Liuchow is at the "corner" of the ROC RR system - the place where it makes a sharp turn
from Southward to Northwestward - and also the junction of the future connection to the
RR from Indochina to Nanning. Tunkwang is near Sian - the most important city in the
Northern Yellow River basin - and the key to the approaches to the city. Its two RR are
necessary for any army sized force to be able to conduct combat operations in Sian itself.
In spite of these setbacks, a general ROC retreat from Changsha South all the way to Liuchow
has generally succeeded in getting away clean, and is probably going to be able to pick
its ground on which to stand and fight.

The most significant event of the day was the capture of the
last hex of the main Chinese rail line. This involved a
reinforced semi-motorized Class B division ejecting an often
defeated group of five units and most of the air strikes of the
day. Otherwise, air strikes harassed an isolated Gurkha brigade
in Bengal & Assam, and numbers of ASW vessels and ASW patrol planes
harassed enemy submarines on both sides. One sub on each side
managed to put one fish into an enemy AK. In Java, China and India
Japanese troops are moving to contact. There have been reports for
days of Japanese carrier planes around the Java Sea, and today a firm
contact with two enemy carriers at Kendari. It appears a carrier
or two have left Singapore every day for the last four days and mostly
streamed SE from there to Kendari. Other contacts imply transports
may be picking up troops at Darwin and at Horn Island - possibly replacing
assault units with garrison troops - with a view toward reinforcing
an assault force - likely by 14th Army - of Australia's SE and/or the
South Pacific SLOC. 14th Army has been free for some time except for
65th Brigade, cleaning up isolated garrisons.
