Operation Athena

Here is the over view of the ops. I have to type up the 'ops order' for this one. Its basically a copy of Erebos, everyone will have pioneers and attachments of assault vehicles. The only change I might make is the start time and 4th Panzer Army being committed. It depends on how well Erebos goes, I might keep them hitting the Russians down south if I can make it over the Ketch straight.

Actually, von Reichenau lasted a few months longer than real-life in your game. This time maybe he wasn't running half-naked in sub-zero weather, which did him in the first time.

How is your unit morale?

5-14-42 Operation Athena Results

My expected 'long' offensive Operation Athena has started....and....ended. One week and some clean up is all that it took. I expected a minimum 3 weeks but not ONE! I guess reinvigorated infantry armies and fresh panzers korps can start Barbarossa all over again [8D] The only problem is that its only in one area so far. I will be making another offensive drive farther north called Operation Pallas. I'll post that later.

As far as unit morale, my mobile forces fall in the 80-94 range, the rebuild armies have a higher morale it appears. They fall in the upper 50's to mid 80's. Worn and damaged units are low, in the high 40's to mid 60's roughly. The Romanians are totally demoralized as a whole force, they are sitting in the low 40's for the most part.

Front Line Trace 5-28-42

Here is the latest front line, I have forgotten Aprils, but it was pretty much a sit fest.

AGS SITREP 5-28-42

I'm afraid this game will soon come to end. My partner has concluded that there really is nothing to fight for and will probably retreat in front of any major offensive. I will continue to play for the sake of possible experimentation and because I enjoy the game. None the less the territory south of Rostov has all been evacuated. I will cautiously move down to the oil centers but there really isn't a chance of holding them if I can't destroy the Big Red Machine.

Here is the cancellation of Operation Pallas that I had planned in early spring. The situation has changed so I will come up with a new offensive for 3rd Panzer Group and the 20+ fresh infantry division I have accumulated.

Why should the game end? Because he is "throwing" it? I don't get it

I don't like to judge other people (or players) on the internets but er, this case is flagrant [X(]

You are starting the summer '42 offensive and he quits? What the f***? What part is ahistorical or wrong here? That's exactly what the Germans did in 1942. The Soviets suffered tremendous losses in the first part of the year: seven armies annihilated.

Not fair, you deserve better [8D]

I can still understand the gut reaction though.. At least congrats for trying to make something out off his running away... The more you see this kind of 42, the more you think that even thought the terrain is shit for panzers, Attacking a place like Moscow where he will feel like he has to defend is probably sounder, since the goal is just to kill some reds.

So did your opponent bail or is this a strategy.

If it is the latter then I can see some advantages, but I dont know if I would run away that far. You definetly won't see that in our game !!

*** edit **** Just bring most of your panzers up to orel kursk area and blow the crap out of the line up there. In the south Chase slowly with whatever infantry rumainians etc that are there and repair the rails. If he gets frisky down there, roll down with some panzers and blast him.

Presumably, he's demoralized by the snow backhand blow. Which, to be fair, is quite preposterous. We've screwed up the post blizzard recovery imo, and the Wehrmacht is doing stuff it really shouldn't be able to. Manstein pulled off this kind of thing a year later, sure, but not after the first blizzard, the Wehrmacht was in no condition to do what it is doing in seemingly every AAR.

I disagree with you on this Flavius, If the germans had pulled significant forces out of the line to rest and didn't expend themselves in the hold at all cost's battles of the winter then I think they should be very capable of launching an attack.

Baelfin, the entire German logistical apparatus collapsed by December of 41. All of it. Pulling some stuff out of the line would mitigate the disaster, but it would take months to straighten out.

Right now, it's like flipping a switch between blizzard and snow. It's ridiculous and binary.

Maybe extending supply difficulties into march would help mitigate it? Maybe its something yoou guys have kicked around in the tester forums I'm not sure. Maybe extend the russian cv boost till the end of march in some form.
You have to admit that the current blizzard iteration is better than it was before.

I should clarify...I believe its going to end soon because it does seem like he's throwing it away. This is his strategy, he's throwing away the oil fields.

He hasn't said he's quitting yet, he just thinks the game mechanics are off.  I can see his point in it all, Flavius is right, things went to far over the other way.  If they could adjust it in the middle it would be much better IMO.  Red doesn't think you should be able to move 2 million men in 2 weeks as the Soviets.  I don't know if that's the case or not [&:]

I'm not giving in either.  I plan on using my 3rd Panzer Army and its 20 infantry divisions to start another assault up north.  I'm going to use 4th Panzer Army and the Romanian's to roll down south.  If he doesn't want the oilfields then I'll take them.  I hope it turns into a mobile battlefield down there like in the desert war [:'(], but his numbers would add up quickly in that case, but it would be fun.

So the meagre logistic assets available in March would have been used to power up an offensive instead of replenishing the rest of the front? I doubt that the German general staff would have made that call. Many of the draft animals were dead/eaten. In the game they are trucks so not suitable for consumption.
