Foolish on my part for not having fighter cover and maybe for having them so far forward. But really the puny torpedoes did not really do much damage. I would post it, but enemy spies are lurking out there[:D]
Was not totally without consequence but definitely not what would have happened in WITP.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:
In the aftermath of yesterdays battle there have been several calls for the removal of Admiral Beardall. He had ordered the US fleet to Midway without fighter cover. Fortunately for the US fleet the battleships were not significantly damaged, but it could have been a disaster.
In other news the French Government has announced that Noumea will not be the home of the Southwet Pac HQ. The French have had a limited role in the war with Japan and have stated that their bases in Southpac are not available for US ground forces. Nor will their bases in Indo-China be available for US ground forces and the recapture of the Philippines.
This comes as a blow to the War Department. There was a plan floating around to send a US division through a southerly route around Australia to take an advanced base for later operations. This plan however, would require the use of French bases in Indo-China to stage the supply operation. This now appears to be unfeasible. There are calls for the withdrawal of the remaining US ships from the South China Sea to rejoin the fleet. No decision has been made at this time.

Emergency repairs have been completed and all fires put out on the Battleships at Midway. The strike has sparked a hot debate on whether the fleet should attempt to defend Midway or withdraw to Pearl Harbor so that it can counter-strike.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:
Jap mining operations have been very successful damaging and sinking vessels. To date Jap mines have damaged 3 ships and helped sink a destroyer. Naval authorities are taking steps to permantly base a minesweeping squadron at Midway to keep the harbor clear. This activity also brings into question again whether the Battlefleet should attempt to protect Midway or allow the Japs to land on the island and make a counter-attack. A final decision has not been made.
U125 was damaged by air attack today near Midway.
Republic of China military authorities confirmed that they have decided to abandon Jehol and fall back on Peking to rest and refit. They were locked in an attritional battle with the Japanese that they were loosing. Republic forces have been successful enlisting the help from several local warlords to recapture the town of Tabur-Nur which is outside of Manchuria and in China proper. Apparently this move by Japanese forces has caused some concern amongst many of the warlords - so some sort of an attack is likely.

BATTLE AT KISKA!!!!
Desron 23 engaged a Jap force at Kiska Island last night and was soundly defeated. The destroyer squadron ran into a jap cruiser squadron. The heavily outnumbered destroyers were surpised and destroyed by Jap naval forces. All three US destroyers were sunk, while inflicting only minor damage on the enemy. The unit was detailed to do recon of Kiska Island and try to assess enemy strength there.
In Manchuria the Republic of China forces managed to withdraw from Jehol and safely arrived at their base at Peking. The town of Jehol fell to the Japanese, but most residents of the town had fled back across the border into China proper.

US Naval forces indicate that they had a good day on the ASW front. ASW task forces operating in Midway have heavily damaged a Jap sub which had made several failed torpedo attacks on the shipping in the port. Additionally Army bombers operating at Saigon damaged a Jap sub operating in the port.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:
The fallout from the Battle of Midway continues. The Navy department announced today that it authorized the construction of the USS Enterprise plus it has earmarked a further $4,000,000 in RD to develop longer-range torpedo bombers, better torpedoes, and counter-measures for ships in anchorage. There was some talk about cancelling the Enterprise, however, the effectiveness of US aircraft in the Philippines and the hits on US battleships at Midway prove that this is an up and coming technology.
Initial analysis of the 5 torpedo hits on 4 US battleships indicates that stronger warheads could have crippled the US battlefleet. Only the USS New York suffered light damage but is still battleworthy.

Dateline Hong Kong:
In a shocking display of barbarity an Imperial Japanese Navy Task Force destroyed a British resupply convoy returning from a trip to Hong Kong. All 4 cargo vessels were sunk. There is outrage in Parliment that the convoy was unescorted. Of the close to 200 sailers and passengers on the 4 ships only 9 survived - picked up by a passing Chinese fishing trawler. The survivors told how the Japanese warships after they sunk the cargo vessels moved in amongst the life boats machine gunning survivors.
The Royal Navy announced today that it would be strengthening its fleet at the naval bases in Ceylon and at Singapore. Also the monthly resupply convoys will now be escorted by a Royal Navy Battle Squadron. A Royal Navy spokesman stated that the convoy was unescorted because they wanted to avoid an incident. They never believed that any civilized nation would attack neutral shipping on a mission to Hong Kong. There has been no response from the Japanese government.
In other news over 100,000 Japanese troops have crossed the border from Manchuria and routed the forces of warlord General Xi Fiung. The Japanese Army is now only 60 miles from Peking. Republic military officials hope the further advances by the Japanese army will free up more Chinese forces to counter the threat.

The situation for the Republic of China forces on Hainan is looking grim. At least 2 Battle Squadrons and a Cruiser Squadron appear to be bombarding the island. The Chinese forces are giving it back, but their Krupp 15 pdr's are not strong enough to penentrate the armor of the Japanese Battleships. Their hits are likely causing little or no damage.
There is intense speculation that the Japanese are going to launch an invasion of Hainan. The island is strategically located and the Asiatic fleet has used its ports in the past to resupply and refuel. The Chinese garrison on the island consists of two understrenght divisions with poor training, equipment and morale.

Dateline Hong Kong:
A major Japanese invasion of Hainan is underway. Some 17,000 Japanese troops have been landed at Kiungahan. The Chinese defenders are heavily outnumbered and have put up still resistance. Our reporters indicate that a major Chinese counter-attack is underway to attempt to through the Japanese back into the sea.
The Chinese fleet was all but eliminated some weeks ago, so there is little hope for assistance from the mainland.
US Navy officials state that the loss of Hainan will be a strategic blow to the Asiatic fleet and greatly complicate operations in the South China Sea. Not only will it make local Chinese ports untenable it will also block off Haiphong Harbor.
The US navy also announced today that Admiral Carpender will be returning to the United States to assume duties with the Battlefleet. He made several very successful attacks with the Asiatic fleet, but with the loss of the Heavy Cruiser Huron, dominance of the Asiatic squadron has fallen to the French. A French commander will now lead the Asiatic fleet forces.
