Afternoon Phase - Japanese strikes
Japan launches a heavy strike, which is intercepted by a strong CAP of almost 160 Wildcats.
Fighters did a good job taking down around 30 bombers before they reached the fleet.
I thinks the significant high number of potential targets helped, as they were busy spreading their attacks over 6 carriers, 4 escort carriers, 3 battleships and 4 AA cruisers.
Damage was really light [&o]
Saratoga, Yorktown, Copahee and Warspite will withdraw to Australia. Although they are still in shape for fighting, there is no need to risk them.
There were three additional Japanese strikes, but against the freighters at Kirakira and Rennel. They were intercepted by P-40s and suffered losses. In exchange they sank some small, and at this point irrevelevant xAPs/ xAKs.
