Malaya
A little excitement this turn. Since the beginning of the game, we had secretly plotted the 1st Raiders to land at Malacca. This turn we deemed the time to be right, and we were right for once. The following combat report excerpts tell the tale and the screen shot shows the results. This puts us behind the Allied remnants at Kuala Lumpur and accelerates our drive into Johore.

Central China
A little excitement here as well. Our 11th Army at Sinyang finally attacked and again our luck held and he got a 5 to 1 result and kicked the Chinese out of the hex. This sets us up for the attack on Nanyang, which will now begin.
The Chinese do have many, many units in the area, and we only have a few, so the probability of actually capturing and holding Nanyang is small, but we try anyway, because in China, the best defense, is a good offense!

Malaya
Last turn our 1st Raiders airborne unit took Malacca trapping about 10 Allied units farther North at Kuala Lumpur. This turn we railed in an infantry regiment, a mortar battalion and an aviation battalion to reinforce Malacca. Some Oscars and Nates attempted to defend the base, but the Allies hit it hard, though they paid a price in heavier aircraft losses. Overall, we are happy with the process of the battle this turn.

We also railed in another regiment which will set up a blocking position one hex NE of Malacca, another engineer unit and another aviation unit will complete the process of railing in to Malacca itself.

It looks like some Allied units are actually headed North out of Jahore and Singapore. We consider this to be fabulous. We would much rather fight these units to the North of Singapore than hunkered down inside Singapore. However, after they detect our reinforcements, we would expect them to turn around and head back in to Singapore. But time will tell.

Resources
Haven't updated this in a while. Things are generally under control, supply is dropping, probably due to some enthusiastic factory expansions, resources are also "dropping" but there are quite a lot on board ships, biggest resource providers are Haiphong, Taihoku (NE Formosa) and Keijo (Korea). I added a column at the end of this spreadsheet to track resources in Honshu.

Results
Four fighter units failed to fly (either turn) and we wound up losing 34 Sally II and 10 Sally I between China and Malaya.

This will accelerate the implementation on the "on map" bomber training program as one Sally unit is now sufficiently depleted in pilots as to warrant filling it up with the "newbees" (20-35 EXP replacement pilots) and letting it train up on map.

But operationally and strategically this changes nothing. We have bomber units sitting around waiting for a spot on the Malaya air fields, so we will fly some more in.

In Malaya, we will attack the Kuala Lumpur hex this turn, most of our combat units in Malaya are now in this hex. At Malacca, we have an infantry regiment as well as the airborne and other support units defending the hex. An Aussie Brigade has entered the hex, but I do not think it can take the hex by itself.

Another IJA infantry regiment had railed to a blocking position 1 hex NE of Malacca, so if we can retreat the Allied Kuala Lumpur forces, this blocks the one "good" retreat hex, that might allow them to escape back to Singapore.

The 38ID will unload at Haiphong and begin working its way to Burma, addition of this third division to the 15 Army will bring the Army to full planned strength for the Burma campaign. We will need to convert some additional fighter units to Oscars, but we have accumulated 35 in the pool and are now buliding several per turn.

In China, we are advancing on Nanyang (several hexes NW of Sinyang) and thus at least retaining the initiative. In the South, he has one hugh (300+ AV) Corps in Chuhsien along with other units, so we do not have enough strength to shift them out of this hex.

The 11th Army will control the troops holding Sinyang, the 12th Army will control those troops attacking Nanyang. There are additional troops to the flanks and rear that can be brought to bear.

Battle for Jahore
The below screen shot shows the status of the Battle for Jahore.

In the NE, the poor 22nd Indian Brigade is pounded from the air and hounded from the rear by the IGID.

In the West Center, the Allied concentration at Kuala Lumpur is now the target of three divisions of the 25th Army. The Allies have about one division equivalent.

And farther South at Malacca, we have a reinforced Regiment defending the base against one Australian Brigade attacking.

Malaya
At Kuala Lumpur where we have the bulk of our 5ID, 21ID, 56ID, we performed two days of "deliberate" attacks. The Allied units held and even repaired some fort levels, so this will be a longer fight. We will rest our worn out infantry this turn and attack with our armor and artillery only.
To the direct West, one of the Allied units (one of the three base forces) withdrew and is now blocking the rail line down to Malacca, however, we had two combat engineer regiments rail into that hex, so these two units will jump off their trains and attack the baseforce. Either way, the Allied units at Kuala Lumpur are now surrounded and cannot trace out to a friendly base.
A bit farther to the NE (see map above) the IGID has now entered the hex with the 22nd Ind Brigade and 2 RCT of the IG will attack, while the 3rd RCT will pursue.
Down at Malacca, we have completely repaired the air field. The Aussie Bde that came to "investigate" now seems to be turning for home and heading South. We are improving the AF up to level-2.
In the air, we lost 7 Sally II and 3 Sally I but shot down 7 Beef-a-lows in return. That has been the pattern over the past 2 weeks, trading Sally's for Beef-a-lows, of course, not directly. The Beef-a-lows shot down the Sallys and our fighters shoot down the Beef-a-lows. But net/net, we've lost about 60 Sallys and got about 45 Beef-a-lows.
Once we get the Jahore airfields up and working, we will start flying combat missions over Singapore, certainly by the end of the month, hopefully sooner, depends on what happens at Kuala Lumpur.

Our 12th Army complete their cross river attack NE of Sinyang and retreated one Chinese unit there. We are now poised to continue the advance on Nanyang.

Well, in the event we decided to shock attack everywhere in Malaya - and it worked great! All 11 Allied units which shared hexes with us have now surrendered. The Battle of Jahore is over. We now need to organize the airfields and prepare to attack Singapore.

China
We defeated a stack of 5 Chinese units in Northern China, this will help secure the North Flank of our advance on Nanyang.

Sorry, I've been on vacation/holiday in the UK for the past week and haven't had time to post much ...

Our game is still on version 1080 and trade offs (as always) are apparent. While this gives us the "uber pilot training" which certainly helps us, we have to suffer the pains of the earlier surface combat "wipe out" routines which mean that any transport TF contacted by an Allied Cruiser TF is automatically wiped out. Now understand that all of our transport TFs have been protected by heavy cruiser forces larger than the attacking Allied cruiser forces, but in the 1080 and early surface combat routines, this matters not. All that matters is that an Allied surface force contact a Japanese transport TF and the Japanese transport TF will be wiped out.

But net/net things are probably not as bad as they seem. Our forces at Palembang may yet survive - and we have badly beat up the Allied Singapore airfarce. Also our ground forces in Malaya have used the respite gained (from the B17 attacks) to continue their reorganization prior to crossing the creek into Singapore.

In China, we continue to advance on Nanyang, though the Chinese have brought out their telephone pole from Ichang to play.

21-22 Jan 42

China
Still traveling, so not much time for posting. Japanese forces are driving on Nanyang, while Chinese forces are driving on Hankow.

Malaya
Our infantry divisions are still assembling at Malacca so we can build them up prior to crossing the creek. Independent units have pushed South to take Jahore and Mersing.

At Palembang, we sent in the 1st Raiders, but they have not been able to break the stalemate. We did get a goodly sized fast transport convoy in and out, so our troops have supplies now.

Celebes/Timor
A report from Nik's area, Nik took Kendari this turn, but his attack on Lautern was not successful. His carriers finally got a couple of Allied surface ships, looks like the Allies have broken their cruisers and DDs down into groups of two ships to make them harder to hit.

Burma
Our 38ID is enroute to join the 33ID and 55ID which are now advancing on Pegu. The Allies did not actually defend Moulmein, so we have captured that location.

on questioning Admiral Goto on how a big Allied cruiser force managed to slip by his four cruiser close support Butai in broad daylight......Admiral Goto said that the sun got into his eyes.

Our advance on Nanyang is continuing, the Chinese are camping on Hankow.

Malaya
Palembang still a stalemate. We delivered another load of supplies this turn, so our troops are well supplied.

All Allied bases in Malaya are secured, all Allied units are now aboard Singapore. Our units are marshalling at Jahore and preparing to cross the creek. Malacca has built up to a level-4 and will be our main bomber base.

Timor
Nik managed to take Lautern, finally.

If we are able to take Nanyang, then this will open up the possibility of sweeping to the North and taking out the two groups up there. This would knock out about 50 Chinese units total, which would remove, at least temporarily, their offensive ability.

Malaya
Given the detachments of 124 Regt (to Nik, now on Mindanao) and 146 Regt (now on Borneo) we will actually only be able to recombine the 5ID before we cross the creek. This should happen shortly. In the mean time, we will try to sustain the bombing attack on Singapore.

China
At Nanyang, we performed two days of deliberate attacks, but not only did we fail to reduce the forts, but they actually grew a level, now to level-3. We will wait a turn and then try again.

Malaya
We were able to recombine both the 5ID and the 18ID, so only the 56ID will go in broken down. All creek crossing troops are now headed for Jahore. Additional aviation support arrived at Malacca, so we moved in two additional Sally Sendai and one additional Oscar Chutai. We are now hitting Singapore from 15,000 feet and hitting the airfield, the port and ground troops. We're doing very little damage at this high an altitude, but we're not losing much either. One Oscar Chutai cover capped Singapore that turn and intercepted some transports, not sure whether he is moving people out or in. My guess is he is moving people out to Palembang.

Sumatra
Quiet day for both sides, most of our surface ships are out of AA ammo and are heading back to CRB to rearm, but we have been able to cobble together one CL/DD group which will try to Fast-Tran in the 124th Regt from Borneo. The good thing about this regiment is that it has good prep for Palembang and so it will be a welcome reinforcement. Once we have this unit over, we will try another attack.

Philippines
Here the Americans shock attacked and caused a bunch of casualties on both sides, more on our side than on theirs. We have the historical amount of troops facing the historical amount of troops but the American firepower is significantly more than ours. We are buildling up the forts at Aparri to support a withdrawal if that becomes necessary. Eventually Allied supply will run low, but it is still only January, so they may still have a lot left.

Timor
Nik started landing at Timor today and KB fought another daylight surface battle against Allied PT Boats at Kendari.
