How is the lack of building costs for german units reflected? Did you use my duration-method?

I took no special action - and am not familiar with your suggestion (or possibly I forgot it if made long ago). Tell me about it.

I do not regard it as a problem - the bigger ships start the game = no building cost.

Only one small raider appears after game start - otherwise purely submarines - and not even big submarines by Japanese standards (although,
to be sure, they are pretty big by German ones - most are Type IXs). The cost of less than 20 medium size and small (type VIIF I think) subs isn't a big strain on the economy of Japan.

give them durability of 1 to reflect the (almost) 0 building cost and let it upgrade to its real dur afterwards.

Oh yes - I remember - and I did that in WITP RHS too. I did it in AE re Thai ships for a while - and maybe I will go back to it. For the moment I am experimenting with having them appear at start = no cost - but damaged - and need time to repair. My problem was they were never building at all - but I think that is now solved by other changes and need not be a consideration any more. It was a really good idea - but I forgot it.

This is a general commentary about how RHS differs from stock and all
other mods on Luzon, and why? And the implications for strategy.

In this thread, RHS Test 4B, Big Red is withdrawing toward Bataan, in a
classic War Plan Orange move. It was abandoned by Mac in the 1930s,
but later re-adopted (with fewer supplies than had it been the plan all along)
when the Philippine Army failed to be able to contain IJA units.

It differs from that of Gen Yamashita, IJA's only great captain IMHO,
who based his defense on an area farther North, malaria free, and resource
rich (in particular, food producing, but also minerals). "The center four
squares of the chessboard" in SE Asia are Clark AFB, Manila, Bataan and Baguio
City. For some reason, no form of WITP has ever included Baguio - except
for RHS mods. It is inland, not a port, but an airfield. It is malaria free.
It has both resources and light industry - and some direct supply generation
as well. AND it is mountainous - far tougher to win a fight in than other places.

The first time I took a bus up the Naguilian Road (used by the IJA in 1942 and
the US/Philippine Army in 1944), and saw the canyons, swift rivers, and the
great sweeping reverse arc entrance to the city (the road goes in a circle,
hanging on a sheer cliff, almost 3/4 of the way around, so an enemy can shoot
at you the whole way) - I declared "MacArthur was a fool!" This is defensable
country!

Now you may well ask - what about Manila Bay? One thing alone is enough to keep
it closed for longer than IRL. Fort Drum. When Gen Waynewright surrendered,
the CO of Fort Drum gathered his officers. They had no meaningful damage - never
mind fully 26 feet of concrete had been planed off by explosives. Every system was
operational. But they had no more food! So they surrendered. IF the fort had more
food, they would have held the bay closed even longer.

US and Philippine forces on Bataan suffered terribly. 100% had both malaria and denge
fever. There was not enough food - so malnutrition was almost universal. Contrast that
with Baguio - a place without mosquitos. But lots of food. And far better defensive
terrain. There is a possibility of holding out for a very long time.

Note that in RHS the Allies have transport planes - and can fly to Baguio - a developed
airfield (and location of the future Philippine Military academy, under construction: classes
are for the time being held at Teacher Camp, which later was used as the POW camp for
US citizens by the Japanese). I suppose I should put in the garrison of Fort John Hay -
the Marine Legation in China has survived in this test - and it is much smaller.

I did promise to see what could be done about HMS Canberra when she raided Kavieng.
Here you go. Unfortunately Adelade was no longer with her.

Note that in RHS the Allies have transport planes - and can fly to Baguio - a developed
airfield (and location of the future Philippine Military academy, under construction: classes
are for the time being held at Teacher Camp, which later was used as the POW camp for
US citizens by the Japanese). I suppose I should put in the garrison of Fort John Hay -
the Marine Legation in China has survived in this test - and it is much smaller.

Not sure I can fly enough troops to Baguio before the Japs arrive in force, along w/ other reasons not to commit.

I did promise to see what could be done about HMS Canberra when she raided Kavieng.

41-12-15: Sid was talking about the big chinese sub base at Wuhan. So I decided to send s-39 to Wuhan to "test the waters". Boat was doing ok until it ran into a minefield. S39 has hit 3 ships in 2 days.

I thought my Chinese corp north of Hong Kong would have "easy pickings" w/ that Jap machine gun Bat. Now it seems ElCID is determined t destroy the unit in the open w/ Betty air.

Commander TF Relief Pearl thought the KB would have vacated the area by now. KB keeps hanging around. This was an embarrassing surprise and could easily have been prevented. I will need to slow the pace of the game.

Actually, first of all, it was preventive - to reduce the corps strength in case it attacked

second, I am a combined arms theorist, so if available I believe in weakening the strength and morale
and supplies of a unit by softening it up with air strikes before the coup de grace

As a person who improperly got trained for infantry combat (technicians are not supposed to be so assigned
in the Navy - but my first captain wanted "a radioman who was a technician, so he can fix the radio" - which
is nonsense sans part, test gear and power to run it - and my second had a green crew and needed veterans)
I also believe it is the infantry that is the real queen of battle. So I intend to wipe it out with infantry.
Which is en route. I did say the corps should run to better defensive ground. I never bluff.

I do not send submarines up rivers as a rule - as submerging is a problem IRL

FYI in RHS we have a number of German units - many from an unpublished mod by Mifune - otherwise imported from WITP RHS. These include die Erste Monsons submarines, raiders, tenders (one of which was sunk in this game already by a US submarine), and rather efficient transports (useful for moving "ores" - resources - from the mainland to Japan. A few units start on the map in Japan and Manchukuo. The rest appear in the SW map corner at a tiny island which is not developable - and should not be developed by either side nor captured by the Allies. This island - a dot location without art - is almost invisible and NOT a supply source nor a developed base in any sense. It is a point for Axis units to appear - period. But it is real! It is Amsterdam Island, a volano with no suitable place for a port or airfield - and the only attempt to do something there economically (raise cattle) failed.

I do not regard it as a problem - the bigger ships start the game = no building cost.

Only one small raider appears after game start - otherwise purely submarines - and not even big submarines by Japanese standards (although,
to be sure, they are pretty big by German ones - most are Type IXs). The cost of less than 20 medium size and small (type VIIF I think) subs isn't a big strain on the economy of Japan.

Oh yes - I remember - and I did that in WITP RHS too. I did it in AE re Thai ships for a while - and maybe I will go back to it. For the moment I am experimenting with having them appear at start = no cost - but damaged - and need time to repair. My problem was they were never building at all - but I think that is now solved by other changes and need not be a consideration any more. It was a really good idea - but I forgot it.

On reflection - this idea is unsuitable for the Germans. They enter at the SW corner, and must transit the entire Indian Ocean and the Malay barrier before getting somewhere they could convert to a form with higher durability. They need their durability to survive. So while it works with Thai units, I won't use it with the German ones.

At first there are no subs in range.

And Japan has almost no escort to put with anything - what there is being initially assigned to
invasion groups or heavy naval forces.

Then too - in WITP escort does not do much good. Doubly so Japanese escorts -
they are merely targets for the submarines -
