Well, it's nice to be back after a week of trying to get my Mom's house ready to sell.  My Mom moved in with us shortly before I came back from my deployment and I finally was able to take a week of vacation to start to prepare it to sell.  The house is 150 miles from ours so I stayed there all week (no TV, radio or computer).[X(]  I rented a 40 cu yd dumpster and practically filled it (110 big trash bags and untold numbers of boxes and other junk).  It's amazing how much junk a couple of 80+ yr old biddies (Mom and Aunt) can accumulate in a lifetime.  My Mom kept all her mail since my Dad died in 1982.[X(]  That was scary. 
 
Damn, I moved out 25 years ago to get away from my Mom, and there she is following me.[:(]
 
Anyway, other than the Monday blues here at work, it's good to be among you crazies again.[:D]

Yup, junk mail as well as all her other mail. She filled up my old bedroom with it. The room was several feet deep in bags full of mail.[X(]

Apparently, the elderly are quite prone to hoarding... almost everyone i've known that had to deal with an elderly relative has had to clean out a huge mess of hoarded cr@p. My brother's father-in-law would actually collect OTHER people's used pizza boxes and hoarded them...

That's why I've started lobbying my parents, who are 65 to start tossing stuff. It seems to be working. They have been purging things and recently started talking about getting a smaller house.

The only "elderly" (71) relative I have is my mother, and I (33) hoard more than she does...[:D]

Yeah, that's the usual excuse, but on closer examination (with population studies, etc.) it probably is an excuse only.

i'm sure my brother's father-in-law suffered a severe shortage of used pizza boxes during the depression, causing him to want to hoard them now... after all, the COULD be useful... [8|] [:'(]

My mom didn't grow up in the depression. She still has stuff in the attic that I played with in kindergarten (Some 30-odd years ago). I truly dread going through that attic.

Hee, you think that's bad? Half of the Japanese AKs and APs in the game never existed in real life. The developers have admitted that they gave the Japanese several times their historical merchant marine capacity.

Huh? The usual post (from players, i will admit) is that there were not enough merchant ships put in. I know that lots of USN transport (official USN ships) were left out, but i hadn't heard that the Japanese ships were put in...

Is the admission "that they gave the Japanese several times their historical merchant marine capacity" somewhere accessible? Is this based on haulage capacity, or what???

Players usually are gripping that all the junks, fishing boats and little tiny 50 tonners were not included from what I've read.

The overstocking of Japan with AKs and APs was admitted to way back when, somewhere here in the forum. The stated reason was to make up for the losses that the AI would take because it wasn't programmed to keep shipping away from Allied land-based air as I recall.

Right - iirc, they've done studies that have shown that the rates of hoarding from elderly people who went through periods of deprivation (like the depression) are pretty similar to those who didn't go through deprivation.

I wouldn't be surprised if elderly women do most of the hoarding. It's most likely related to the female nesting instinct.

And you got off light if you only filled one dumpster. Cleaning out my father's (small) house took two. And three different complete cleanings by three different people/groups to get it to the point of being able to sell it as a "fixer-upper". *sounds of disgust*

Well, since women live longer, that might be true. But something seems to go wonky in elderly brains in general in the matter of keeping stuff, so i'm guessing that rate of hoarding between males and females adjusted for age might be pretty similar, although i don't recall seeing a study.
