I enjoy seeing a little humour in the AAR - I would have got your "Mine of Death" allusion right away as I tend to do the same thing - marry a common phrase to a current situation to put a little twist on it. Quite appropos!

Tsingtao is upgraded to level 5 Port. Makes sense, seeings as Shanghai is about closed off for good and thus, the only routes left to move troops from China to Japan is by air, or by ship in a small corridor a few hexes in the far north part of the Yellow Sea that my air search barely covers.

Planning a second route no doubt.

I use my bombers here and not elsewhere (airfield or port attacks) for a few reasons. 1 I get combat experience relatively easy. 2 The more IJ troops my air kills, the less US troops get killed/disabled assaulting those IJ troops. Having more of the islands off Kyushu that can build to level 6-7 eases pressure of any 1 base being shut down

If that batallion on Onnekotan Jima is the only unit, no need to worry about fierce resistance. A Bn is only about 1/3 of a Regiment - about 42 AV. Wouldn't take much pounding to reduce that to near zero.

I forget which AAR it was [may have been Greyjoy's] but he didn't take all the Kuriles and well after he had secured all of Hokkaido, there was suddenly a very successful seaplane or patrol plane attack on his convoys from the only remaining dot hex in the Kuriles. If you do end up running your major effort from the east with convoys running close by the Kuriles, you need to take all of them.

hi AP,

i hope you have fun w/ Downfall. i played it vs. the AI, it was great to have all those late-war toys.

Naval: the glut of LSTs and gunfire-support LCs are great, but ReplTFs are even better. AOs, AEs & CVEs (w/ VR sqns) can keep your CV TFs at sea indefinitly. i hope you're aware that AEs can replenish at sea. you'll have a lot of carrier aircraft upgrade opportunities, it's important to match up the planes in a CVE-VR TF w/ the types needed by the CV TFs.

Air: the Marianas bases still need a bit of construction work, some re-distribution of CBs & AirHQs will be needed. there's an atoll (Eniwetok?) that needs some const, & some air support, to improve its ability to enable air-transfer of LR bombers from Pearl to points west. cosset your B29 (& high-alt LR recon) sqns, the production rate is kinda low. don't neglect your training program! you can stabilize your B29 fleet - use a 30-40% rest rate and they can run continuous ops, w/ only a few sqns stood down for rest/training as their morale dips into the 80s.

JMalter: Excellent points regarding replenishment. I've been mostly retiring to restock sorties and such, and haven't really used replenishment fleets to keep an entire navy on station. I'm still stuck in the "no toys" mode of carefully husbanding those ships for very limited use.

Eniwetok is building up nicely as a stop-over base, and the Mariana's are about full. Honestly, what I figured was more important is getting my forward bases built early... so lots of those islands I just took have a large number of engineers at them.

With my B29 flights... I tend to fall for the "hey, it's nice out, all those other groups are flying today, so YOU'RE flying today too." path of destruction. I've been either flying them all, or none of them. I do this instead of continuous ops because I don't want my LRFighter squadrons sweeping and escorting every day. If I do con't ops with B29's, I'll have to do that with the P51's and P47's at Iwo. For this month, and probably half of next month, I'll continue to rest or fly en-masse. Given that, however, I will set the Rest % of each B29's squadron between 0-30% based on a couple factors: Plane Damage (I'll check plane damage, get a quick feel for how well the aircraft are holding up, and if it feels like a lot are damaged, I'll go on 30% rest. If only a couple planes have more than 30% damage, I'll do a 0% rest) and overall pilot feel (if fatigue is above 10/15 and morale below 85/85, I'll put it on about 20-30% rest). Never more than 30% rest either way, though.

I haven't done any training at all, except combat training.

Heya BB, I'm not too worried about that strike Rader did against Greyjoy happen to me, for a couple of reasons. #1 I found that attack to be extremely gamey. After all, Greyjoy had the Kuriles and Hokkaido and Radar flew a hundred/2hundred? aircraft all over that to his single base.... there is no possible way that 200 IJ planes can fly over that (all that radar, all those aircraft bases, all those ships, all those troops, in a combat zone) without being spotted and eaten for lunch on the way there. But the game engine allows transfers like that as it doesn't do "in flight intercepts" and thus we have to deal with the possibility. I'd have an issue with it. #2 He doesn't have anything built up in the Kuriles. #3 There's nothing to be gained by defending the reaches of the Kuriles. hardly any VP's and anything he sends to these islands means less troops to defend Japan. #4 I already control the sea lanes in the Kuriles. The only way for him to re-base troops is via air, fast transport, or luck.

Given all that, though, I'd love if he makes a huge defensive push in the Kuriles. I can use 6 CV's, a couple BB's, a few CVE's, some crap transports, a few dozen fleets of all those ships that are chillin in port cuz I don't have a current use for them, and really give the impression of "doing a greyjoy"

Thoughts: My plan at the beginning of the game was to kill 1/4th of Japan's HI by the end of the month. I would fly my B29's hard to do so. But I underestimated the power of the '29, and I've destroyed, as a wild guess, 1/2 to 3/4ths of his HI by targeting a couple of cities where it's concentrated. I'm going to fly a couple more missions against Osaka and that should really put an end to Osaka as a HI center for a long long time. Once Osaka is gone, then the only remaining significant HI center is Tokyo (which currently has over 700 planes based there) and Tokyo is on the map for destruction. Eitehr way, I'm ahead of where I thought I was with the HI campaign. I do believe that in the next 2 weeks, I'll have destroyed nearly all of his HI.

Recognizing that this may "ruin" the game long term, that we changed an HR a couple weeks into the game because fires were not really effective (or, I just don't know how to start and sustain them to be effective) and not knowing what his pools are like, I shot him an email saying that if the game is ruined for him at month 4, 6, whatever, I'd be open to having a mod open the scenario and magically dumping some HI into the pool. He said no worries, that's what it should be like for Japan. We'll see.

I think that the first two weeks of the big invasion will determine the rest of the war. That's when both Cruft and I will truly get a feel for the opponents LCU power.

I can't wait to get P80's... because I've never used P80's in a war game of any kind except Flight Leader (I used them maybe a few times before I said "these suck, gimme F16's cuz that's fun!")

Just wanted a quick comment on this...

Due to the chronology in which orders are given to each side (IJ first, US second), I find the ability of the Allied player to "see" where the Japanese player transferred planes to a new base and give an order to launch an attack on that base to be gamey in most situations. To me, that gamey situation is when the Allied player really doesn't have the forces in place to 'see' those transfers. So, if for example, Cruft transfers some aircraft between two bases in Korea that I have no search over, no planes have the range for it, no ships with radar are in the area, no troops on the ground... for me to launch a strike against that base where the plane symbol magically appeared on the map would be gamey.

If Cruft were to transfer aircraft from the Tokyo to Truk... requiring an overflight of Iwo, Saipan, Guam, and numerous allied fleets in the area, I don't find it gamey to launch a "same day" attack on Truk.... because I honestly feel that those aircraft would have been spotted and intercepted on the way, or at least, the allies would know there's new planes on Truk. That I can't launch an in-flight intercept, I tend to think it's "ok" to bomb it with bombers as a work-around.

Of course, I didn't bomb Truk this turn, when he flew in a bunch of bombers, because I didn't notice the magic plane symbol over Truk this turn. So I chalk this up to the IJ plane transfer happening without knowledge "damn sneaky Jappo's flying bombers at wave-top level at night for 1000 miles to a bypassed base". This was a crafty move crufty, if albiet an obvious one when looking at the strat map at the games beginning. Give him Kudo's for getting his bombers over to Truk 'unspotted' and launching a successful attack on B29's at an uncapped airbase.

hi AP,

Air: i see that your surge/rest scheme will work better than cont ops, so's to allow the F's to have a breather. there's a group of early-model B29s that i used for cont Truk air-base bombing. do you have any HRs on night bombing? IJ has quite a few NFs, but they don't bother the Superforts at all. a 256-plane night airbase raid at 7k' will put a big smokin' hole in the middle of those 700 planes at Tokyo.

Naval: i used ReplTFs to the max, w/ many of the CV & CVE-ASW TFs running at cruise speed, which reduces their minor-damage accrual. CV TFs can stay on station, or do a slow parade. the ReplTFs do the shuttle run back to base for refills. the VR sqns can be divided, & their sub-groups resized. you can xfer some to land-bases and/or change their plane types to match up better w/ the planes you need.

I think a tour de force of the Home Islands with my carriers, supported by many replenishment fleets, smashing airfields and ports along the way, might be a good fun idea to "pass the time" before the big invasion. It'll keep Cruft on his toes and not chilling in situ waiting for it.

It also might serve to allow me an extra day or two to move the invasion fleet closer to Japan for if all his energy is directed at the CV fleets, he might "not see" the amphib forces - kinda like I did at Truk when the magical "Aircraft Here" symbol showed up.

Plus, if I do it right, I can probably knock down a bunch of attack aircraft (Kami's and torp planes) that would be used against my invasion.

If I do it wrong, I'll lose half my CV fleet given the game engine limitations when large numbers of a/c are involved.

So endeth the Jap garrison on Yakushima. All in all today was a good day for the Allies. My navy performed superbly, Osaka got flattened, Nagasaki lost it’s airforce. This is what happens with a 100% B29 assault. Pure Mayhem.

Your assumption of great die rolls on this action is not the reason - E W-27 was in the previous night surface action and had "heavy fires, heavy damage". Finishing off a cripple with no partners doesn't require much luck.

I split my BB’s (with 4 DD escorts) as they needed to rearm. I kept these guys around for another bombardment because I want the enemy dead with no loss to my men. The more men I kill by expending supply, vs men, the better for me.

I wanted to post this screenie of the previous days Japanese Ship Lost Register

My destroyers are downright devastating. I'm going to start rolling some DD's up to my base in the Kuriles, and see if I can start moving them into the Sea of Japan. This will force Cruft to only move ships through the Mine of Death, and be very beneficial to me.

This is one reason I'm moving "in apparent force" into the Kuriles... I'll have a base much closer than Attu Island, with which to run "Korea to Japan via Sea of Japan" interdiction operations.

A few Fast Raider fleets should be able to wreak havoc. I have plenty of DD's available, my loss rate on these ships has been very low compared to my starting forces, there will come a time when all the small US ships are basically combat worthless due to "no Jap forces they can fight". I have many of the necessary small-tf support ships moving to the Kuriles. They've been positioning themselves for the "Adak to Kurile" run since the opening of hostilities (well, since Japan took two nukes and said "neener neener neener, we're still here"). I have 6 CV, 4 CVL, and 6 CVE's that can maintain round the clock, 24/7/365, air cover.

But... but... as is the tagline by my latest, greatest, television obsession states, "Winter is Coming". [&o]

Not sure if you noticed but Bowfin shows up 3 times in the last combat report:
First the skipper decided not to waste torps on a small xAKL with her last two torps, then this:

Submarine attack near Shimonoseki at 104,56

Japanese Ships
xAK Josho Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS Bowfin

SS Bowfin is sighted by xAK Josho Maru
SS Bowfin launches 2 torpedoes at xAK Josho Maru

And on the third occasion eludes two SCs since she is now out of torps. Good boat! Good skipper!

Sounds like you are enjoying Game of Thrones as much as I am. My son and other posters on this forum say the Song of Ice and Fire books are excellent but I haven't the patience to read them, so the series on HBO brings them to life with excellent acting, superb sets and costumes, and great dialogue. CGI is used appropriately but not overused.

Best part is that no characters are safe - you never know who's next on the grim reaper's list. Kinda like not knowing what surprises your WITP-AE enemy has in store for you. Great drama!

Gonna be outta town on vacation until next Saturday. This will give me a chance to plan the big invasion. Ships are about into position. I figure that in about 10 days game time, the slow, far away ships will have to depart port, enroute to lands beyond.
