters to purely defensive missions.

Wonderful !!!! While they're doing that they're not killing my fighters and butchering my pilots before they can upgrade to useful planes. I'm encouraging this misallocation of resources by committing a single Betty kamikaze Daitai and a Toka unit ( basically the Toka is the navy version of the Ki-115 and utterly useless in the face of lots of CAP. On the plus side it only costs 18 HI to build one and so is the cheapest way I can distract him.) I'm also running a dozen A6M8/7 kamis into the region to keep a credible high-altitude threat alive. They won't do much but if I can tie him into the Okinawa/Ishigaki operations for another fortnight then my rebuilding of my air force will be largely complete and when he comes for Japan proper he will find 200 modern fighters flown by pilots with A2A skill of between 75 and 65 over each of my important bases.


My submarines continued to spot lots of USN shipping but none of my night torpedo bombers flew. Ah well, there's always tomorrow. The tactic is solid and I'll just have to wait for it to bear fruit.


Today his bombers his Fukuoka where I had parked a lot of ships I just had no use for. I had also placed my CVEs there as "bomb magnets" and that's just how they worked. About half of all bombs which hit anything hit the 3 CVEs - which are worthless militarily and saved other ships from destruction. My night fighters were unable to force his bombers back and didn't even shoot any down. On the other hand none of the planes committed had radar. Next month though I begin making 48 Ki-102cs per month and those have radar. I expect them to begin shooting down B-29s.

Even notwithstanding that forcing him to conduct night raids lowers the effectiveness of his bombers by a huge factor... If he wasn't getting so tied up in knots by my expenditure of 12 kamis per day around Okinawa, diverting about 1,000 fighters to defensive missions, he could sweep my bases during the daytime and send in devastating daylight raids which would sink scores of ships.

He seems to think he is achieving great success with his night-time raids and I have judged that the best way to encourage him to continue them is to frequently downplay the damage done. It appears that as I do that he believes he "sees through" this maskirovka and it encourages him to view these raids as significant. I can then, truthfully, say that I don't think they're significant at which point he sees through this next layer of maskirovka and redoubles his bombing efforts.

The problem is he isn't looking at the opportunity cost of the bombing in terms of what missions he could be running which would be MORE effective than night-time bombing. To be fair his night-time bombing raids aren't super-effective either. I got about as many hits with a 6 bomber Ki-264 raid as he did with close to 100 B-29s tonight...

Anyways, so far in terms of psyops:
1. He's getting suckered into committing heavy units to the Okinawa region.
2. He is committing 1,000+ fighters to defensive missions when they could hugely damage my airforce if used offensively before I have the next generation of fighters in production ( the first of these begin production next month ).
3. He is committing to night-time bombing raids in a big way.
4. He is susceptible to perceived threats elsewhere ( he seems to have interpreted the movement of my kamis into Truk as a threat to his B-29 bases at Guam etc.... He flew his B-29s out of there a day or so after I moved into Truk with the kamis.
5. Most important of all. He seems to think he is ahead of the curve in the psyops war. I'm going to continue feeding him small numbers of planes daily to encourage that view.
6. He is susceptible to manipulation in target selection. When I based the Ki-43 IIIs into Formosa he obliterated the base with B29s. Over the past week he has also bombed bases after I've moved small numbers of kami-type planes in. Basically if it is a front-line base and it goes from empty to occupied he strongly considers hitting it.I can use that with small fragments of groups to help him waste days of massed bomber strikes.

There's a lot more to surviving against heavy bombers than shooting them down. One of the best ways of surviving is simply to help guide them to hit targets you don't find essential. That's what I'm doing right now and it seems to be working well.


In other news two of my subs sank the CVE Casablanca and the 25 Hellcats aboard her near Ishigaki. The BB Tennessee is also showing up as sunk but I doubt that is true. I also destroyed 3 subs with minefields around the sea of Japan today and two of his ships hit sub-laid minefields around Okinawa. In return 3 of my subs which attacked large USN and RN TFs were also sunk. Such is life.

He is making an effort to kill my barge TFs running troops and supplies to the islands off Kyushu with surfaced subs so I am adding depth-charge carrying barges to these TFs and will consider adding MGBs ( armed with an 8cm gun as well as 25mm guns ) to the TFs also if the depth-charge carrying barges don't stop the subs entirely.

Tomorrow two PT TFs will be ready to operate from Amami Oshima. Over the course of the next fortnight I plan to commit PT TFs to maintain the focus on the Okinawa region and encourage him to keep CAs and CLs in the region --- where my night-time torpedo attacks, minefields and submarines can get at them.


Onto more important matters than the Okinawa sideshow....
The Kuriles are thickening nicely in terms of troops. I have the first Brigade emplaced on an island and almost every island has a CD unit. I am also ordering a large majority of the artillery units in the Home Islands to Hokkaido for later shipment to the Kuriles. In terms of AAA I am ordering every MG AAA unit ( 2cm guns and smaller ) into the Kuriles with a view to providing defence vs dive-bombers. Independent infantry Brigades are loading onto ships ready for transport and engineer units are also beginning to arrive. Given two months I can make the Kuriles a VERY tough nut to crack. The problem is I don't think I have 2 months.

It is 10th September and the Okinawa/Ishigaki operation will be completed by 24th September. I could begin expecting landings in the Kuriles within 2 weeks of that date. By that date I'm not sure I'll have sufficient forts built to enable to Kuriles to hold. Neither will I have enough kamikazes of the right types. So I've decided to focus on the defences of the islands closest to Hokkaido and expand my defences outward as time allows. I'll have a presence on every island but I'll only really thicken out the innermost islands and once I judge them secure I'll extent outward. The inner ring runs from Hokkaido to Etorofu Jima.

I'll go into the defensive plans for the Kuriles later but suffice it to say it features Shinyos, PTs and lots of high-altitude kamikazes combined with as much arty as I can manage... Why so much arty? Well, I know I can't stop any landing he wants to make but if I have enough artillery I might be able to disable and destroy enough squads during the amphibious landing phase to throw the issue into doubt. It isn't ideal but it is the best compromise I can reach in a situation where I can't stop him landing and I can't win the numbers battle once he lands.

11th September:

The Allies are landing at the two islands around Ishigaki. Those islands don't contain any noticeable Japanese forces as I have decided to focus my air transport efforts on making Ishigaki island a little tougher. He may, of course, bypass it but that just means I can base lots of Ohkas, Ki-115s etc there as those planes are floatplane-equipped. So Ishigaki will make a nice little guerilla base.

My submarines are really getting pounded with four more going down today. I think I'm going to leave the waters around Okinawa to my midget subs from now on and will draw the coastal and ocean-going boats back to safer waters.

My night-time level bombers hit Okinawa again putting bombs into four ships:

This night-time raiding will eat him up over time unless he puts significantly more resources into countering it. In a little while when he begins to feel the pressure properly I plan to inform him that day fighters can be used as extempore night fighters. That'll serve as a useful further further option for misallocation of his fighters.


I finally managed to launch a good-sized night-time torpedo attack 49 bombers went in around Naha. I lost three but got a good torpedo hit on the xAP Cape Victory which, I think, sank as a result.

I could have done better but for some reason the G3M3s only dropped bombs despite being near an Air HQ. I'll check it next turn and fix whatever SNAFU occurred.

One thing that puzzles me is the following comment in the CR:
Banzai! - Fujimatsu S. in a G4M3a Betty willing to die for the Emperor

Does this mean that he tried to crash his damaged Betty into a USN ship?


As I said previously he likes to hit bases where airplane icons appear. Today he hit Kanoya - the base my Betties flew from - and destroyed 6 planes on the ground. He's predictable. A bad, bad trait.


The next morning my subs got into the act and torpedoed the xAP Cape Canso which had survived the night-time aerial assault the previous night. So,. that's another xAP which won't be doing too much invading of the Home Islands.

They flew so high only the P-51Hs could get them and even then one of the Ki-74s broke through the CAP and dove on a USN CA. It missed but in another week I should begin making 192 Ki-74s per month and if only 1 in 6 actually hits that's still a hit a day even in the face of strong CAP.

US profligacy showed itself again with something like 800 bombers and fighter-bombers hitting the islands around Ishigaki. Suffice it to say the small numbers of troops I was able to air transport in ( about 400 to 600 troops each ) were pretty much annihilated.


In other news:
My APDs and LSTs are now in full action in Kuriles and with them comes a very useful medium-range lift capability. Already multiple Engineer Bns and AAA Bns are on their way to the two main nodal basis along the Kuriles axis.


His subs sank 3 of my xAKs today. At present I'm a little short on escorts as:
a) so many of them are in being upgraded and
b) most of the rest are being committed to the main effort around the Kuriles. I'm sure PH is mesmerised by the Okinawa axis right now as I'm putting on a fair amount of "show" there but my strategic focus is very much along the Kuriles axis.

In other news I was checking airplane production numbers etc and found that:

1. The Ki-94II is now moved up to December 45 from January 46 and
2. The J7W1 is moved up to November 45 from December 45.


With 300 J7W1s being produced I am expecting them to move up 3 months and become available near the end of September. I'm also expecting the Ki-94 II to enter production before the end of the month also.... It has to move up by 5 months to do so but should rack up 500 R&D points in just under a month. So, by the end of September I can begin fielding some serious top echelon fighters.

One thing that puzzles me is the following comment in the CR:

Yes. This can happen to fighters that against Allied bombers too.

A question re: optimising loading and unloading rates.

I've looked in the manual for some info on this but I can't quite find what I'm looking for. From memory the loading rate of a ship which is docked at a port is 200 x Port Size per day while the unloading rate is something like 200 + ( 200 x Port Size ).


So, at Shanghai ( which is a Level 7 port ) I should be able to load about 1400 tons of supplies etc per day per ship... Thus filling a 2800 ton ship with supplies in two days. I'd appreciate if someone could confirm my understanding of the above stats...


Also, just how much additional loading and unloading does a naval support squad bring? I've read that each squad present allows 10 additional tons of supply to be loaded per day. Is that per ship or over all of the ships available?

Obviously if 240 Naval Support Squads allow an additional 1200 tons to be loaded per day then that would double the effectiveness of a Level 6 port and be a major change to my transportation policy.


Basically I need to increase the efficiency of Shanghai, Keijo and the port feeding Hakodate. I'm running very large numbers of ships through each of those ports and would like to speed their turnaround.

From my experience the naval support squads ad the value for each ship. Was able to unload entire convoys with 500k supply in one or two days with about 1000 naval support at a lvl 6 base. Even the 5k or 6k xAKs.

Well it actually varies; 200 for resources; 100 for supplies; 500 for Oil and Fuel.

Actually your maths is wrong here ... 7*200 = 1400 * 2 = 2800 ... nevertheless because you're talking supplies halve this and you're actually correct[;)]

It's not 10 extra per day; it's per 12 hour pulse.

10 Points per squad, so 10 NS = 100 points per ship but cannot improve the total cargo handling
limitations of the port (72800 @ Lvl 7 port).

eg. At a lvl 3 port without NS; a ship can load 600 supplies a day (100*3)*2
At a Lvl 3 port with 10 NS; a ship can load 800 supplies a day (100*3)+(10*10)*2
but the TF's cannot load more than 11250 supplies a day.

240 NS = 2400 Load Points

Using Shanghai as an example size 7
Normal load = 1400 /day

with NS 240
(240*10)+(100*7)*2 = 6200 per ship loading supplies
Up to the max 72800 per day

No worries - this equation only applies to supplies - also when you hit lvl 8 as I suggested it gets easier still...
[*]With Resources because you have 200 Resource centres there it also gives a bonus for Daily load and Cargo limits.
[*]This equates to 200*20 = 4000 + 2800 = 6800 /day per ship & 72800 + 4000 = 76800 Daily limit for Resources
[*]The same applies for OilRefineries ... but you have none at Shanghai, but also effects your offloading of Fuel ...

I think PH must be getting some good advice in his thread since he has stopped using his B-29s so tactically and has hit the HI at Shanghai very heavily. Hopefully people are sticking to reading one or the other or only giving general advice... Someone contacted me recently saying that some fairly specific advice to hit things I had IDed as weaknesses in this AAR was being given by someone in PH's AAR. I'm going to rein in the specificity of some of what I post here as a result and won't be giving atoll by atoll fortification and garrison levels as I can see PH's targetting and asset usage changing in a manner precisely mirroring what I spoke about and what was seemingly said in his AAR.

It could be chance, of course, but the suddenness of targetting changes following on from the raising of concern regarding the specificity of advice being given does make me wonder. Of course maybe people just analysed the situation perfectly based ONLY on data contained within PH's AAR. I think, however, it is more likely that they analysed the situation based on data contained in both AARs and then based advice on information PH couldn't have.

So, regrettably, I am modifying the plan for this AAR.... BTW I don't care to enter a discussion about who said what. I specifically asked not to know any names etc. I just don't want the game ruined by people giving analyses in PH's AAR which uses data they can't have except by reading this AAR. Since I can't rely on common sense I will rely on self-censorship in terms of not giving the relevant data anymore. I also don't think there was anything malicious in what anyone may or may not have done. From the very broad strokes concerns I heard of it just seems to be a case of analysis with the benefit of data in one side of an AAR being posted to another side of the AAR. I consider that a breach of FOW.


Anyways, with that unpleasantness out of the way onto the turn.... I'm going to post the CR as:
a) a lot happened and
b) I'm going to deal a LOT more with day to day stuff than grand strategic planning and analysis. As PH commits to a specific strategy I can talk about counters but I won't be going into analyses of his intentions or my weaknesses nearly as much in the future. I don't have faith that someone won't try to appear prescient by having their analysis in PH's thread strangely mirror mine...

This is a good result. It is the 2nd CVE the operations around Ishigaki have cost PH.

The cost to my subs is a bit high though so I am going to redeploy them elsewhere and replace their guerilla actions with another, more expendable asset --- which, evidently, I'm not going to detail here until it goes into action. Once bitten, twice shy.

Interesting, the CVEs don't carry night-fighters. Admittedly I lost a Betty but I did manage to launch 8 torpedoes and over time, eventually, some of these night-time torpedo attacks on CVEs/CVLs and CVs are going to score hits, particularly as my pilot experience increases.

Hmm, PH's new strategy comes into play. He is focussing on ports and HI. Right now he's eliminating the HI outside Japan and hitting the ports within Japan at night but soon I expect he'll begin night bombing of Japanese HI in the Home Islands. Later he'll transition to daylight bombing. I have plans to counter this obviously but loose lips sink ships.

Actually they lost 7 P-51Hs which is only a day's supply of them. I lost quite a few Franks and Tonys but, fortunately, I only lost the same number of pilots....

Over the course of the day I downed 17 P-47Ns, 7 P-51 Hs and 15 P-51Ds for a total of 39 Allied 1st line fighters destroyed with their pilots. I lost 48 Ki-84bs ( obsolescent already ) and 27 Ki-100 Is ( better but still 2nd line ) but, crucially, only 39 pilots also. I have to survive another 2 weeks of this and then significantly better fighters will begin coming off the production line. I have reserves of some 800 or so 2nd-line fighters and so that should see me through 2 more weeks. I also have a plan to eke them out more but won't go into that here until the 2 weeks are well and truly over.

Sheer numbers and fatigue just whittled the Japanese down. I only had 150 fighters here but even if I'd had 200 they'd have been worn down before the bombers arrived. I've got to start aiming for 300 Japanese fighters per base I want to defend and more for significant HI bases.

Overall losses for the day were 99 for the Japanese ( mostly comprising the 75 Franks and Tonys ) and 66 for the Allies. No ops losses for the CVE I hit have appeared but it will almost certainly sink. CVEs don't survive two good torpedo hits with an ammo/fuel storage explosion. So, I can add another 27 planes to my total to make it 93 for the Allies. Not too bad, over the last few days some level of parity in losses has been achieved. Of course the Allies have a lot more than me but even getting parity for Japan in such difficult circumstances is something I'm happy with.

2) Yokosuka Naval Base Force in Yokohama also can upgrade TOE on rest training op mode. Its late 44 TOE has a whopping 96 x 12.7 cm DP and 16 x 8 cm DP vs the same start as Kure (8 and 16 guns). Thats a gain of 88 12.7 cm DP guns.

That's going to eat a lot of armaments isn't it? I haven't played a downfall scenario so I've no clue what nemo's economy looks like but I have to assume he's on a clock e.g. it probably is tolerable right now but is in the process of shutting down between resource starvation and bombing.

In Downfall you have a substantial armaments pool to start with. Not sure about this one though ...

A couple of things:-

Is it possible that the Betty-launched Ohka doesn't work due to the device not being available until 1/46?

I have just introduced the A7M3-J (with the "UP" cannon) into my Downfall AI game and it eats bombers alive. Or at least the 2Es. It also seems very good at running away from fighters. This is in an airgroup with > 60 experience.

The Japanese economy is starving. There isn't enough fuel to keep the HI I have running through the end of the game. Neither are there sufficient resources. I figure I can just about keep 2,500 HI running through war's end. That's why I'm not massively bothered about the destruction of this HI. He has reduced me from some 4,600 HI to about 4,400 HI. Since I can actually only keep 2,500 HI running it really only becomes a problem for me when he reduces me below this level. That gives me some leeway and pretty much means that I just need to keep Osaka running in order to stay in the game.

Of course once he gets the 12 nukes then Osaka will be utterly torched and we'll see how I can do on just the planes etc I've managed to produce until then. That's one reason I was relaxed about all those A-bombs. Really he needs 2, maybe 3 to close Osaka totally as a HI centre. The other 12 will struggle to find any worthwhile targets. Once Osaka is closed all the rest of my industry is pretty meaningless. Right now he appears to be nerving himself up for a major daylight raid of one of the Home Island HI centres.

The Ohka issue is due to me making an error in the editor. Simple as that.


As to the A7M3-J.... I just don't see why it would work better than ordinary day fighters vs bombers? Most of the USAAF bombers have ball turrets in the bottom of the fuselage and so should eat those A7M3-Js alive.... Could you post some CRs in a war room thread re: the A7M3J? It just seems to me that it would be fought off by the massed defensive fire.

I think heavy bomber loss ratios are also hugely elevated relative to history though. I think the "tlerable" loss ratio on a heavy bomber raid on a defended target was 3%. Even a debacle like Schweinfurt was, what, 13% losses?

So I think the game basically runs bombing raids in fast forward. Losses are too high, but so are effects.

Overall about 50 Japanese fighters were downed in return for about 30 USAAF ones. Then 500 B-29s came in to bomb the airfield and another 70 planes were destroyed on the ground. On the plus side every day is hugely helpful in building the defences of Japan. The AAA, CD gun, Artillery and Armour redeployments are now done. Next will be infantry redeployments.

Well, the Patsys got through. One 20mm AAA mount got destroyed while the other Patsy wasted itself on the deck armour. Those 500 Kg bombs don't have the power to punch through the deck armour.

Japanese Unit(s) Wiped Out at Miyako-jima by attrition!!!

Actually those base TOE upgrades should be available unless someone went in and deliberately turned them off in the scenario editor. In the official downfall scenario it looks to me like they are available. The units simply have to be put to rest/training mode and their TOE should upgrade within a few turns.

As far as I am aware you don't need to go into REST/Training mode to upgrade TO&Es.

I've had many units upgrade their TO&Es while they are in combat mode etc.
