Does it install on start up or when the ap starts? Oh! and best of luck with the tiles.

ASKING FROM IGNORANCE -

I see Intel Monkey and Tracker referred to.

Are they complimentary? Or do they overlap? Or completely different.

I've made some halfhearted efforts to get Tracker, but having issues getting Java 6 to stick.

I've been even more halfhearted getting Intel Monkey.

SO which should I put the effort into getting.

Intel monkey is for the AFB's intel.

Tracker is a must have for JFB's to run the economy. AFB's use it some, but it isn't critical.

Intel Monkey also has searches on ships and LCU in the combat reports. Useful for IJ player too.

Complimentary, as the overlap is trivial. I use Tracker every turn. I wrote Intel Monkey and obviously I use it too, but I don't need it every turn.

Python installs one time. When the application starts, it uses (runs in) a Python interpreter, the start up of which is part of the application starting up.

It's the same situation as Tracker, just that Tracker uses a Java interpreter (instead of a Python interpreter).

Search for my posts in the Tracker forum. I have shown the steps on how to get the old Java 6 installed correctly even while the latest Java 7 is on the system. IIRC I even included links on where to get old Java 6 on Oracles web site.

From earlier in the thread it appears that IntelMonkey looks in a specific location for them.  My IntelMonkey installation is C:\Matrix Games\WitP AE RA\IntelMonkey so how do I force it to look in C:\Matrix Games\WitP AE RA\SAVE\archive for the archives?

Next up is how does Intel Monkey find your archive sub folder? By default, if you do not edit the Intel monkey program file (the .py file), Intel Monkey is set up to presume it is in a certain sub folder. You have a folder for your main AE install

- Main AE install folder (exact name does not matter)
-- tools
--- Intel Monkey (exact name of this folder does not matter, but this is where Intel Monkey expects to be installed.)

From that spot, Intel Monkey backs upwards two levels, then goes downwards through the SAVE folder to find the archive folder.

- Main AE install folder (exact name does not matter)
-- SAVE
--- archive

So the easiest thing to do, is just copy (or move) that whole folder that you've created in your download section. Move it so that it is inside the 'tools' folder.

Thanks, it worked but I find it unusual that it's the location of program that matters and not were the files are that the program accesses, but never mind it works and that's all that matters.

It actually is where the files are that matters, and there is a variable inside the program to specify that. But - people make all manner of different decisions about where they want to put things that I cannot predict. Plus, many people use multiple installations of AE, and those installations have names that I also cannot predict.

In spite of that, I wanted to have a default configuration that would work for most people right out of the box. I figured that the 'tools' folder is the most likely place where Intel Monkey would get installed (it's created by Matrix as part of the installation, for example). So by default I presume that IM is installed under that 'tools' folder, then I navigate from there as EHansen cut and pasted.

You can put IM anyplace you want to as long as you edit the file and tell it where to find your data. If you don't want to bother with that, then you can just put it in the 'default place' as described in the doc and from there it already knows where to find the data.

I happy, it works just not the way I would normally access a file but your explanation as to why makes sense. Thanks

I know, but that is a secondary or tertiary thing for me given FOW.

When I play AFB, I have to have Intel Monkey to make use of the allied intel. Tracker, not really.

When I plan JFB, I have to have Tracker to run the IJ economy. Intel Monkey, not as much.

And of course I use Combat Reporter for both sides.

Your game switches (in the shortcut that you use to start the game) must include -archive. That switch makes the game save a copy of each turn's report files to the archive folder underneath the save folder.

In other words, if you are not saving the reports in that fashion every turn, then Intel Monkey has nothing to work with.

Inside the file, is a place where you can specify the folder you want. That allows people who are technically savvy to put it anywhere they want. But most people want no part of editing a file like that, so the built-in default (unless you edit it to change it) is that it assumes it is installed in a certain folder, and navigates from there. Separate mod folders are just fine, I use them all the time. This is in the documentation and that explanation might be worded more clearly because I had time to think it out and revise it, but here it is off the top of my head.

Each 'install' of AE has a main folder. In the example that you gave, this:
C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition DBB-C Iron

is the main folder. You should see underneath that one a folder called "tools". That is the place where most people install Tracker, BTW. The tools folder is where Intel Monkey, by default, assumes that it has been installed (in its own sub-folder). To find the data files, it goes up two levels (one level = tools, second level = the installation's main level), then goes down into save\archive.

The easiest thing to do is just move the Intel Monkey folder to the 'tools' folder. Or, you can edit the Intel Monkey file (the .py file) to tell it specifically where to find the files.

I have several installs so that I can have a separate one for each PBM, or also run an AI game or otherwise mess around. In each installation's tools folder it has its own copy of Tracker and of Intel Monkey.

Let me know if this clears it up.

That did the trick, witpqs. Thanks for the help.

I never thought of using the Tools folder, and to keep things neat, moved Tracker and Reporter there.

I never tried Staff. Curious to see how that would work, but I guess too late now.

I've got Tracker working fine, but when I try to "get bases" a window briefly flashes on screen then disappears
