A good practice is to, once in a while, use the 'S' key to call up a list of all ships, disable upgrades, then select those under repair, again disable upgrades (the command works only for ships actually displayed on the list at the given time). This helps to catch the ones you might forget to disable from time to time.

Of course enable upgrading on ships when you are ready to undertake them.

After mulligan.

The KB is off Palembang, while elements of the Combined Fleet are in Singapore. Nobody appears to be in the Indian Ocean.

B-17s hit Singapore and A-24s hit Bandjermasin (taking heavy casualties).

I decided to start discouraging the IJN from using ports within air range of my 4E bombers. The B17s got chewed up, but it was worth it.

Little action. A Dutch sub sinks an xAK, while the Japanese damage another. The KB air groups make an appearance near Singapore. The Chinese infiltrate and retake Kaoping.

Japanese shipping appears to have pulled out of Singapore.

Rangoon hit by severe airraids.

KB off Billiton.

A number of Japanese shock attacks, in particular a corps-sized attack at Pegu, are unsuccessful.

February 16/17 1942

The KB sails off Soerabaya and strike Samarinda, where a landing is taking place. Lots of local mice take cover.

For some reason, there are Kaga aircraft operating out of Singapore. I thought it was the Zuiho that I laid an egg on.

Otherwise quiet.

KB launches massive airstrikes on Samarinda, while Kaga's, Soryu's, and Zuiho's fighters operate at Singapore. 4E port strikes on Singapore to discourage its use as a major naval base. Chinese attackers ejected from Pucheng, and Samarinda falls to the Japanese.

February 18/19 1942

Main body of the KB attacks Balikpapan from the Makassar Strait, while the rump continues to operate out of Singapore. Major Japanese corps-level shock attack repulsed with thousands of casualties at Wenchow.

I think you mean the Makassar Strait. Malacca Strait would be out of range.

My opponent is having trouble coping with my submarines--despite the sinking of those based in Manila on 7/8 December. I'm not doing anything special.

He also believes his sub sunk the Enterprise at Noumea--it's in Sydney getting patched up. Fog of war!

The I-20 sneaks into Noumea harbour. There are a half dozen Allied ASW ships operating there, so she immediately finds herself under heavy attack.

The main body of the KB continues to operate south of Balikpapan.

Mostly routine air operations. The KB (in the Makassar Strait) and land aircraft hit Balikpapan. The KB rump operates in the Malacca Strait.

Heavy Japanese airstrikes on Medan and Balikpapan.

Naval bombardment of Medan.

SS I-20 engaged near Noumea, some evidence of damage.

The Japanese player is trying to capture oil resources with a minimum of damage--hence heavy air bombardments by the KB and rump KB.

My opponent is using his battleships, cruisers and carriers to pound the garrisons of the various oil ports. I can't help but wonder if that is the most efficient use of his major ships--it gives me a free hand elsewhere.

Medan falls.

Various Japanese shock attacks in China end up 1-1.

Mostly air actions as the Japanese change their focus to Palembang.

Chinese attack at Hankow repulsed.

Operations continue. A number of Japanese shock attacks between Hankow and Kaifeng.
