Today's raid cost 4 x B-17E (2 x A2A + 2 x ops) versus 1 x Zero for only 1 runway hit. At Manila the defenders were weakened further but did punish the attackers.

In the good news department, the ground forces moving out of Hengyang drew some air attacks, taking a bit of pressure off of the forces dug in to the south. Even better, those forces held again, and strongly so.

Now an unknown number of Imperial units are moving from the combat area NE to the river crossing. There are also units advancing on Changsha. It seems there is a little smoke being let across the battle area to obscure the Empire's tactics! The infantry sallies across the river tomorrow with the accompanying shock attack. The Chinese Air Force is deploying to Hengyang with three aims. A) Protect the river crossing troops from air harassment; B) disrupt the unit that holds the river-crossing; C) slow down movement of the Imperial forces farther south in the other battle area.

The limited counter attack crossing the river from Hengyang worked better than expected against a unit that was smaller than expected. I figured a good regiment was there. Or, if they really wanted to guard the road junction then a division. I doubted that as divisions are not trivial to come by. First, there was one air attack on the forces crossing the river and did get through to the troops but was bloodied and probably blunted by the AVG CAP.

Following that it was the Chinese' turn as 21 x SB-III medium bombers hit the Kyuko Naval Guard Unit. That's right - naval guard unit. Then came 2 small attacks by Chinese aviation on the Imperial troops to the south to slow them down. In all 3 cases the Chinese bombers flew without escort! They should have had some of the AVG for escort, plus some additional bombers, but what flew is what flew and it paid off as there were no Japanese fighters opposing the raids. The came the over-match and the outright destruction of the Kyuko Naval Guard Unit.

Elsewhere part of the IJA 2nd Division began reducing the ex-Port Moresby defenders. The reduction of Java likewise continued with the elimination of a trapped base force from Soerabaja. PG Charleston is heading to Auckland under escort of DMS Long. Still no sign of the Imperial carriers.

You can see on the map below that the Imperial units to the south of the road junction where the Kyuko Naval Guard Unit was just annihilated appear to have stopped moving north. Hopefully that is the case and not merely FOW. One of the units that just made the river crossing is now moving south at full speed to open the movement path along the road for the defenders there. Complicating matters, there are now 2 Imperial units in Changsha. To the east, where they came from, are another 9. The often seen movement of some forces there to the SW might be totally a feint by SVC.

There were a number of air battles over and near Hengyang, and the results were mixed, a total of about 16 Allied versus about 17 Japanese. The Allies did keep Imperial bombers from hitting the ground troops very hard, though. There are still those 2 Imperial units in Changsha but now a total seen of 14 more just to the east and moving on the city.

Lexington and Saratoga had their 8" guns hoisted off today. The heart says keep them but the head says make room for more AA guns. As aircraft have yet to seriously hurt anything large than a diminutive Japanese CL this was hotly debated.

A small tanker convoy with 37k fuel arrived at Sydney and is unloading.

Lots of air battles over Hengyang! The Chinese Air Force/AVG team held its own eve though badly outnumbered. The base is badly damaged and the fighters will have to move to avoid being pummeled on the ground, but a blow was struck for the loss of only 1 pilot KIA. To the south the door along the road has been opened (the unit arrived and changed hex side control) and the dug in units can now begin an orderly retreat to Hengyang.

Merchants at Darwin have been attacked numerous times over two or more days and evaded damage each time. As the attacks seem to be coming from Koepang the convoys have been routed to the eastern side of Australia or to Normanton. The Dutch at Tjilatjap quite stoutly held off an Imperial attack.

Even though the exit along the road was open last turn, only one LCU was actually moving. Those that were dug in all remained in their fortifications in case the Emperor's troops tried to attack them as they were leaving. This deliberate attack was handled roughly enough, if SVC had ordered a shock attack the Imperial casualties would have been epic.

Still no whiff of the Imperial carriers. The DEI sure looks different to Allied eyes now.

Back in the saddle after a short break. The usual in most places, including heavy air attacks on Hengyang. A bombardment attack at Clark Field showed that the Imperial troops have almost 3 to 1 superiority and so might be ready to attack. The survivors of Port Moresby are further reduced and are down to 2 units. Only the 15th RAN Base Force still has elements that can be airlifted out, and more than 20 flying boats are doing just that. In the DEI only Tarakan still holds the upper hand, but isolated they fight the lonely fight. SigInt says they will soon have more guests.

These are the Imperial ships sunk according to Intel. Only 60 points worth are verified.

Lots of pounding from the air in the active areas - China, Philippines, Java, Burma. The Empire is cleaning up bases yet to be occupied and forces surviving in the wild, such as the base force remnants near Port Moresby that were wiped out this day. A surprisingly good result for the Allies at Clark Field.

Destroyed Imperial squads are always good. No sign of where SVC has ordered the Imperial carriers. IJA ground units are again on the move near Hengyang, as seen below, perhaps to interfere with the withdrawal of the units that dug in and fought in the rough terrain on the road from Kukong.

A lightly escorted convoy intent on Tarakan allowed themselves to be chased away by 2 very lonely PT boats which are unable to make any other base. Again much pounding from the air in all active theaters. At Clark Field a bombardment by the Imperials resulted in:

No sign of Imperial carriers. The USA provisional squadrons - fighters and dive bombers - withdraw in a week. That will leave a bit of a gap in Australia's air defenses, but replacement fighters and bombers will arrive only shortly behind, although they will take a bit to get fully up to speed. The surprise of the day was a shock attack at Clark Field, with the results very good for the Allies.

Destroyed Imperial squads are always good, and added to the disablements they remove the equivalent almost a full infantry division until recovery. It was a near run thing as the odds were just shy of 2 to 1, but in the event a miss was as good as a mile.

The boys at Changsha did well until the last Imperial sweep, at which point they were exhausted and lost enough planes to bring the day roughly even. Now they are worn down enough they need to pull back. Near Hengyang the units formerly dug-in to the south in the rough terrain have now left that hex and are in the clear hex on the road just south of Hengyang. There they join several units that waited for them and now all are proceeding to the city. Coincident with their arrival is that of 4 unknown strength Imperial units from the east. Other Imperial units are seen giving chase from the south. The Chinese units moving in the open have over 1,800 AV strength and another >1,100 AV are in the city. Fortifications are level 4 plus 3%, building being hampered by the successful enemy bombing campaign. Here is a look at China.

The beatings from the air continued, and on the road in the clear terrain south of Hengyang the beatings were severe as predicted. Over 50 combat squads and a like number of non-combat squads disabled. Thank goodness the troops are moving in combat formations. Over Java some intrepid Dutch flying boat crews made attacks on Imperial ships but their 300kg SAP bombs fell in the water. The day on the ground was an entirely different story. On Java the Dutch held the line, but of course all of their troops are on that front line and can't be relieved.

The positions at Tjilatjap are being ground down with roughly proportional looking disablements. At Bandoeng are the more substantial Dutch combat units in great defensive terrain. The Imperial troops attacked while fatigued, which implies that they are trying to make up time. That means the Dutch are doing a good job, and it also resulted in the Imperial forces taking it on the chin assaulting in such conditions.

In China results were also quite favorable. Near Ichang these Chinese troops have had a long time to dig in, and lately they have been bombarded consistently by the IJA troops in-hex. That has raised their experience.

In the open near Hengyang, a greatly inferior IJA force attacked the withdrawing Chinese armies and while taking massive casualties probably got off light considering the circumstances. This attack might have been designed to induce the withdrawing armies to stop and attack those IJA forces while the main IJA horde catches up to smash the Chinese in the open.

Those two lonely PT boats at Tarakan again chased off a convoy or else SVC would have been overseeing 11 amphibious operations this day instead of 10.

The entire Imperial horde has caught up to the withdrawing Chinese armies south of Hengyang. Obviously they fast marched (move mode). The problem is that all the Chinese units that started their (combat mode) march in the rough terrain are about to cross the river, whereas the 4 x corps that held the clear terrain for them will take an extra day. So, those 4 corps have been ordered to fast march and the Allied air forces will make an appearance. Hopefully they will not be destroyed. All available fighter units are at Hengyang, and all available bomber units are at Changsha. The fighters will not fly LRCAP. instead they will fly CAP and escort the bombers, all of which will hit the Imperial formations at 4,000ft. As you can see in the map below, SVC has ordered units at Pingsiang to move north and cut the rail line to Changsha.

The boys all made Hengyang and without any air attacks on them! The weather was favorable, I think, keeping the Imperial birds at bay. meanwhile our bombers out of Changsha attacked ground units at Wuchang because I fumbled their orders. No air losses, and now all groups have withdrawn to rearward again. There was no other combat of note aside from the conquests listed above. SVC is clearing up low intensity areas while his major forces grind through the Allies' strongholds.

Combat action was light today. One IJN PB was taken in the Java Sea, and the usual plethora of Imperial air raids were endured. The invading infantry has largely pulled back from Clark Field, both to relieve supply strain from over stacking and surely for some to R&R.

14 Imperial units at Clark Field and 20 in Manila. I'm sure they are building up supply and taking R&R for the next go around, meanwhile the Allied troops wither away with no supplies. Bataan has supplies, purposely hoarded to keep the troops there strong. Those supplies will of course evaporate when the forces in Clark are forced to retreat, but the hope is that the strong state of the forces already at Bataan will take a bite out of any early attacks made there by the Empire.

CV Hornet arrived today and will make for the West Coast for her April '42 upgrade. The two large fast convoys are both unloading at Sydney. The place is stuffed with aircraft. Troops, mostly support types that will help with aviation support will start unloading tonight. Every spare space on the ships was stuffed with supplies. Dehydrated tank spare parts for all!

PG Charleston has made Auckland and will need 3 weeks in the ship yard. The (empty) aircraft convoy has left Sydney for the US while the the troop convoy continues to unload there. CVL Zuiho is confirmed still afloat, but where and doing what are unknown. There are other hold-outs aside from Bandoeng and some of them can be seen on this map. Of course most only await enough of the Empire's attention to fall...

A quiet day by comparison to most since the start of the war. A Dutch fighter shot down 1 Nell out of 64 that seemed to get separated from their escort during the attack. There were none of the usual mass of air attacks on Hengyang, probably due to the foul weather over the region. The defenders of Clark Field are being steadily ground down.
