They must have touched it up quite a bit then, because wasn't "Tora! Tora! Tora!" in B&W? I know Midway was in color.

Also, Midway was based off of a novelization of history. I actually had the book first, before watching the film, and it's probably still floating around somewhere... It may have been my first exposure to glossy inserts of WW2 photos in WW2 books. The photos were pretty sweet.

Tora, Tora, Tora was a color film done in 1970. B & W was passé for most motion picture films (outside of art houses) by then.

Warspite1

The film tells the story of the assassination of Reinhardt Heydrich in May 1942. It was made in the mid 70s and stars Timothy Bottoms and Anthony Andrews as the two main Czech agents that are flown in to Prague to kill "The Butcher of Prague". Martin Shaw plays a third Czech agent who ultimately betrays his comrades in order to save his family.

The film keeps largely to fact, although the final scene takes a few liberties with what actually occurred, but is worth it for the tear jerker of an ending.

Not sure if they actually filmed in Prague, but it looks like it.

At the end of the film they tell what happened to each of the individuals - including those that helped house the agents.[:(]

The soundtrack is, on the face of it, a strange choice - but works brilliantly. The music is synthesiser based ( pre-Kraftwerk!). It shouldn't work in a WWII film - but trust me it really does!

Sadly no copies of the soundtrack exist and the composer says it's uneconomic to re-create - which is a real shame......

If you get the chance, have a look.

For years I have said the three best war movies are Das Boot, the siege of firebase gloria, and Sam Peckinpah's 'Cross Of Iron'


Mister Roberts (1955 film) should get an mention as the most realistic war film (judging by my time at sea) lots of really boring stuff, petty ship politics and drunken debauchery during shore leave.

I seem to be the only fan of 'Apocalypse Now' so far.....I'm a bit suprised[X(]

It doesn't quite fit the "war flick" genre. That might be why.

If you liked Apocalypse now, you need to read the short story that inspired it: Heart of Darkness, by Conrad. As for diaries, I believe you've read Junger"s war diary (Storm of Steel in english), this is one of the best. In the opposite trench, you'll have Genevoix and Drieu la Rochelle.

Well, Apocalypse Now's premise is a mission set in the Vietnam War ( albeit a covert mission ), into unknown territory, with lots of action and mishaps along the way. So I'd have to disagree with you on that point, it really is a war/antiwar film, depending on which side of the fence you are on.

Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness' ( on which AN is based ), is a truly brilliant book, and I would recommend it to anyone.

I agree, it is superb.

But for some weird reason, everytime I think of that scene I immediately have to think of Hot Shots 2 where Charlie and Martin Sheen´s PT boats meet in the middle of nowhere.
Hilarious scene, the first time I have seen it I nearly choked (having seen Apocalypse Now a few weeks before even more...).

I don't know anything about that.

I think what he meant to refer to was the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which included Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and Return of the King. Three different movies. All well done, but some folks have their preferences amongst the films in the trilogy.

For seige warfare, it's hard to beat Grond in Return of the King. The written prose describing Grond's appearance on the battlefield is inspires awe. [&o]

"Great engines crawled across the field; and in the midst was a huge ram, great as a forest-tree a hundred feet in length, swinging on mighty chains. Long had it been forging in the dark smithies of Mordor, and its hideous head, founded of black steel, was shaped in the likeness of a ravening wolf; on it spells of ruin lay. Grond they named it, in memory of the Hammer of the Underworld of old. Great beasts drew it, orcs surrounded it, and behind walked mountain-trolls to wield it."

As films like Casablanca & Conspiracy got included here (2 superb movies) shouldn't also Judgement at Nuremberg get mentioned? The acting in this one is simply astonishing.
