Ghost Unit?

I received some signals intelligence on a Japanese unit that I can't seem to find anywhere. It's the Japanese 33rd Infantry Regiment. Does this unit exist and I am just not doing a good job of finding it or is my Sigint playing tricks on me? As a reminder, Mike and I are playing DBB Scenario 28.

Thanks guys.

Miura and Kimura detachment are forming 33rd regiment and 33rd is part of 16th div

A bit late now, but that lack of fighter success at Manila could be because of fatigue in the unit after transfer. Flying in a cramped fighter for hours seems to really fatigue pilots.

I checked and fatigue was in the mid to high teens because I made sure to rest them for a turn. At the end of the day not everything will go my way, I just have to set up enough good opportunities and on average I will rack in the results. It's the nature of the game, not unlike real life too tbh. [:)]

In a different AAR, I posted this on 27 April 2020.

In very general terms the following applies. Bear in mind, not all the applicable factors are mentioned.

1. Pilot skill ratings are used exclusively in combat situations.

2. Non combat situations factor pilot experience level.

3. Combat situations which are not directly addressed by the aptly named skill, use as one of the relevant factors, the experience level. Experience feeds into and modifies pilot Morale, Fatigue, Disruption levels in combat.

4. In a fighter on fighter confrontation, the jockeying for position is influenced by the relevant skill rating; A2A to engage, DEF to evade.

5. In a fighter on fighter confrontation, after the jockeying for position is determined, an energy state check is made. This check is partly influenced by the respective pilot experience level. It determines the actual combat speed at which combat occurs.

6. The combat speed may result in adjusted MRV ratings of the airframes for that specific combat.

In classical WITP only experience mattered. This is not the case in AE which has "sub contracted" many of the old classical WITP experience checks to the relevant skill ratings.

The player does not know what were the modified values used in the combat. What the player sees are the "base" unmodified values.

Thanks Alfred. I remember reading that post of yours but good to read it again as a reminder.

Thanks mate! Not finding the unit was annoying me so I am pleased to have the answer.

Submarines

On patrol near Leyte Gulf, S-38 spots and launches two torpedoes at Japanese destroyer Ayanami. One connects and the destroyer is heavily damaged.

Philippines

More sustained bombing of both Clark and Manila airbases.

Malaya

Oscars sweep over Singapore but no resistance is encountered. A few Japanese bombers are lost to flak in subsequent raids during the day.

South Pacific

My naval search picked up the KB approaching New Caledonia the last turn. I decided to pull back my destroyer escorts but allow my two transports to finish unloading some troops I was delivering to Noumea. By the time the KB strikes, the vast bulk of the passengers and cargo will be ashore and I judged that it would be worth the sacrifice of the two medium sized xAPs.

Sure enough, the two vessels mostly unloaded their holds by the time the KB planes came over during the air phase. To my shock however, the KB damaged but failed to sink either vessel! Kate launched torpedoes repeatedly malfunctioned, and bad weather prevented a further afternoon strike. This event changes nothing, both these ships will die and as I said they had mostly unloaded, but it was certainly entertaining to watch.

Burma

I got greedy with my bombing attempts to slow down the Japanese forces marching towards Moulmein. This turn I paid the price when 11 Hudsons finally ran into a strong CAP of Zeros and were annihilated to the last plane. Sheesh.

Submarines

SS KXII surfaced and engaged a Japanese xAKL near Cam Rahn Bay with its deck gun. I almost thought the xAKL was going to come out ahead until the Dutch sub had enough and put a torpedo into the small Japanese ship.

Philippines

I tried the Luzon fighter trick again this turn and this time it worked like a charm. 18 Nell bombers are shot down as a result and a new American ace is born.

South Pacific

As expected, Mike’s KB made sure that the damaged xAPs off Noumea did not survive another turn.

Hey guys, I am increasingly worried about Mike.

We had taken a break from the game for a while as he was increasingly busy with work but we continued to exchange friendly banter throughout that period. Unfortunately, he then fell ill with the dreaded Covid virus and we remained in touch for a week or so after that in which he complained about the symptoms but suddenly thereafter it's been radio silence. I've sent him a couple of messages but I haven't heard back from him for about ten days now. Obviously the game is the lowest priority in these situations and I am praying he is all right.

I also hope that all is better for your opponent.
