You have 3 big subs which aren't good for operations - Nautilus, Argonaut and ?Narw? that historically were soon shifted to supplies, mines, and troops. Wouldn't use short-rangers - ie., wouldn't dream of using S-boats for supplies - they are smaller for supplies and their torpedoes have a much higher hit rate than the fleet boats. Same goes for RN or Dutch boats. But other uses such as mines and supplies are not out of the question for the USN fleet boats (with the fish names).

wpurdom: Those submarines are currently at sea but yes they do have an nice amount of cargo capability.

I did recall Argonaut and Nautilus to Midway and will load it up with supplies.

The dutch subs and those S-boats have been very effective so far and I still think they are better used as an offensive weapons.

Java (february 6th - 7th 1942)


The enemy did capture Den Passar base near Soerabaja. Those troops he managed to land were enough but it was an close call though.

Japanese airforce had sweeped the airfield at Soerabaja for days now. This time around these strikes were not unopposed.

I did move in few Hurricane fighters and in the end we downed some 30 enemy Zero fighters and lost only 8 Hurricanes. That was an nice exchange ratio for sure.

Things are intense as stated and I think we will soon see some major landings on many fronts.

So far though we have interupted quite a few enemy offensive operations which is the key objective to achieve.

Yah let me clarify what i meant when I said short range subs. I meant your cruiser subs (norwhall, arognaut nataulus) and your Dolphin class subs as IIRC they have an endurance of 6k and still use mk 14s. No way would I ever advocate using your S-boats for anything other than anti-shipping ops early in the war.
 
I must also tip my hat to you Az you have done a great job with your surface fleet in the DEI and realy added up some damage that will hopefully slow things down a bit.
 
Have you devloped a plan yet for Burma, OZ and SoPac? When do you start to see agressive moves coming toward PM, Noumea, Fiji? 

jrlans: Yeah, that is an good clarification. The subwarfare has been doing great job. A couple of CV's hit and plenty of merchant ships too. I have done quite a lot of mine warfare too with these ships. Too bad that noway to tell how effective this has been.
 
I'am very pleased with surface combat ships. As the title says "lessons learned" well that is very much so in this area too. The best thing about is that most valuable ships are mostly intact and ready for action.
 
There is an strategy in place and to recap those areas:
 
Burma
 
Not much sense to fight in the "plains". Rangoon is gone and it wasn't defended. Most likely will start moving my troops towards Mandalay.
 
That is not the main thing either but I think I will fight around Myithkina. There are 3 chinese corps building up strenght and experience. These should add some 1000av soonn enough and 600-700av worth other allied troops extra bonus.
 
This is very much secondary theatre of operations though.
 
Australia
 
At the moment building up forts and airfields (only where it is suitable). The airfields in northern areas are not build up.
 
The experience levels and equipment are not up to date so for now we lay low here. No sense of sending badly equipped units into Darwin area.
 
I don't even mind him landing there nor sending more infantry into Burma. These are not our operational main areas.
 
Airforce is building experience in safe bases etc.
 
South Pacific
 
 
I have put a lot of effort here. The units that are send out are checked and than checked some more.
 
There are already strong forces in Samoa, Fiji's, Christmas Island and some of the atolls that lay around here.
 
Lets just say that there are no easy pickings left for him.
 
I think that New Caledonia is a bit overrated at the start. Why? Itself it really doesn't give any advantage to the japanese. He needs Fiji's and Samoa's which I'am not about to give him.
 
I have moved units into New Caledonia but for the moment being it is "secondary" in this region. I don't want to spread my units too thin here. Allied player have good troops but the deployments need to be thought out.
 
The US fleet is at our disposal. It feels good to have all the carriers ready along with plenty of support surface combat ships.
 
Overall the southern pacific is coming along as planned and he will have his hands full. "Lessons learned" here too.
 

For your burma defence, I would sugest trying to build some forts on the dot base half way between Myitchina and Shweboo if you think you have time.  Its decent defensive terain and like clark allows you to build Myitchina up to recive transports and sport a decent defensive air force.  
 
As for northern Aus, with the change to the CD reutines holding Darwin might be more fesable now as i belive it has 9" CD guns in its fort. This should mean that a substantial surface force would be needed to supress it.  If you can keep Darwin's air fields open and get an Air HQ there (so you can eventualy use torpedos) you might be able to make it too costly to take.
 
 

Java (february 10th - 11th 1942)


This turn marks the day when the battle of Java has begun.

Allied PBY's spotted enemy ships advancing south towards Java on the morning of 10th.

The battle begun with some IJN elements bombarding our Base Force at Kalidjati. The coastal guns did some damage to his troops but the size of this invasion was huge.

ABDA aiforce took off in numbers but when the dust settled we had lost some 60 bombers and managed to hit just an single xAKL. I knew these guys were poor but not this poor.

The losses were mostly 139WH Dutch bombers and few Hudsons.

This was an tactical commitment of forces since I did not engage with divebombers nor torpedo bombers. I think it was an wise decision since I wanted to lower his AA and carrier
sorties ammo/numbers. ABDA airforce flew in a lot of sorties in the dates.

Not bad but he managed to land in 55th and 56 infantry regiments. Totalling +200av worth of AV value.

An reformed surface combat was ordered to intervene on these landings at 11th february.

Java (february 12th - 13th 1942)


Instead of moving those mediocre ABDA bombers out of the harms way I ordered them to stay put. The idea behind this was to consume his CAP and AA guns. It worked out ok since they did flew in quite a few missions.

The damage done was pretty much non-existant but they opened the way for our dive/torpedo bombers. I didn't engage with Hurricanes neither in initial landing day.

Highlight of the turn came when an somewhat organized group took off and headed towards KB...

I think CV Kaga is in bigtime trouble. Keep in mind that CV Zuikaku and CV Soryu were hit few turns back. I doubt they were sunk but CV Kaga might be an diffrent story.

The combat report indicated that CV Kaga launched some CAP fighters after this turn of events though.

The surface TF that I send to intervene did good job too...

That didn't go as planned for sure.

Den Passar airfield was hit hard too with LBA bombers. We did lose few bombers and escorts but managed to do noteworthy damage to the enemy airfield here.

jrlans: That is an excellent suggestion regarding the "dot" base. I did send an base force there in order to start building up forts.
 
Yep, the CD guns are working better with the later patches. I will readjust my strategy once I get an feeling what the speed of his advance will actually be.
 
The Air HQ suggestion is good. There just isn't many around from the start.

Excellent success with reducing the KB. Are you still planning to bring the USN CV's to the area?

How much AV did you get to Java as reinforcements?

It will be interesting to see which way he swings, if he goes after Soerabaja first with most of his forces then you can sortie out of Batavia and take his landing sites and cut him off from the rear.

String: Yeah, very happy about those carriers knocked out.
 
US carriers are at Hawaji. I wonder whether it is worth the trip anymore. The main landings have already happened.
 
There are some 1700av at Batavia in total. Also around 150av at Bandoeng... near Soerabaja there are maybe 400-500av worth of units.
 
He chose to swing towards Bandoeng and also landed near Soerabaja. I think that was an wise move.
 
We shall see what next few turns bring but he might be too cautious to let us cut him off.

Java (february 14th - 15th 1942)


Japanese entered the base at Bandoeng so it seems that the main landing force is heading towards Batavia.

Our surface combat TF engaged the enemy at Kalidjati. The end result few destroyers damaged and CL Ceres lost later due to Betty strikes...

CV Kaga seems to be moving towards Singapore. This is based on the combat.txt file showing her flying out few Zero's as CAP. I'am actually trying to intercept her with an small surface
combat TF. That carrier is not saling on top speed and with some major luck who knows. Worth the effort for sure though.

There were a lot of sorties flown and japanese definately have the upper hand on these. The Banshee and bomber crews got tired but managed to hit few transports.

IJN is also landing in more troops at Palembang...

I would love to see few more of transports hit. Than again who knows what the damage is when playing with FOW.

He's bound to bring in reinforcements, I'd still use the carriers, even if only to cover sending in your own reinforcements and/or ferrying AC. I would refrain from using them in combat themselves, flying off squadrons to some Javanese airbase would suffice.

String: CVL Hermes just arrived at Hawaji so these guys are ready to sortie. I don't have much in terms of infantry coming towards Java BUT we have 2 AA units and some fresh lba fighters arriving within days.

He really has landed substantial forces into Java and Sumatra. (Pic shows more details)

US carriers will be on sea next turn... good hunting for these guys I say! [:)]

I have moved my Hurricane fighters on CAP to cover unloading of fresh aircraft.

P40E's and Buffalos are set on escort missions.

There are several 2-4 xAKL's TF heading towards Bataan too. Even one or two of them can make a big diffrence there.

At Bandoeng enemy launched first assaults and achieved 1:1 and 1:2 odds. Time to retreat here towards Batavia. We might not make it though.

The enemy airfield at Den Passar is also closed. Our bombers scortched some 5-15 Oscars on the airfield.

At Palembang he landed significant reinforcements last turn. The CD guns were in action once more...

There were not air to air combat worthy of reporting. Just few minor skirmishes.

IJA infantry units managed to seize Bandoeng. Thankfully our troops did withdraw towards Batavia.

ABDA bombers flew ground bombing missions and managed to score nice hits on IJA 10th division.

The main action was at Palembang. Lets start with good news. The ABDA surface combat TF managed to hammer few transports near Palembang. CL Sumatra was later on sunk by enemy torpedo aircraft...

...it seems that we cannot hold on here for long. Fingers crossed though.

Java (february 21st - 28th 1942)


Japanese have kept advancing in Java. They have now secured additional harbours in central region of the island.

I tried to intervene here but unfortunately his torpedo bombers got best of the allied CAP. The end result was BB Revenge sunk and CA Dorshertshire damaged.

It was well worth the effort and no regrets here.

There were heavy air to air battles above Soerabaja on 24th - 25th. RAF Hurricanes and some US P40E's downed +30 Zero's and some Sallys.

Palembang has also fallen and it seems he is pulling out units immediately. Too bad that we didn't last a bit longer I would have started an ground offensive at Java towards
Semarang / Kadijati region. Now he has +700av worth of infantry freed up so that operation becomes very risky indeed.

In related news CA Kinugasa (damaged in action at DEI) were sunk near Home Islands. Also CL Nagara was sunk near Billiton.

What do you have at Soerabaja, how many forts? Any chance of holding that 10th division off for more than a few turns?

edit: also, do you have any reserves on the way that you can still land at Java?

String: If I remember correctly there 440av worth of units behind level 4 forts at Soerabaja. These guys are Dutch infantry units. I doubt we can hold on too long once the battles start. Somewhat suprised if we do.
 
I have kept ground bombing his divisions and with mediocre results. A couple of "good" hits reported though.
 
At the moment no. There is not that infantry to go around without risking everything. All the "free" british units and oz units are there. I have left enough behind to deal with any intensions towards India though.
 
US troops are now almost deployed so phase 1 is completed. Soon the focus turns into phase 2.
 
I have landed a lot of troops into Java so now they are on their own. Along with nice numbers in fresh fighters.
 
Also, he has nasty amount of Nell's and Betty's in the region which fly out in big numbers. Very hard to slip anything through. Well, it has been this for couple of weeks now.
