Oct 25th 1944................

The weather was not kind today ....as AAG 1 was socked in.....and no follow up air strikes were flown........also Jessleton was also socked in so none of my land based airgroups flew either.........I've kept them on station.......but I fear Speedy will spot them and his Superforts will kill them before they have a chance to fly.......alas it is a chance I must take at this stage............

The Iwo invasion has begun.......Speedy lost 8-10 ships(msw/de/lst/lci) to mines and Coastal guns........and suffered at least 20 more with heavy damage.........mines also struck 1BB 2CVE 2CL and lots of escorts......there are still 4,000 mines in the water....but mines are really only effective on the first day of an invasion....so I don't hold out much hope.........Steven managed to land about 2,500 av first turn .....I have 1,000 av in place.......he will land, I expect, at least 5,000 av worth of troops..........Iwo will I hope hold for at least 1 more week.....and then the HIs will really come under his might hammer..............

Burma is frustrating......as some ghost units.....that I can't see.....and therefore can't move.......but Speedy can see....are allowing him to Shock attack down the railine......toward Bangkok at max speed........I hope they don't help him jump over the river.

26th Oct. 1944.........

A poor day for Penguinkind........

AAG 1 was attacked by airgroups from Jessleton....and although no ships were hit the 50 Zekes on CAP all died........to a loss of about 12 US fighters......then the airstrike from AAG 1 went in......not a single plane got through the CAP.........140 planes lost to no allied losses........I'm now steaming as fast as I can back to HK.......as the hunter becomes the hunted........

Also as I feared Speedy's superforts hit most of my nearby airfields.........more planes lost.......and no land based aircraft attacked.....

At Iwo the invasion continues.......Steven lost 10-12 lci/lst/escorts....to mines and coastal guns.......but has now 4,000 AV ashore.....he will i suspct double this in the next 2-3 days........

I did manage to sink S-43 off Northern Japan.......

But the day will be most remembered for the destruction of SAG 7.........snuck in through sheer speed......they didn't come back.......

Keep a stiff upper beak up, Faber.  You're doing great considering the odds.

Thanks Mike............Once Iwo falls then I'm going to need a stiff drink before running each turn........

Readers, as you know it is rare that I post Combat Reports........but this one will give you a flavour of the current state of the game........it is day three of the Iwo invasion........and my mines and coastal guns are running out of steam......next turn will be the last that they have any effect.........

Also all my CL skippers are now avoiding me......perhaps it is the rate at which these ships are going down........I had hoped to surprise the Allies........but they got the luck of the draw.........and SAG 4 and SAG 6.....followed SAG 7 to the bottom of the deep blue sea.......

A6M3a's were in action today.......as rather shamfacedly(sp) I have to admit to running out of Zeke's..........with oil scarce and not all my factories producing all the time........some airframes are hard to come by...........a group of A6M3a Kami. attacked 2 Iowa class battleships.....one hit...but not surprisingly bounced off........

Iwo fort lvls are brought down to 7 as another Allied Del. attack pushed my troops back further into their caves.......I lost 4,000 men.....Speedy about 1,000.....so I fear Iwo will fall sooner than I had hoped......probably in the next 3 days.......

My mines have Indeed run out of steam....with 1,500 still present......only 6 ships hit mines today..........

One of my I-boats was sunk without firing a shot 180 miles south of Iwo............

I've now turned off all the shipping I can.....as I feel the war has only 120-180 days left to run.......the only ships still on their way are DDs/Subs/one CVE(10 days)/and 2 CLs.........

Speedy's CV groups are edging toward the HIs........as I fear another raid ..........he has also moved to interdict any more SAGs I may try and sneak in.........

Hi Capt........I think the Combat Report is misleading here....as it list ONLY the transports that were hit and their escorts........Speedy has hundreds of transports at Iwo....most undamaged.......but still I do feel the mines have done as well as I could have expected.....

Speedy is back from Spain and in fine spirits....so the war continues....


Iwo hangs on by it's fingernails for one more turn.......plenty of supply ....lvl 6 forts....but outnumbered 5-1 and disruption and fatigue is rife.......


The last dead penguins are gone from Kuching.....

Nov 1st (I think) 1944.......

SAG 1 (Mutsu, Yamato......and escorts) entered Jessleton Harbour just after midnight....CA Mogami and 1 DD hit a mine each on the way in (one of my old mines).........and were met by an Alleid TF of 1CA 1 CL and 6-8 DDs.....after a fairly uneventful exchange of gunfire the Allies ran away......giving SAG 1 a clear sight of a large Transport TF............SAG 1 sank 4 DEs and 4-6 transports and retired........

SAG 2 (Kongo and escorts) entered Jessleton harbour at appx. 1 AM.........and encountered an Allied CVE TF..........SAG 2 sank 1 CVE .....damaged another ....and sank 4 escorts(DDs and DEs).........then went on to bombard the base.......a rather disappointing bombardment causing little or no damage...(200 casualties reported).......SAG 2 then retired.......

As dawn broke aircraft from Jeeslton caught and sank Mogami(scuttled 98sys-97flt) and the DD that had also struck a mine........

The main objective of this operation was to catch the 2 badly damaged CVs that had been spotted over the last 2 weeks taking refuge at Jessleton.....and in this I failed.

While these CVs are out of the war for the duration....one can but look at the points situation and hope for those 700+ points......but I fear they are now safe..........as with Allied aircover........I have no way to hurt them.........

The destruction of the CVE TF.....means Speedy now has only 1 CVE in seaworthy condition........and this should slow down any further advance from Jesstleton.........or at least restrict it to Lightning CAP range......or force a CV group from the central Pac. past the Phils.......and my Kamikazi groups there.......

I am surprised that Speedy isn't moving in force on Singapore....as this would allow the British fleet to support further Ops. in this area.......

Mass air-raid on Singers by Superforts.........and a large air strike on Ulithu.......

Majuro was invaded........and many of my starving troops were destroyed.......

Iwo was Del. attacked again.....forts down to lvl 5

Smooth move! Having BB's still capable of doing damage in November '44 is an impressive achievement. And at least things turned out better for you than the historical battle off Samar.[;)]

Nov. 4-5th 1944........


SAG 1 and 2 bombarded Jessleton today (the 5th).......with very disappointing results.....around 200 allied personel as casualties....no aircraft destroyed.....no runway hits....no port hits.....and no ships in port hit.......which is a shame as I think 2 badly damaged CVs are there........lost a DD to PT boats on the way in.......this may prove too expensive to keep up.....but as soon as he gets the airfield up to size 4.....these missions will have to stop......

Superforts hit Brunei and destroyed some Jills I had there ......

Speedy is moving troops into Malaya........so maybe he will try for Singapore before Bangkok.......

Bangkok looks a trap to me......but if I abandon it.....the next defensible line is probably Hanoi.......I have 4-7 turns to decide.........

Iwo will fall tomorrow....and the A2A slaughter will begin.......

Iwo holds ....but Speedy achieved 4-1 odds..........next turn I think will be the end...........

Otherwise a very quiet turn apart from Speedy's 30+ bombing missions...........

Nov 7th 1944...........

Iwo falls........and in fact fell last turn...........a fact which I overlooked while running the turn at 5 AM..........more coffee required........

This turn I managed to sneak some Kami's past his carriers........they hit 2 AKs....which I feel will dock and not sink....so really a waste of 40 Zekes....

The Iwo action had a feel of realism.....as I had decided not to overload the Island..........while I could have put 4,000 AV ashore and made it impossible.........the 1,000 AV provided a good challange.......they are now all trapped in caves and will be lost over the next 2-3 weeks........

I had also laid about 6,000 mines............again I could have maxed these out at 20,000 ish..........but looking at the results....I feel this was a much fairer way to play........

Speedy conducted his assualt with great skill using all the lessons he has learned from earlier invasions..........he lost around 30-40 ships (I'm sure he will detail his losses)..........most of these to mines/coastal guns.........


I lost around 500 Kamikazis.........and one SAG that snuck in........see earlier post for ship details......


My A2A losses will now accelerate....as his Bombing of the HI's begin in earnest....now with escorts..........in the 2 weeks I expect to lose around 2,000 aircraft.....but I will defend the HIs...and not fly my airforce to Peking to hide.........

The final phase is now under way with my forces under pressure across the map..........

I will fight to the end........and then hope to slip away.......along with the Imperial Treasury to somewhere warm and exotic......I've sent Lacrimosa ahead.......

Two uneventful-ish turns......

Another unsuccesful Bombardment of Jesstleton..........I lose a DD to PTs......Speedy 4PTs lost......and my Bombardment TF hits nothing...even though there are 2 damaged CVs in port.........that is now 4 Bombardment attacks that have yielded nothing but dead DDs..........


In prep for the air war over the HIs....I have been slimming down the Air units once more.....15 more air-groups disbanded.....

Here is a map of Burma........no secret as to what I feel Speedy will do.....he has punched through the token resistance at Alor......and will move to Singapore.......

He will then try and Flank Bangkok by landing at Camranh Bay.....or Hue....or Saigon......and unite the British fleet with the units there.......

If I had supply I would counter attack around Bangkok.......I may still..........
