Been over 10 years since I played this game. I recently reinstalled it and feel like a total newb, so been updating this thread a bit while I try and regain my bearings.

If people do fid this useful do suggest other threads, aars, links or youtube vids etc people might find useful.

This has been a very useful thread for me, and your effort is much appreciated!

I love WitPAE, WitW (and WitE), and their predecessors, but have struggled to play consistently due to work, but I RETIRED a couple of months ago and am so happy to have time now to sink back in. This thread and the others linked here have been invaluable helping me get back into it.

Great work for a great game - please keep it up!

Or you could just have them set to train a percentage of ASW while you have search missions flown.

But this way they train faster and also give small chance to actually have air ASW attack hitting sub.

Naval Searches can also detect submarines and attack them.

AFAIK, you cannot train different skill than what your unit is set for. E.g. While flying Naval Search, you cannot train ASW by setting training %, you just train NS.

To Train/gain skill in 2 different things simultaneously (NS & ASW), you need to use my method.

You can have the mission as ASW and train ASW but fly naval search.

Good point.

I was worried that having ASW as main mission would cut range to half, but apparently it doesn't.

Good addition, will try that in next game.

There are separate as are mission/patrol but are based on the max range set. But a game quirk always results in a search being carried out one less than the max range. E.g. if you set a Jake to 8 is NavS range is 7 and its ASW range is 3, half rounded down. This does not apply to arcs.
