That's correct.
Tykkimies, Jääkäri, Pioneeri or whatever:rolleyes: = Private
"Alikersantti" or "Kersantti" = Sergeant
"Vänrikki" = 2nd Lieutenant
And welcome to the forum Kaiutin!

Well, I guess I'm going to be the first one to say that I haven't done any military service and I won't do any. However, that doesn't stop me from finding the game fascinating and great fun!

Not surprisingly, I have found the learning curve to be very steep as I have no basic knowledge of anything military. Just... gotta... try... harder...

I have to correct those ranks a bit...
Sotamies = Private
Korpraali = Private 1st. class / Lance Corporal
Alikersantti = Corporal
Kersantti = Sergeant
I served in Finnish Rapid Deployment Force, a PfP (Partnership for Peace) organization of the Finnish Army, and we used NATO-standards in everything so I should know.

I did my military service in the german Bundeswehr as gunner on an M-109 self propelled howitzer. It was back in 1989 and the duration for the service was 15 months. For those interested I was in the 3./PzArtBtl 285 in Münsingen, Germany.
That's my Avatar: it shows me (yes, I'm there

) in front of the M-109.

My condolences... how close did you miss the reduction of the military enlave..., err, compulsory service to 12 months? (Happened in 1991 IIRC)

Well I entered service in January 1989 and IIRC the recruits which entered January 1990 had only to do 12 months.
But honestly I don't think it was too bad. I learned a lot about social behavior and comradship.

Well, I made my experiences in 1986/87 and during one reserve exercise in 1989.
If the battery commander of a M109-battery doesn't know that there is 155mm ammo that can be laser-guided (of corse not in the german inventory), if a battalion commander isn't able to tell that approx. 50% (Numbers of the mid-80s) of the Bundeswehr consists of conscripts (that question was asked by a civilian on an open day), then the rememberances aren't too well.
I remember one 1st Lt. telling me that he belived that the Federal republic of Germany is a country woth to be defended when he entered the Bundeswehr.
He would still have this cconviction, however after several years in the Bundeswehr he doubted that the Bundeswehr is the kind of organization that could be used for this task.
