Please forgive me for not being clear in the first place: I only meant if BB Valiant is not available due to dire circumstances, what about optioning out with other British BBs already on the map in addition to Valiant? Could not one of them serve as well?
But I get your point that any swap-out should be "in class", so to speak. Otherwise, more gaminess.
Incidentally, I know it's got to be in the manual somewhere, but exactly how does one go about scuttling a ship? Something classy, like Graf Spee...
Cheers!
Hag
Yes check the manual - Valiant CAN be withdrawn while still damaged. I think you are allowed up to 50 points damage in any category - but the manual will tell you.
And you cannot scuttle until the ship has very high damage , usually 85+ floatation damage or system damage and fires raging.
I would just sail Valiant to CT and if it cannot withdraw on arrival, repair just enough damage that it can withdraw. Allow three days for clearing the dockyard if you have to refloat it to meet the withdrawal date.

The Valiant is traveling about two hexes per day. It is going to take ages to get off map, ages to get to Cape Town, and ages to repair enough to withdraw or scuttle the Valiant.
Let's hope that she sinks on the way to Cape Town.

Rio,
If I was in a lean-to bar in Chungking and a beautiful woman picked me up and we walked through the collapsing streets of wailing, down past deserted markets to her red-lit room, and we got to the moment that leads to other more provocative moments and she let slip her name was Sally Ann, I'd punch her out and go back to the lean-to for last call.

Good to hear from you!
I ponder a situation in which I have damaged ships trapped in yards when the enemy marches in. Ideally, I'd like to blow the whole sheebang sky high, or at least pull a Cherbourg, but at the very least trash my trapped ship, damage levels be damned.
And now I picture a programmer looking at me soberly and saying, "CaptHaggard—go home and take your 'suggestion' with you." LOL

If you want to damage the Valiant more you can run it at high speed and it will increase damage and possibly sink on it's own if you so desire.

Better to get it close enough to sinking to be able to scuttle before it sinks so you can save 10 percent on the VPs.

Rio,
If I was in a lean-to bar in Chungking and a beautiful woman picked me up and we walked through the collapsing streets of wailing, down past deserted markets to her red-lit room, and we got to the moment that leads to other more provocative moments and she let slip her name was Sally Ann, I'd punch her out and go back to the lean-to for last call.
Capt. Haggard-
You are really going to throw a fit when you meet Sumo Wrestlers Kamakazi Cheerleaders!

If you want to damage the Valiant more you can run it at high speed and it will increase damage and possibly sink on it's own if you so desire.
Bifi1961-
Creative thinking.
However, my luck more damage would occur, just enough to slow down the Valiant even more and she would hang-out between Bombay and Cape Town for the balance of the war costing me Political Points the entire war.
*chuckling*

Better to get it close enough to sinking to be able to scuttle before it sinks so you can save 10 percent on the VPs.
Hans-
I have dispatched the Repulse and the Prince of Wales to sink the Valiant!

Captain Haggard's Submarine Operations flames a Japanese AO.
Intelligence indicates Japan's 4/16th Java Militia Regiment and 7/11th Military Regiment are boarding transports bound for Rangoon.
Intelligence indicates that El Lobo already has a minimum of eighty units in Burma and I suspect he has more than 100 units already in Burma. It is crystal clear that El Lobo intends to fight hard in Burma.
Allied artillery continues to remain relatively ineffective one hex East of Ramree Island.

The Japanese aircraft bomb Chentu, Chungking, and Paoshan (combat report not copied and not pasted herein). No Japanese aircraft were destroyed. Numerous Japanese aircraft were damaged. The Allies experienced numerous air base and runway hits at Chengtu. Otherwise the Alies ground casualties were minimal.
El Lobo's ground forces attack Chungking, but wish they had not.

Allied artillery in Burma still sucks.
The 268th Motorised Armour Brigade and the two Chindit Brigades continue to inflict heavy losses on Japanese ground forces attacking from one hex East of Paoshan. In a couple days, the 87th Mountain Regiment will join the Chindit Brigades.
All airbases along the Imphal-Ledo line are now at level 4 and above. Bombers from Calcutta will fly to those bases tomorrow.
One or two more days and Lashio will be completely surrounded by U. S. Army Infantry Regiments. Bombers will commence bombing Lashio. In about two weeks, after supply has dwindled a bit and after the Allied bombers have softened up Japanese ground forces, the six U. S. Infantry Regiments will move into Lashio to attack and work toward capturing Lashio.

Time to sink somebody!

Combat Report
for
January 15, 1943
It was a relatively slow day in terms of combat.
Numerous Chinese Headquarter, Construction, and Artillery units have escaped the siege at Chungking and marched to the mountains Southwest of Kienko.
It appears that El Lobo is giving up his attempt to capture Colombo. Four Japanese ground units have evacuated Colombo. I suspect these units are heading for Trincomalee to board transports for...well, not sure where El Lobo will send them...Burma?
The Valiant refuses to sink and is heading for Cape Town at a snail's pace. This riddled bucket of iron is going to cost the Allies a heap of Political Points sorely needed to buy-out troops for Operation Sea Shark still scheduled to launch June 1, 1943.
