What do you know about his air search capability between wake and Marcus Island? If he wants the south pacific than there will be some Convoys between Japan and Truk. An Idea is to send a carrier task force once in that region. From Pearl Harbour sailing north west and than change direction to Saipan. You will need an replenish tf. It is very risky.

You should do this only if
a.) his KB is too far away
b.) his air search in this "gap" is weak

Do not stay there..simply in and immediately out. Do not expect to hit something..

but maybe stops being to be aggresive because he send units to protact this gap.
And Maybe you find something..

In way very risky and a little bit suizidal

You can do the same sort of thing with surface raiders. A single CL or CA with floatplanes aboard set to patrol on a likely convoy route... admittedly much less chance of finding anything but much less to lose as well. Old rubbish like Omaha cruisers have a pretty limited set of uses.

Mind you. I think castor knows my love of surface combat so I am biased, I have DDs avidly raiding even in 1944 with airpower everywhere. When it comes to ships and raids, I am the Field Marshal Haig of WITP. He loved raids as well, albeit trench raids...

I'm not really a fan of sending anything too far out into enemy controlled territory, not much to gain IMO and I don't like losing ships. And Betties can be flown in in one turn from nearly anywhere. Sending my carriers is something I am not willing to do as I have other plans with them and even if I would do nothing with them, this still means the enemy has to keep KB with his bigger invasions as he did near Fiji when KB was actually occupied for two weeks guarding the convoys going in and out. If he spots my carriers passing Wake, he can send KB to raid my lines, which is worse than raiding his.

I've been playing BabesLite, and I'm pretty sure it's based off Scen 1. 3k AV in Malaya is most everything if you reinforce it (HK, etc) and go light on Luzon. I bet the road to Burma is quiet.

The main thing I wanted to comment on is the Fiji invasion -

yeah, he really seems to be serious about the South Pacific, guess an IJN Fleet HQ got lots of naval support so he thinks about replenishing his ships down there. Oh I am sure he will finish the historical perimeter and he will do so far earlier than real life. [:D] Not wanting to take away too much from what have happened in the game already when the AAR is a month behind but basically I stick to my tactic of building strongholds in terrain that favour my defenders but this also means I give up all the ground literally everywhere so taking the SRA and Burma would be doable with a couple of SNLF. But then it's kind of Asterix and Obelix, the whole country is conquered but there is still a small village that keeps fighting, which are my strongholds. I've got one on Java, I've got Singapore, Malabatay (Mindanao) and I've got Clark Field. He can't ignore all of them and if he does, he still has to keep prison guards there, which would accumulate and sure exceed 2000 av to keep me honest.

The only exception to my tactic is Burma, which I don't care much. Burma is only needed for a couple of weeks to bring lots of supply to Rangoon that flows to China and so far the enemy didn't intervene, he didn't even spot my convoys going to Rangoon. Burma will be important again in late 42/early 43 when you can think about a come back there when China will probably be in need of supplies again in mid/late 43.

I always try to trade land for units. I rather get out without a fight instead of fighting a couple of days and have my units destroyed. Of course, only until a certain line.

we have spotted the enemy going towards Koepang and due to the fact that we need a little more time in this area I thought about trying to interrupt enemy operations a little... we have Dutch, British and Australian forces in the area and formed up a Dutch and a Brit/Aussie cruiser SAG to go in one after another, with the Dutch showing up first to fight it out with the expected enemy cruisers (which turned out to be two BB) and then the Brit/Aussie SAG to trash the transports... that was the plan and the plan saw my Dutch cruisers as victims that had to be sacrificied while making the sacrifice worth it as I expected to see the enemy SAG that covers the invasion to either run out of ammo or would move out of the hex as happens most often...

the plan works as far as the Dutch show up first and unexpectedly enough they meet Kongo and Haruna and SURVIVE!!! [X(] That engagement pretty much equates the engagement between Louisville and the two Kamikaze DD as both Kongo and Haruna just fail, completely... guess I hit the 1:50 chance to see the Dutch surviving that engagement...

and when the engagement was over, we see the enemy SAG moving out of the hex, retreating North! [X(] Hey, this works even better than planned because at this stage the Dutch were expected to be gone already... [:D]

only three DD as escorts for two BB seems a bit light to mee btw...

The day isn't over yet of course and I was absolutely excited when I saw my two cruiser TF being in Koepang's hex with the enemy SAG retreating out of it, this could be the next massacre of an IJN amphib TF, even though it was able to unload already - which was expected anyway as I wanted to go in during the day and not showing up at night...

the Dutch didn't move out of the hex after engaging Haruna and Kongo so also the next engagement saw them attacking, this time a CVE with a lonely DD as escort? Wow, this clearly shows how overstretched bluebook is with his invasions happening all over the world at the same time, as he only got 3 DD for 2 BB and 1 DD for a CVE to operate in this area...

now what two Kongo class BB and three DD weren't able to do, Suzukaze could as she single handedly took out Piet Hein while our ships tried to hit the enemy escort carrier... during the replay Suzukaze alone fired more rounds on our SAG than we did in return but the Dutch light cruisers managed to put several shells into Taiyo that finally managed to get away together with Suzukaze which was a bit depressing as I hoped to sink it right away with the involved forces on both sides... nevertheless, this is all going very well (far better than expected - I didn't expect the CVE here anyway) and we still have the Brits/Aussies...

here you can see that my cruisers also sit at Koepang... just like the Japanese still sit there... this TF had more than enough op points and there is just no reason why nothing happened other than yet another flaw... you can choose, either the flawed naval movement gets you or some other flaw if naval movement works as it should... grrrr... it really seems like it is just not worth the risk to use your ships...

Pago Pago invasion with KB sitting next to the invasion convoy and a picket PB further East as usual... am going to heavily rely on picket TFs now too...

Enterprise suffers severe damage from the torpedo attack and will retire to Darwin, the other SAGs are all set to full speed, hopefully they can make it out as I expect bluebook to order all his available ships to intercept my now fleeing cruisers... looking at Koepang, you can see the enemy invasion convoy sitting in the hex with our cruisers... dumb...

North of Koepang are the two BB, the cripples and the damaged CVE...

the reason for me intervening here can also be seen, it's that convoy North of Wyndham that is heading to Darwin and I feared it being spotted and attacked next turn or so if I don't act myselve...

in the end, we get away absolutely ok as the Dutch survived and we damaged a CVE but the cruisers' mission wasn't accomplished as the game just failed to have my Brit/Aussie cruisers engage the enemy invasion convoy sitting at Koepang happily unloading during the day...

also interesting to see in this picture, while no ammo was spent from the main armament due to the not happening engagement, Enterprise spent nearly halve of her AA ammo against two small Betty raids, same as did the whole TF... this again makes me wonder how well ammo on ships is modelled... subs run out of gun ammo after lightly damaging a single small freighter, cruisers run out of main gun ammo after firing some rounds at enemy DD and ships running out of AA ammo in no time isn't something we haven't known earlier either...

ok, it's 5th Jan 42 and Timor is lost too... what now? Mind you, Timor is not on my list of important targets to defend... [:)] still, a nice fast grab once more... if my cruisers would have attacked the amphib convoy it would have had it's price...

Can't agree with that - Taiyo/Unyo/Chuyo are converted liners and pretty sturdy - durability 53 against f.e 33 for the Casablancas. Not much aircraft capacity for being as big as they are, but they're pretty well put together.

(I know this first hand, having inserted three torpedoes into Taiyo at once, which it survived...)

yeah, that's correct. But according to what was planned, the Dutch were supposed to be trashed - by enemy heavy cruisers [:D] - and then the Brits and Aussies should have wiped the floor with the invasion convoy, which didn't happen because the game decided to forget about the naval engagement to pop up. As it stands now, the trip didn't do us much good, except having damaged a CVE. We'll see.

it seems to have been a very succesful turn for us, not only were the losses at Singapore a shock for the enemy, we also received intel about high Zero losses on the ground, which made me think that the CVE that was shot up at Timor sunk and bluebook admitted the escort carrier made Kendari but sunk... woooot? [X(] Not only is this my first carrier that was sunk purely due to damage done by a SAG, it was sunk by DUTCH ships!!!! means the Timor operation now has actually cost him something... the CVE does not show up in my sunk list though... the loss of one of the very limited Zero daitais at this stage must hurt too...
