I see that turn after turn players counterattack to retake regions, I wonder, Does the game favour offensive over defebsive or ere players being simply very aggresive?

or are players being simply very aggresive?
/raises hand
it's very hard to fight the tempatation to attack, attack, attack. i often wonder if i would take a turn to just redeploy my troops forward, stockpile some supply, and then unleash an attack, would that work better? maybe i'll never know [:D]
it's hard to break gamers from the axiom "if i'm not moving forward, i'm losing". only one game has broke me of that, because it is rich in logistics and supply (Operational Combat Series from The Gamers [a board wargame]). this game may be another, but not today!

In a way it does. These are large regions and to simulate the constant fighting (and to make the game fun), there needs to be reasons to attack. Defenders do get a slight bonus, but this is not a game where you need 3 to 1 to win on an attack. However, as MB said, every attack uses 1 supply for each unit attacking. The defender is only going to use 1 supply for all units in the area (if they haven't alrady been supplied during their turn). So an attacker must continually burn supply points which is equates to production lost. If all you do is exchange with the defender, you are a net loser.

Sorry to break into your pleasurable chit chat but we Japanese warriors have some job to do - namely advance down the Transsiberian railway towards the European Russia.
Rendezvous at Urals?
BTW our supply situation is atrocious. But adherence to Bushido code will see us through.

Maybe this will be a game where playing China does have an importance...I would think the Chinese should be able to exploit this Japanese aggression into the SU with some attacks in the rear.........

i've been keeping my eye on the CH supply pool, about once a year he has enough supply to come out of hiding and whack the JA.

Research!
It seems from the last AAR this was very important. How goes the research so far and how does any of the players think it is impacting the game?

well, speaking as the German player, my early entry into the SU caused me to suspend my research on subs for awhile to focus on land and air units. i see the Evil democratic WA are working on super subs (thank god i'm not playing JA[:D]) so i will have to put some effort into my Light Fleet ASW soon.
I also noticed the SU was cruising along pretty good with research but the attack into the SU by JA and GE in Fa/Wi40 has forced him to suspend most research in order to build combat units.
i would say my tank evasion is outclassing his (SU) infantry pretty good, in all the counter attacks he did last turn i don't think i lost any tanks, they just retreated.

In the beginning research was going quite well. Between building units and supplies I just don't have time for research right now. The attack by Japan and the early German invasion threw off my entire production plan. I was expecting losses, just not that much that soon.
The only way I'm able to take territories is with mass attacks and those troops are thinning out. As far as I can tell militia units can't even damage your armor, they just gum-up your tank treads with their innards.
On to the report.
*****
Summer 1941
Two attacks were launched and while successful I took more losses than I would have liked to. Some damaged rail lines were repaired one level so I could move troops around. Other than that I'm attempting to defend what I have left but there's not enough troops to go around. There is still plenty of population to work with so, as long as there are factories and some resources I can still churn out the infantry. (However, the enemy can mow them down with armor about as fast as I can build them.)
We remain optimistic in the face of these minor setbacks. This small border skirmish will die down in a few months.

London - Summer 1941
Once again, Churchill demands action to assist our valiant Russian allies. With the increased efficiency of our naval forces, we once again hit Norway - liberating the country from Nazi occupation. We reinforced our positions there to withstand any attempts to push us out & should give the Germans some headaches for a while.
Our research continues, with several breakthroughs which should assist us in the future. Some supplies were ferried around, but still nothing major. We await the arrival of the Americans.

China - Summer 1941
Lt. General Stillwell was welcomed with open arms by our beloved leader today - traveling at the head of several important supply convoys, his arrival comes at the most opportune time.
The Japanese have continued their Siberian Expedition, leaving their coastal garrisons woefully undermanned. To take advantage of this opportunity, several fresh Chinese armies advanced, capturing vital territory from the enemy. Spoiling attacks further north at Peking damaged an infantry army & air unit - the arrival of fresh supplies will allow us to continue our mounting offensive to push the Japanese out of China proper entirely.

Well, Germany attacked ant took Moscow this turn. i retook Rostov andi did attrition attacks into Gorki and Stalingrad. I had no chance of taking the 2 areas, but i didn't suffer much (1 Inf Dmg'd) and i hurt him worse (5-6 units destroyed or damaged). The SU is down to 3 working Factories now.
i also sailed out 5 UBoats this turn and destroyed 4 WA Transports and damaged a 5th.

We re-took the West Siberian province this turn, and are certainly hoping Russians don't have much fight in them anymore.
We also informed our German allies that we earmarked units for Washington, DC occupational duties, if, or when, the US attacks our peaceloving, cherry-tree hugging nation [:D]

Fall 1941
Attempted to isolate and destroy some Japanese units, the first attack was a success but the second failed. There isn't much else to report. Tried to keep the area secure but hampered by usual lack of units. Remaining factories are still chugging on. Minister of Production said to be "highly optimistic" about quarterly report.
(Frankly, I'm surprised I'm still alive. I keep swinging between outbursts of drunken megalomania and fits of hysterical sobbing.)

London, Fall 1941
Our worst fears have been realized. Mass wolfpacks roam the Atlantic & the Royal Navy is nearly helpless to resist. We had to be content to move some of our forces around - reroute our supply convoys & hope for the best. If the Americans do not join our cause soon - there may be nothing left for them to save.

Supplies are needed for us to continue the offensive. Intelligence shows the Japanese have sent their entire stockpile of supplies to the continent. We hope to take advantage of that fact next season.

well it's winter 42 and sadly the US Factories are all doubling their output this year.
Germany took decisive actions this turn, i retook Norway from the pesky BEF. There are 7 Subs out hunting the north atlantic this turn, there are also 7 less WA transports convoying supply this turn (4 sunk, 3 damaged).
I took Gorki and Stalingrad, and that leaves only 2 SU factories. i also took the Caucusus but i don't think he needed those 6 resources anyway.
here is the Strategic Map of the World:
