Afternoon Phase - Japanese strikes

Japan launches a heavy strike, which is intercepted by a strong CAP of almost 160 Wildcats.
Fighters did a good job taking down around 30 bombers before they reached the fleet.
I thinks the significant high number of potential targets helped, as they were busy spreading their attacks over 6 carriers, 4 escort carriers, 3 battleships and 4 AA cruisers.

Damage was really light [&o]
Saratoga, Yorktown, Copahee and Warspite will withdraw to Australia. Although they are still in shape for fighting, there is no need to risk them.

There were three additional Japanese strikes, but against the freighters at Kirakira and Rennel. They were intercepted by P-40s and suffered losses. In exchange they sank some small, and at this point irrevelevant xAPs/ xAKs.

The main Allied strike come very close after the Japanese's
It was a strong pack, and I would say without a doubt, a very successful one.
It was followed by 3 uncoordinated small strikes that only managed to bring pilot casualties. It also confirmed that Zuikaku was on a very bad shape: heavy smoke and dead on the water

I need to figure out which squadrons will remain for tomorrow's battle. With Yorktown, Saratoga and Copahee withdrawing, but fully operational, I can do some reshuffling of squadrons to guarantee a good strike pack for tomorrow.

For my emails with Steve; he thought there were no carriers, only CVEs. So he "warped" full speed to hit the beach head, also hoping to eliminate the helpless CVEs. Key point is that we both have good naval search here, and we both failed to spot the other's fleets. You can see from a few posts before that other than a submarine attack, I completely failed to spot the KB. I will give a boatload of whiskey to that skipper, as I would had thought he left to Timor because I would had trusted my good nav search. And of course, the dynamics of today's battle would had been very different. I might had moved back outside the range of the carrier battle, or even worst, split the TFs.

He also said that my assumption of the KB near Port Moresby at the end of last turn was wrong. This would had been the case if he was at "mission speed", but he set full speed and KB was already near Woodlark island.

I saw some land based fighters intercepting one of the unescorted, uncoordinated strikes. it won't ever be as good as a full 100% 0 range CAP IMO.

And yes, the game changes completely. For once, I will soon form a massive supply, fuel, engineers, base force, etc for Darwin... then it will grow it to level 9 and from then on Japan can say goodbye to the DEI

As per the Japanese carrier toughness... I will let Halsey and friends, including recently arrived Sangamons, to test the concept tomorrow [;)]
My guess, is that Soryu and Shokaku will survive, everybody else will end as a coral reef.

Come now, would the Imperial Japanese forces have surrendered after this! He must fight on! Though, having never progressed this far in the war I do not know what this does to the morale of your opponent.

BUT

It puts him in no worse a spot really than the Allied player is in during the first part of the game--assuming he has some of his carrier and surface fleet left. And as someone who has only played this early part of the war as the Allies, the game is most certainly still fun!

In fact, in many ways it is really a lot of fun trying to wage a guerrilla war at sea trying to slow down the juggernaut.

In other words, Jorge, in our game, don't expect the Allies to ever give in! Here is the new USS Houston, and if necessary there will be another, and still another... [;)]

The battle is still in development, but I am confident that tomorrow whatever remains of the KB will be eliminated.

Only exception could be Soryu and Chitose, he will most likely run them at full speed towards Rabaul.
If this happens, then KB will become, at most, a raiding force

We will see, after that, and assuming the game will continue, I need to reformulate strategy as "short leapfrogs" are no longer required.
That said I have several LCUs very close to 100% prep, and it would be a waste to put those back to 20s.
But once these "close" objectives are achieved, I will start preparing for much deeper operations

Second day results were inconclusive


I can be certain that his most damaged ships went to Munda, there the carriers hit again CVs Akagi and Zuikaku; in two strikes Zuikaku was hit by a torpedo in the 1st. And on the second it was gone, instead Akagi was hit by 6 bombs. I certain they are gone.

His main force went to Buin, there is where I found the strongest CAP. I have no idea what is there as the relatively weak strike pack sent from Chenango, Suwannee and Sangamon failed to penetrate it. Instead it got mauled heavily. Tomorrow I have naval bombardment, recon and bombers on port strike all set to find out!

Then, the battleships: he cleverly move his battleships as bait, knowing torpedoes were spent. this of course to attract the main strike pack... which he did... BB Nagato is on fire, but all bombs hit the armor deck.

Finally, CM Okinashima was also found and likely went down

Knowing that Buin was the hidden spot of the damaged carriers, I decided to send the SCTFs to "inspect" that port. Also, remember that Buin is a level 1 port, which means it doesn't provide protection to anchored ships.

So I set 3 battleship and one cruiser TFs to naval bombard it. I even made the gamble of sending the carrier escorts. I guess this is what he was expecting, because he also decided to send many battleship and cruiser TFs. Which meant nothing other than one of the biggest slugfest brawl I have ever seen.

Night Phase:
Night battles started with BB South Dakota finding a lone carrier, CV Hiryu, escorted by destroyers. The screen was so well executed that it managed to escape with minor losses (one destroyer likely sunk).

Then the first fist fight: The battle of the carrier escorts
BBs North Carolina/ Indiana tag teamed against the evil BBs Kirishima and Hiei. And the good guys won this fight; Kirishima went down. North Carolina got hit five times.

Then the second fight: Experience vs Youth
This time ancient Yamashiro taught a lesson to newcomer punks North Carolina and Indiana, As unbelievable as this might sound, Yamashiro, with only E Otori as escort, managed to put 8 shells into Indiana and one into North Carolina, the later ending on fire/ heavy damage. Yamashiro in the other hand ended receiving only 5 hits, which put it on fire.

Third fight: David vs Goliath
Light cruiser Tenryu found South Dakota, who once again failed to perform according to (diminishing) expectations I had on him; after a short gun exchange, both decided this was enough.

Then night bombings:
BB Washington and cruiser TF composed of Nashville, Honolulu and St Louis bombed Buin, destroying many fighter planes.

Moreover, according to my calculations, this was the only place were CV Hiyo and CVL Ryujo... as they were too damaged to run away... which means they most likely sank.

AM Phase
The morning starts with KB pilots launching over my dispersed fleet, and yes, I said KB pilots, most survived and re-based to some of the multiple airfields available in the Solomons. They managed to hit DD Gwin and then harassed CLs Honolulu and Nashville. And although they failed to score any hit, this was too much for them; both ended as coral reefs

Then Allies turn. CAs Kako, Mogami and CL Yubari recieved a bomb each. This is surprisingly low for the more than 70 dive bombers and more than 20 torpedo bombers launched.
