Personally, for the most part it was because it wasnt on steam. Additioanlly for a long while I didnt fully understand what the game really was which pushed me away, until a youtuber, NinjaDojoGaming?, played it and honestly that had a large impression on me, as I do plan on buying it on steam this week.
Additionally, I was talking with a friend about this and I thought his response was interesting.
"slightly burnt-out regarding East-Front centric games

, though I want to try WEGO North Africa"

bought it last week. realized that I should have bought much earlier. I will buy overlord on the release day probably.
note: there is a thread on steam community forum of WEGO Stalingrad. It is titled as "Spent a few hours with this one". There the user mentioned two possible reasons which might be an obstacle for this game to gain more attention. They seem plausible to me. the devs might want to check that thread. obviously I am not a professional on marketing, but might worth to take a note.

I am on the edge now. I have tons of wargames (though in the end I keep playing just few of them), and each one requires considerable time commitment to learn them. So I am trying (without much success) to buy only those that I will most probably keep playing. For the context, ATM my top fav are Shadow Empire, WDS Panzer Campaigns & Squad Battles, Close Combat series.
I did research into WEGO Stalingrad, because I like the concept, but I still can't understand the depth of it - from videos it looks like comparable to Warplan or Hex of Steel (though these are not WEGO).
I keep reading that the tactical battles in Stalingrad are "brutal", that would be a sell for me, but cannot find any other evidence of that. But then there are WDS Squad Battles and they are really great, albeit using different system (IGOYOUGO). So it's like "should I really dedicated my time and money to find out if I will keep playing it?"
Oh choices choices....
