.....here's why I inform my (three) readers that having put the Yorktown and Saratoga in for refit after their tour to gain Exp.. The CV fleet is just NE of Plamyra...... and a IJN CVL is at Canton... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Oh yeah! 8 bombs on Zuikaku and an ammo storage explosion on Soryu - I think both of them are toast [after the appropriate amount of extreme heat from their fires, of course]. Even if Enterprise goes down, it is a good trade off. I am impressed at how well the US CAP performed.

Couple things:
1. Can readers please tell me how I can improve the AAR to encourage more responses?

2. Doggie/BB: I think I hurt the Soryu but as it wasn't heavily damaged in the afternoon after the single hit ammo explosion in the morning i'm thinking fires/light/moderate damage like Enterprise has. Unfortunately three bombs on the Zuikaku did zero damage as they hit the side of the ship and bounced off. Another bomb or two hit tower/guns and didn't penetrate.

My CAP set-up was - I think - like this:
One Carrier's F4F-3A's: 20,000 feet. 60or70 CAP, 20 rest
Other Carrier's F4F-3's: 12,000 feet 30CAP/20 rest
The Marine Buffalos: also at 12K, but at 30CAP20rest so they would accompany attacks

I loaded up the carrier with the extra marines to train them.. not realizing should carriers get damaged I'd lose even more planes as available space gets reduced.

You have had 2700+ hits, so there are a few readers who are not posting.
If you want advice on a specific game issue like pilot training or how to set up your Air Combat TFs, etc., you have to ask. Many will not remember that you solicited input in your opening posts, and there are a lot of areas to comment on, so you have to be specific.

Posting maps helps a great deal, annotated if possible. The tactical situation cannot be assessed without scanning the land/sea/air scape. If you are unsure how to capture maps and annotate them, check out witpqs' AAR and search for the programs "Greenshot" [screen capture] and "Paint.NET" [picture manipulation and annotation].

The lack of responses in this my first time ever playing and trying to be funny (obviously a big failure) plus my mistakes costing me things in the game I let disappointment take hold and let this game fade into the background.

I was wondering if the viewers at large found an AAR by a newbie playing the computer extremely boring? If necessary, I'll try to find someone to play this rank newbie in a game for a PvP but getting people to play a rank newbie might be a mite difficult but I will try that if that is what it takes as I know there is a serious learning curve. Never playing any games of this maker or complexity means I will learn a damn sight better posting my experiment's returns than trying to go solo on deciphering what I concocted in the test tube of the pacific.

To be blunt - I cheated. To figure out how to save a burning ship I used save and reload as my initial thought had the opposite effect. Palmyra is the nearest island. I hurried ARs and AGs there.
a) Keep fleet together. Stop at nearest Island - Palmyra, have an AR and AG join each wounded carrier TFs. Other ships in TFs use their firefighting capabilities to help smother flames. Enterprise crispy critter several times.
FAIL
b) FULL speed ARs to Enterprise TFt so it is with the fleet when fleet stops at Palmyra. Enterprise crispy critter several times.
FAIL
c) Same as above except next day after TFs arrive disband fleets. Enterprise crispy critter several times
FAIL
d) Same as above except keep Yorktown intact and do not disband, and just have the smaller Enterprise escort TF disband upon arrival so AR disband with it.
ONLY option that reduced fires. All other repeated strategies did nothing to the fires...

Northern China:

With the successful defenses of Sinyang and Chengchow gave breathng room and the ability to counter-attack if I could isolate weaker positions in the enemy lines.
Near Sinyang: Headed SW to mop-up attakers who retreated from Sinyang
Near Kaoping (ORANGE) - took eastern shore and defeated units at Kaopeng - until IJA forces reinforced their line.

Also, back after Taiyuan fell (GREEN) all the forces nearby retreated NW to Yenan... except never enough supplies made it so I then divided my forces:
2 NF forces would remain at Yenan, small number would continue to retreat to Sian. (Blue)

6th Army Group under Yang instead flanked the enemy and began a race taking the cities along the route to Tientin (Purple) IJA forces would retake areas after I moved on. Yang overran the defenders at Tientin and in in control of the City and its ability to create supplies.

Southern China

CHI forces hold Hanoi (394 AV) and Haiphong (96 AV)in French Indochina. Another INF force is coming from the north after much back and forth rebuilding units.
(279 AV) INF unit headed south to eliminate the retreated base defenders of Hanoi.

Wuchow still holds strong. Using CHI bombers to fly in supplies has helped a lot as well as splintering off 1 Corp to patrol the western side of the river (which caused a IJA corp to come across and fight it after a river crossing)

As Wuchow holds, and Kukong is not seen as a "must-hold", I sent 3 CHI INF corp and a Base Force ENG unit to Canton to get in behind the IJA forces engaged at Wuchow. Canton has 10,000 defenders . I attack with 9800 INF/623 AV

In any event, the magical coast road is not yet operational.

The desperate struggle at JAVA

After concerted attempts at landing troops at the heavily defended (with Coastal guns) ports of Kalidjati and Semarang.. the IJN now is concentrating its landings in the north.

The mixed Dutch and US surface naval TF had to eventully retreat from Java due to unopposed enemy air raids.

There remain 12 Allied subs guarding Batavia in the North
..and 5 allied subs in the south near Soerabaja. Two sub transport TFs are soon to be out of a job as they were supplying desperate allied defenders at Zamboanga and Cebu in the PIs.

To figure out how to save a burning ship...

hi u_s,

heavily-damaged ships are v. difficult to save, though one must always make the attempt! if the ship is still on fire at the end of the turn, it's likely a write-off. There's little you can do to aid a burning ship, even if it's disbanded in a port - all fires must be out before repair can begin. If a burning ship reaches port, you can improve its captain to aid damage-control, but the new captain's skills won't help port-repairs once the fires are extinguished.

it's important to have a crew w/ high accumulated experience, & a captain w/ high Naval skill (affects damage control capability). Of course, the best time to improve your CV's captain is before the ship goes into combat.

Often times after combat, the game-engine will auto-create an EscortTF from your original TF, w/ 1 or 2 escorts. The presence of escorts in this TF improves the chances of the damaged ship's captain surviving its (usually inevitable) sinking. You must immediately alter this TF's speed to Cruise, and head for the nearest port. In extremis, you could also give this TF a Destination = current hex & Do Not Retire orders, hoping to avoid additional travel-damage. Where should this TF go? Depending on its damage level, you might want to try for the nearest base-hex, & disband there.

A well-established forward base can provide succor - but full-speeding AR/AG to merge w/ a crippleTF won't help. IIRC, an AR must be undamaged & disbanded in a port, to be effective. Even so, it can't repair Major damage >5 points.

It is early May and I am very conflicted on what to do:

First of all, I lost the Enterprise. It made it to Palmyra with 20+ fires and ended with 70 RED system damage (not repairable)and 39 flooding and misc engine damage. I brought the flooding down to only major flooding which was <10. I disbanded her at Palmyra and brought in AR and AG ships to give port more repair "points". For some reason the RED system damage was not repairable. After putting out all fires, repairing all non major damage I tried to sail her to San Diego. She lasted two days. Got x5 "major flooding messages".

Yorktown and Saratoga and are in SD and La respectively repairing damage received by the enemy as well as their upgrades. Hornet and Lexington are circling between WC and HI training.

I am itching to do <something> with the British fleet before I lose ships to forced withdrawal. Late April The IJ forces attempted landing at Rangoon (which they are already attacking) and at Port Blair. I tried to sortie my surface forces to ambush their forces but ended up sinking a few measly xakls at Port Blair in exchange for losing 1 CA and 3 CLs from Nells dropping guided torpedoes.

The CV TF went south a bit and did jump a mix xAK and xAP with escorts going somewhere.

as of the 10th of May:
Rangoon still holds. I am so very tempted to send them reinforcements but the moment I try I know I'll be under heavy torpedo bomber attack as well as IJA troops sitting at Pegu will finally get into the fight.

JAVA holds. Fighting continues at Batavia. Dutch and Allied forces hold edge. IJA Armor and IJA recon regiments annihilated SW of Batavia whereas Merak fell again to large numbers if IJA forces.
Allied subs have taken a beating from air attacks but some Dutch recon squadrons have been sent on Naval Attack duties and outfitted with best bomber pilots and have scored quite a few hits on transports.

CHINA:
Tientsin taken mid April. Fell early May to massive IJA forces (70K vs. 15K). Forces retreating SW.
Attackers repulsed at Wuchow. Allied Air forces did excellent work over the skies of Wuchow. Enemy forces retreated SE between Wuvhow and Conton.
Canton taken. Forces from Kukong sped SW as Wuchow was holding and took Canton in a sneak attack. IJS forces are now in two parts - units between friedly held Kukong and Wuchow and Canton defenders who retreated SE.
Scattered fighting around Sinyang as I am trying to mop up wounded IJA units that were involved in the siege of Sinyang.

I am reinforcing the aleutians as well as putting stronger AV forces at Luganville and Noumea. Intel reports IJ forces planning attacks on both. Americal division being sent piecemeal Pago Pago.

Am completely at a loss Strategically. I was expecting to be in counter mode trying to adapt and react to IJ advances but it has been quiet in the South Pacific and China, Java, and Rangoon have been the meatgrinder.

.....here's why I inform my (three) readers that having put the Yorktown and Saratoga in for refit after their tour to gain Exp.. I decided to do the same for the Enterprise and yorktown.. sail them around.. if a target of opportunity presents itself.. great.. otherwise sail around and gain experience. The CV fleet is just NE of Plamyra...... and a IJN CVL is at Canton... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

This is the same thing I do, I keep the Carriers at sea in Spots to counter attack and training at all times until I max the XP levels for day and night. After the XP levels are max they might sit in a small port but forward deployed ready to respond should I be able to confirm the Location of the KB or Min-KB.
