I agree. That first several days of diaper meconium is very sticky and tenacious stuff. It will bond to just about everything.
Erm...this is the sort of bonding you're hoping for, right Dixie?

I believe that there is currently a plan here in the UK for 6 months, to be shared between the parent's however they want. One parent could have all 6 months off or they could both have three each for example. TBH, my current working pattern is quite good for time with wee 'un. Apart from the time I have to spend out east I work 4-5 days of 12 hours and get 4-5 days off.
Neat. I'm glad that there's some public support for paternal leave. Pretty important stuff that is underappreciated, IMO. I forgot where I read that the average American father takes less than a week of paternity leave (like 3 days)[8|]
With each of our three, I took maybe a day and half off [:)] Someone has to work to pay for all of the kid stuff! We did live in the city where both my wife and I were born. So there were plenty of grandmothers, other relatives and friends around. to help But tbh I would have gone stark raving mad had I taken off very much time from work. But then again in the professions one cannot be gone long, or clients tend to get testy and leave.

I know one guy who took a week off when his first two were born ; he went Duck hunting the first time, and Deer hunting the second. They are no longer married. But interestingly enough he has actually turned out to be a good father in most respects. Was too immature when he first got married I think.

I am fortunate to be employed in a large Midwest University. Fathers are given 2 weeks off paid and can take an additional 4 weeks with the application of vacation or unpaid parental leave. I took about a month off for both of my kids and relished the experience. By US standards, this is unmitigated generosity, practically unheard of outside of a University or, maybe, Federal government.
Sure, a bit stir crazy at the end, but you only get one chance to make a first impression, as it were. I was fortunate to 'start things off on the right foot', IMO. I wouldn't have had it any other way.
Let the clients crank a bit. If they're not supportive of the most important thing in my life, they can all go hang. Erm...maybe it's best that I'm not in public practice...[:D]

I do think it is a lot different in the professions, clients will not wait, and there is plenty of competition out there. Also I think most of my fellow CPAs/Attornerys tended to do what I did and wait for a while after both grandmoms left and thus took time off later. I always waited for a while, then would take a half day off here, a long weekend there so my wife could go out , get things done, have some fun by herself, etc. But I have no clue what I would do with a month off for example. I do not think I have taken more than 10 days off in a row since the summer after Law School, which was about a quarter century ago [:)]
