This time, the terrain is against me. I am going to have to fight my way uphill against other legions. The plan is to use the Scorpions and archers to weaken the enemy front line. Then send in the spearmen to create a gap and then use my legions to finish them off.

Great report on Alesia, well done. Have you updated to v1.1 yet for the upcoming battles? What AI difficulty setting is your campaign on? Just curious, thanks.
Regards,
- Erik

Just FYI, Marathon...
The patch will enforce the elite unit limit for your campaign from now on. (However, your army is so elite at this point that it won't matter much.) As for the AI being more deliberate, you will not see that since your saved game is using the older settings.
So, once you are done with your AAR, you might want to try and refight the whole thing on hard to compare if it really is much harder for you!

I immediately encounter enemy units on my flanks; Legio V cavalry, Legio III cavalry, Allied cavalry and archers. On my right, I sweep my cavalry around the enemy flank as they charge. In the center, the enemy has Legio III and Legio IV. Their archers kill 800 of my men while my own artillery kills 1700 of them.

The right flank holds their ground against ineffective frontal cavalry charges. The left flank presses back the weak defense. In the center their are large losses on both sides. I lose four stands and two of the Auxiliary spearmen are driven backwards. One of Scorpion commanders, Quintus Lucanius, is killed. These are minor setbacks as the center is weakening.

My soldiers, on the right flank, eliminate three enemy cavalry units which clears the way for the entire flank to advance. On the opposite flank, the enemy has been swept away and they turn to support the center. Pilums and arrows kill two enemy leaders and have weakened the opposing legions, but it is a tough, uphill battle. Have to play a rally card on Quintus Sabinus to bolster the center.

The flanks press upon the center and the closest objective. All the enemy units defending the first objective are either routed or drive back with heavy losses. My artillery has to move up find some targets.

I pull back two units of Legio XII. They have both lost two stands each from the fighting around the first objective. My flanks continue to drive towards the enemy center. Two enemy legion units are eliminated. There is one slippery cavalry, on the right, which I have not been able to corner.
Objective one has been taken.

Fresh enemy cavalry appears but they are too late to stop me from taking objective one. My middle units continue to grind forward while my flanks close inward. Caesar finally kills Titus Papeliuis and clears the right flank.

I sent my cavalry towards the second objective and leave my legionnaires to clean up. They uncover a second enemy defensive line, around the second objective, composed of Legio VI and Legio V. These green troops throw their pilums at long range. They kill about the same number of friendly troops as they do my men.

Once again, my cavalry gallops around the enemy flanks to disrupt their defense of objective two. My repositioned archers and Scorpions help whittle down the remnants of the enemies first line still clogging the middle. My flanking infantry pivot and heads toward object two.

Prepare for the final assault while I continue to clean up the middle. Three more enemy units are eliminated.

Legio attacks the the enemy left, Legio XI attacks the enemy right and my cavalry hits their rear. About half my legions still have pilums. The enemy does not wait for me and charges, but these inferior soldiers do little damage and three of them rout. The enemy Will to Fight falls below the breaking point so I play health cards on Julius Caesar, Quintus Sabinius and Gaius Voluseus.

As you can notice, I ended this battle with heavy losses and their where multiple reasons for this. I had to attack uphill, the enemy had plenty of missile weapons and I was facing six stand legions. I did make use of the Auxiliary spearmen to soak up a lot of those casualties.

My prestige goes to uprising. For a change, I chase Pompey to Greece and he attacks me at Pharsalus.

Once again, I am called upon to defend an objective then counter-attack against the main enemy force.
