A second US patrol sub in the Sea of Japan has taken up a blockade position off Maizuru on the N coast of Honshu – this move taken in response to a 9/11 Sigint entry indicating CV Kaga may be located in Maizuru. It’s quite possible the Sigint report is FOW, also possible CV Kaga may no longer be in Maizuru, Kaga could now be in Maizuru for shipyard repair or upgrade (there is a repair shipyard in Maizuru) – any of these could be true. Worth the chance of getting an opportunity on a KB carrier far behind the Japanese lines if CV Kaga is indeed in Maizuru. Japanese surface ASW did appear off Maizuru in response to the US sub’s arrival. AAR follows.

China: Chinese picket LCU’s in mountains of southern China remain in contact with unidentified Japanese LCU along the Tsuyung-Paoshan road.

A 9/15 Sigint entry reports a second Jap LCU on the Tsuyung-Paoshan road (25 Field AA Machine Cannon Co) now visible on the game map. Previous reported location of this LCU was in Manchuria – Pillager is likely transferring this unit from the Kwantung Army to Burma to reinforce flak defenses there. A possible conclusion to be reached from this transfer is that the Allied bombing campaign over Burma and southern China may be having more effect than my AAR and other reports are indicating (otherwise being no need for Pillager to transfer flak LCU to Burma and industrial centers in southern China). This development and other (similar) reports also reveal Pillager is dispersing Japanese flak forces across a wide area, a significant value for Allied bombing efforts (of all types) in the long term.

USAAF and RAF 4E bombers launch night bombing strike targeted against both airfield facilities and manpower in Rangoon - B-17's in the raid targeted on manpower, Liberators attacking the airfield. Targeting of manpower in this raid was mainly experimental to obtain first-hand data on effects of this type of attack and possible uses against more suitable objectives for manpower bombing strikes. Due to the small size of manpower "facilities" in Rangoon, bombing of manpower was not expected to yield a significant amount of damage. The raid did produce an unusually high number of Jap planes reported destroyed on the ground - 28 total (11 Ki-44 Tojo, 6 Ki-61 Tony, 11 A6M3a Zero). Pillager did not have CAP fighters operating over Rangoon, possibly the main factor accounting for the number of Jap planes destroyed on the ground. No Allied bombers lost. Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon from aerial recon – no Japanese ships anchored in port, 1 Jap TF in harbor (-1 from last report), 97 aircraft (all fighters), airfield damage 16, 13 Jap LCU’s, light industry 9(32), refinery 192(9), fires 51.

It appears there may be some value to bombing strikes on manpower centers – in addition to the minor refinery damage in Rangoon, the fires from manpower hits may have some role in the slow rate of repair on Rangoon airfield and possibly other unseen factors. If repairs and delays to repair in Rangoon are costing Pillager supply points from any stockpiles he has in Burma, all the better. This would serve both my intended objectives of an Allied bombing campaign over Burma and adjacent areas of southern China – reducing capability or completely rendering useless this region as (1) a staging area for Japanese operations into India or sea areas in the western Indian Ocean, and (2) providing any substantial economic input to the overall Japanese war economy. Overall Allied strategy in Southeast Asia theatre at this point in the campaign remains entirely defensive. With the fall of China, any Allied land offensive into Burma will likely encounter significant problems above and beyond those that occurred historically. The slow drip of Japanese plane losses in Burma is an added cost in supply points and HI to replace the casualties, before even considering pilot losses. Small quantities of damage accumulated over a period of time has equal benefit to the one “big bang” strike in terms of the big picture.

Unidentified Jap TF detected off Rangoon (hex location 51, 56), possibly the Jap TF departing Rangoon this game turn (see recon report above).

Detected status of Jap base in Magwe from aerial recon (after raid below) – 85 aircraft (all fighters), 15 Jap LCU’s, oil production 135(166), refinery 97(4).

China: Sigint entry for 9/23 is indicating elements of Jap 23 Independent Mixed Brigade are loading or already enroute via sea transport for Nikunau. 23 Brigade is a veteran LCU of the Chungking battles.

Summary of Operations 9/25/43

Eastern US: Transport convoy EX-50 (19 ships) departing for Australia via Capetown. Cargo aboard the convoy includes 158 USA Base Force, one USN night fighter air squadron, 56K supply.

Eastern Pacific: Ship collision at sea between two large xAK in outbound transport convoy WP-92 bound for the South Pacific east of Hawaii. The two xAK involved in the collision were detached from the convoy and proceeding to Pearl Harbor to unload cargo and enter shipyard repair. Ship collisions at sea in large transport TF are not common occurrences but do happen – this a calculated risk in operating a large-scale transport convoy system. Collisions are a small probability in TF with large numbers of ships, other factors may also apply.

Central Pacific: Sigint entries for 9/24 report intercepted Jap radio signals from multiple locations throughout the Central Pacific area – Maleolap, Nikunau, Tabiteuea. No visible Japanese forces or activity observed at Maleolap. Unidentified Jap aircraft are shown based at both Tabiteuea and Nikunau, ship(s) in port also detected at Tabiteuea.

Summary of Operations 10/04/43

South Pacific: Japanese night bombing raid on Suva. From the AAR below it’s not clear as to exactly what the raid was targeting. One G4M Betty reported destroyed by flak. No Allied planes destroyed - no loss or damage to ships, port or airfield facilities in Suva. There had been a local (in-theatre) convoy of small transports unloading in Suva, this convoy finished unloading without incident and now departed.

No Allied fighters were flying night CAP over Suva (only daylight CAP patrols). My estimate is the Japanese (Pillager’s) experience in this night bombing episode not greatly different from most of my own (Allied) except the availability of (Allied) 4E bombers does provide a somewhat better chance of occasionally hitting the jackpot under favorable conditions. AAR’s follow.

Ship collision (between two xAK) in transport convoy WP-88 now approaching New Zealand. One xAK is moderately damaged, the second ship only light damage, no loss of cargo (supply points only) on either xAK. Damaged xAK are being detached from the main body of WP-88 to move independently – this measure allowing the main body to reach destination on schedule with no loss of movement speed. Both damaged xAK from WP-88 expected to reach port safely.

Sigint entry for 10/03 reports Jap 4 Air Defense AA Rgt now located at Ndeni - this LCU transferred from the Japanese Home Islands. Pillager’s flak LCU transfers from the Home Islands to reinforce outer perimeter bases will likely be a welcome development for USAAF strategic bombing come 1945.
