it probably isn´t a war winner for me but considering mortar could really really limit his losses I am quite happy with such an attack... those ships were empty but they are done... the Vindicator squadron that was shot up a couple of turns ago was upgraded to SBD-2 and sent back to the front immedietely and did some damage... if we continue like that then the ship count will go up and up in the PM/Horn Island area... guess we are somewhere around two or three dozen ships so far, most valuable being the CVL that was sunk by a sub...

as expected, the enemy lands directly at Batavia... the constant A2G attacks took care of my CD unit so that isn´t a threat to the invasion and nothing else is left there (except a small unit that just tried to go through the hex) but I still don´t understand why landing at a base that might still have some coast defense and for sure there are a lot of mines left when there are several empty bases right next to Batavia...

I am gathering my carriers and the rest of my fleet North of Townsville to strike the enemy convoys that seem to now head from Horn Island to Port Moresby... I´m trying to strike from 6 hexes to see my divebombers using 1000lb bombs... if all goes well, the enemy will end up one or two hexes NW of Port Moresby and we are in range and have good weather to trash them... if mortar doesn´t surprise me with KB popping up next to Townsville then he is again more than careless and he will pay for it for sure... got three dozen patrol aircraft searching the area around PM but KB hasn´t been spotted so far...

bet none of these units got more prep for this target than 20... now go ahead use dozens of APA/AKA/LST, an amphib HQ and try to land a USMC division with twice the prep these units have and look at it being 60-80% disabled just from landing at an EMPTY island and then tell me this design isn´t either biased or borked... some decisions will always stay a mistery to me...


and what about my attempt to attack the enemy convoys heading from Horn Island to Port Moresby? Well, the enemy didn´t move a single hex, which means my carriers were exactly ONE hex short to strike at the fully loaden enemy troop transports still sitting North West of Port Moresby... this not being bad enough, now KB is coming into play too... my carriers weren´t spotted so I will continue my operation because I doubt mortar will set KB to full speed to move into the area, he probably just moves down the "East" side of the island to come to cover his invasion... so my carriers will move further NW to stay at least 9 hexes away of KB which I expect to end up just off Buna or a little further East... this should mean our carriers are out of range (should NOT react) but we would still be in range of the enemy convoys next turn... a strong cruiser squadron is moving to Port Moresby to be there during the day to keep the enemy from landing... this will of course put my cruiser into close range of KB but we will have some 160 fighters at Port Moresby being set to 80% Cap 20% rest, this should mean at least some trouble to KB´s bomber units... if the enemy moves for PM this turn already his convoys won´t be there during the night and during the day my cruisers should have equal chance against the enemy cruisers that are for sure covering all these convoys, have not spotted any BBs yet... of course it could end in a total catastrophe if my carriers actually end up in range of KB, this only depends on KB´s speed settings now I guess... like I´ve said, I don´t want to lose PM, same goes for Darwin and both areas will be defended at more or less all cost, at least I´m taking quite some risk to defend them which doesn´t mean I would like to sacrifice my carriers... same goes for my reinforcement convoys, those will head back to Townsville, no reason to risk them at the moment...

as you can see, KB moved one hex shorter than we´ve expected but still ended up at the expected 9 hex to our carriers... as the last two days, the IJN convoys didn´t move and this time we moved close enough to also see our TBD attacking at 5 hexes so we were in perfect strike range... knowing that US torpedo bombers are only worth 1/10 of IJN torp bombers, we have set them to attack with bombs as this is something they are able to do... the two carrier TFs launch a perfectly coordinated strike and overcast meant perfect weather... in total 181 bombers were attacking three or four different TFs, mainly focussing on the enemy troop transports that carry most of the troops that took Horn Island so that includes also an IJA division that is hit hard now... a good number of bombers also attack the cruiser squadron that is covering the troop convoys, as expected there are no enemy BBs around... heavy cruiser Furutaka takes a 1000lb bomb that blows up her magazine which was pretty much the start of the carnage... Myoko, Kako and Haguro all take 1000lb bombs that should do some damage, none of them shows up being heavily damaged though... nevertheless I usually expect an IJN heavy cruiser to sink after taking three 1000lb bombs while being 1500 miles away of the next major port... Kinugasa also took a 1000lb bomb but seems not to be effected at all... now it´s definetely nice to see those heavy cruisers being hit (the biggest threat of all IJN ships besids their carriers) but the main target of course were the transports... I expect 15-17 of them being sunk today, all carrying troops and while it only shows some 3800 casualties during the attack, I expect to have destroyed major parts of the enemy division plus other smaller units...

this attack means already to have stopped the reinforcement of IJ troops at PM cold and we´re going to try to wreck havoc within what is left of the enemy convoys... having convoys full of troops for days in the area without KB nearby is a little overconfident, I had my carriers in the area for weeks already, sitting under a 200 fighter Cap umbrella at Townsville so all that had to happen was KB to move back to Rabaul or Truk, which it does, leaving those precious convoys alone for too long...

KB was totally clouded in but that didn´t stop it from launching a fully coordinated strike... what is obvious is that this isn´t a fully combined KB, I think there is at least one carrier missing... out of the roughly 160 fighters on Cap at PM we see only 93 intercepting which is a totally frustrating ratio and we pay the price in having fighters destroyed on the ground as well as not providing as much air cover for the cruisers as expected... nevertheless a good number of fighters were able to break through the escorts and targeting the bombers which took a beating... not enough to stop them from sinking CA Louisville and causing damage to other ships of the task force... seeing parts of the enemy bombers being on airfield attack pretty much confirms my thoughts that the enemy didn´t expect us to be in the area, let alone attacking with our carriers or having this cruiser squadron at Port Moresby... losing that heavy cruiser is something I don´t like but it was worth it this time and I think we trade Louisville for three enemy CA being sunk while all the fully loaden transports would have been worth it already...

and what happened in the afternoon? NOTHING!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR... no strikes being launched... while we still had 180 bombers on our carriers and there was nice weather over both our carriers and the enemy convoys in range - NO STRIKE... pfff...

mission accomplished though, Port Moresby is absolutely safe for the moment and if he wants to take the place then he has to pick up some other division and if he isn´t able to do that in the next couple of weeks he won´t have the oh so magic amphib bonus anymore so any landing attempt will have serious problem... the enemy carriers lost about 40% of the available bombers so I wouldn´t expect a full speed movement towards our carriers but I´m not sure mortar thinks the same because his actions weren´t really foreseeable in the past and knowing what superhuman IJN carrier bombers are I don´t want to have 80 of them attacking my carriers if I don´t have to. So that means my carriers will return to Townsville to sit under a nice Cap umbrella in more or less total safety while I have dispatched some cruiser squadrons to go hunt down the rest of the enemy fleet which is suspected to either try bringing everything afloat to Port Moresby to unload there or, more likely, to go to Horn Island to land the troops at their friendly base... all heavy cruisers have been hit and most of them are heavily damaged and we have at least twice the number of heavy cruisers so let´s see what the next days will bring...

wow, really don´t know what I love more, the idiotic Japanese amphib bonus that has no historic justification at all or the ground combat model of this GAME... both go hand in hand and then we come up with threads about how overpowered Allied 4E bombers are... speaking as a truly Japanese fanboy of WITP times, no matter how you see it, if you have read books about how real life looked like and you still think the Japanese aren´t given truly massive goodies for game balance they never had in real life, then I suggest to pick up those books and have a look again...

and yes, it is and always was only my fault to see this happening, as I should have known better... so only blame me, don´t blame the amphib bonus, no matter how silly it is...[&o] nevertheless mortar is using the amphib bonus to good effect, no matter how flawed his advances on Singapore and Clark Field were (both places saw the IJA being kicked out) and how his invasions have gone so far, with the amphib bonus he took all those places he wanted to do... if he continues doing it that way, he will have a real problem that starts on 1st April when the iditioc bonus is no more and the Japanese actually also need preparation for invasions...

saving Port Moresby and dishing out that blow to the enemy convoys down there was a big victory but the loss of the two bgds at Port Blair was a defeat so this turn wasn´t as good as it could have been, especially as my carriers didn´t launch strikes in the afternoon for no reason...

we achieved a nice kill ratio today but it could have been far better as I´ve expected at leat some 120-130 fighters at Port Moresby being airborne with all the radar I have there and the high Cap %... with those losses and only being a little more than two months into the war, shouldn´t the enemy run low on Zeroes, Vals and Kates already?

mortar stated in his email that I shouldn´t worry about him quitting if he loses KB... then I watched the replay as I´ve wondered what made him making that comment as losing those KB aircraft yesterday doesn´t mean losing KB... [&:]

and that is my SAG that was covering my carriers... both my carriers as well as KB were retreating... damn it, this means mortar actually did what I would have expected everyone to do, which actually means he didn´t do what I expected him to do [:D] lol... so instead of launching strikes from my carriers against his remaining ships my carriers are at Townsville now and ALL my cruiser squadrons missed the numerous enemy TFs that have been dispersed in the area as they did NOT go back to Horn Island nor did they try to make Port Moresby... means nothing of what I´ve expected actually happened... grmpf... ok, my carriers will stay at Townsville while my cruisers will try to hunt down the enemy convoys that are fleeing NW towards the SRA...

this is one of the cruiser squadron that is hunting down the fleeing ships NW or Horn Island and mortar dispatched a single DD to stop me... well, a single DD is easily enough to stop a force of three modern US heavy cruisers that are screened by 8 modern US destroyers... Chicago is sunk outrigth and Northampton suffered no less than 95 flt damage and was scuttled during the day... I really love how biased the game is for game purpose, what makes me sick is the ongoing "oh the Allied are soooo overpowered" screaming since day one of the announcement of AE... I still don´t know why Pauk left the forum even before AE came out saying AE is purely the Allied Edition... I just don´t get it...

again, this is one of those results that might happen ONCE or TWICE in the whole war, what really strikes is how often I use far superior force and get my head handed, same in other AARs en masse... and why do I never see those things happen when a single US DD encounters such a Japanese force? Why???

The Japanese DD happily sailed away totally unscratched after sinking two Allied heavy cruisers sitting in the middle of 8 Allied DD... KB managed to sink a single CA, this single DD sunk two in one go... I bet it won´t take two months until the next Japanese super hero result pops up, I bet... oh mind you, there were the laser guided long lance, the unlimited Japanese production capacity and the all deciding massed fleet clash during the night at 2000 yards that won the war for the Japanese... or was that only what they were dreaming of?

what a turn, I could but hey, my fault again... I know how the game works, I do give tips not to do this or that, it is my fault to engage enemy ships, even if they were totally shot up before and are mostly fleeing... it is nothing but my fault because I know how the game is designed and how it has been working for years already...

so lean back, build up, use your ships only to escort your carriers, use hundreds of 4Es from level 9 bases and move forward one by one... totally boring, but the biased design forces you to do so, no matter if early 42 or late 45, the way it is designed means a single Japanese ship is worth 3 or 4 Allied ships of the same class... so don´t engage them...

that´s why I think the "no mines in the Pacific" design of AE was wrong because they´ve changed the ability of mines but did absolutely nothing about how easiy it is to clear mines, not comparable to real life at all... sorry guys, a more or less balanced WITP system was "enhanced" into an unbalanced AE system... we drop 40 mines, 32 are swept an hour later... if you try to make the use of mines more realistic, then also try to make the minesweeping more realistic...

this probably will be the only success the Dutch airforce on Java is going to achieve... 90% of our bombers launch in a coordinated strike at 8 hexes and if the enemy is sitting at a base it usually is no problem to find them... the bombers drop only one bomb each at low nav but that´s enough against enemy freighters unloading here... halve a dozen enemy freighters should make up for the points lost all the bombers are worth it when they will finally either die on the ground or being shot down by enemy Cap... actually I expect the enemy to take out the bombers´ base next turn, I can´t fly my bombers out as I don´t have any bases left I could conduct air ops in that region...

we have a major reinforcement convoy reaching Port Moresby bringing troops and some supply... I have separate supply convoys coming in as I want to have the troop transport leaving asap again... I think with this convoy reaching Port Moresby the enemy will need at least three of his divisions to achieve something here and he won´t be able to bring them as long as the amphib bonus is still active so the chances to never lose PM are 3:1 IMO now... for the near future PM is totally save and if mortar isn´t concentrating all his strenght onto this area then we will be able to further increase our strenght here... not losing PM and Darwin means not being set a year back for the assault into vital Japanese areas... for me, Darwin and Port Moresby are much more important than bases like Pearl Harbour or Ceylon for example... Darwin and Port Moresby are coming right after India, Australia and the West Coast in their importance to me, everything else is in an order behind that...

minelayers going to Darwin... offensive mines have become nearly 100% useless in AE, defensive minefields are only useful in conjunction with heavy CD to "defend" the minefield and Darwin has some nice CD which will be further increased in the near future... Darwin got a level 8 airfield already, further building up to reach lvl 9 soon which means we´ve got a huge airfield there in March 41 already, supplies should be no problem, same goes for the defense of the place because if mortar really decides to take this highly important base then it will cost him... it´s not impossible (except the West Coast I don´t see any target as impossible for the Japanese until mid 42) but it would take a maximized effort and so far I haven´t seen such operations and without the amphib bonus it will only be harder for him to achieve that...

I have noticed the same thing in my games with the Mark 10 dud rate....Hard to be upset when most of ones modern subs can not get a torpedo to
work but when no S boats can get an explosion it seems......Messed up..[:@]

I don´t know where it comes from, there should be a 4:1 chance for every Mk-10 hit to detonate which is by far not true so far in this game... it evens out (at least it should) over the long run but so far it is astonishing how many MK-10 or Dutch torps hit but fail to detonate... [:(]

I try to be a little more positive (yes, I try[:D]), so I have to remember the enemy CVL that was sunk by MK-10 torps off Horn Island... remembering my girl friend saying "you are not positive enough for that game..." [:D]

the oh so great Uranami strikes gain... this time out of torps (otherwhise Chester would be sunk already) Uranami decided to put three shells into Chester then sailing away again after taking a shell in the super structure... well done Allied task force, WELL DONE!!!

I have dispatched my three best US destroyers in this area to attack a big convoy at Ambon and this is the result... unlike the IJN where three DD would sink halve of such a convoy including at least three modern US BB we sink a TB and manage to damage two freigthers and a PB of which none will probably sink... well done US Navy once again... and then the slow convoy of freighters manages to escape my 30+ knot destroyers...

great, an empty supply convoy that is retiring from Colombo is targetted by mini KB that suddenly pops up... the usual 50% or more hit rate of IJN torp bombers kill 3 ships outright... the British miss naval patrol squadrons and the couple of aircraft that are flying nav search in this area failed to pick up this incoming task force... it could be worse as I'm in the process of reinforcing Ceylon with a division plus support units so if that convoy would run into mini KB it could be really bad... the reinforce convoy is about three or four days´ movement further North and will be redirected immedietely until mini KB leaves the area again...

really nice raid of mortar, the afternoon strike of mini KB takes out more or less the whole convoy... another 63% hit rate of the IJN super heroes... I´ve had an AS in this convoy, not deliberately... so far I´ve always spotted KB when mortar tried to slip through into vital areas to hunt some convoys but mini KB attacked in an area I´m more or less blind... wouldn´t matter most of the time as I don´t have shipping in this area but the appearance was well timed in this case, arriving a couple of days earlier would have been worse as the ships would then be loaded with supply...

great, silly amphib bonus drives me mad... so what, the enemy throws several unprepared divisions onto the beaches at Port Blair (after a failed invasion earlier) and then the place falls to a single shock attack... this then alerts me and I start to pick up troops for Ceylon as those Ind bgd that were defending Port Blair are now missing on Ceylon and what happens? The enemy is faster in picking up those unprepped troops from Port Blair to throw them again unprepped onto Ceylon than me in bringing in reinforcements to defend the place. Sorry, I guess I have never had a PBEM in all the years that showed so clearly how totally unrealistic and totally dumb that Japanese amphib bonus is. [8|]

Like I´ve said before, leave that bonus to historic units for their historic targets but get rid of it for all those unhistoric targets because in real life the Japanese were well prepared for their targets and that is where the amphib bonus design may have origined but the way it turns out in the game is truly dumb. The way it is now all you can do is to hope 31st March is coming around soon because otherwise the stupidity just goes on and on. Seeing Imperial Guards landing here already makes me sure Ceylon is lost as there are only 300 av defending Colombo and Imp Guards won´t be the only div landing here...

losing Ceylon (I sure will) isn´t what really strikes me as Ceylon is not one of the places I do want to hold at all cost and it can be taken back quite easily in the not so far future, it´s more like the fact that the only reason I am going to lose it is the amphib bonus once more, otherwise those invasion troops would now either be trashed or whould still be prepping for Port Blair... of course, the enemy could not go for Port Blair at all (if no amphib bonus) and go for Ceylon instead (which would be fine for me) but then I would still own Port Blair with all those Ind bgd there... the way it is now is just rubbish as the Japanese go wild and land unprepared at different places outside historical targets in short order which isn´t even what that silly bonus was meant to be for... once more, I am aware of the game mechanics so don´t blame silly mechanics but blame myself for not adopting to them...

nice, Wenchow is a wood/rough hex and we built some forts so the first enemy assault here was easily repelled and this against a far superior enemy force... I don´t doubt that we are going to lose the place though, the only reason I kept troops here was to buy me some time elsewhere in China or (if the enemy doesn´t go for Wenchow) to have a base to refuel my subs operating in the Japanese shipping lanes (without success)...

the enemy keeps unloading at Koggala and we let him do so as we don´t really have offensive power when it comes down to the airforce and as long as mini KB is around it doesn´t make sense to send in the Navy... we´ve got a BB, several CA/CL and some DD (all British so they should be quite competent) in the area that can reach the invasion beachhed in one turn but as it stands now we are going to hold them back...

I dare to say that this was clearly a bad idea... a failed deliberate attack yesterday that causes high disruption and then a shock attack the next day (not that disruption would show up as a (-) for the attacker)? Bad idea, really bad idea... the enemy has the equivalent of more than 2 IJA divs disabled in two turns for little gain... still doesn´t change the fact that we are going to lose Wenchow and we are going to lose more squads destroyed than the enemy in his failed attacks and disablements mean nothing, only destroyed squads matter and due to the inevitable retreat of my troops we will suffer a lot of destroyed squads...
