Hi LST,

At Abadan, I'm actually pretty overstocked with tankers, having more than I can really load at a time, so this event won't really hurt me as far as keeping India full. This group was making the long trip to Perth, to help at that end. I'll probably be stopping these trips, relying on Cape Town and the US for Australia.

He's definitely taking his time with the SRA, not having Palembang or any of south Borneo yet. I would think fuel will be an issue for him soon.

My invasions are moving slower than I would like, having relatively few assault transports. It'll be at least a year before I can do these more properly. As it is, I won't go past the Marshalls until the second half of 1943. I may deal with the Gilberts before then, however. I am going to reinforce Noumea once I wrap things up here. People movers are at a premium here.

Anyone know in the real war, where our invaders staged from when we took the Marianas? I can't seem to find that info. I've a feeling they came from Pearl, but am not sure. The Marshalls aren't a good place to work out of, due to stacking limits. As it is, I'll be pulling the divisions out when I'm done, leaving a regiment behind. I attacked each with at least one division and one regiment, with combat engineers and artillery attached. Some armor too.

I may deal with the Gilberts and Solomons next. Not sure how badly I want to push into the latter, because if/when the Marianas fall, everything from Truk on south becomes hobbled.

Checked Morrison - there was some shuffling of troops at Eniwetok between transports from PH and LSTs sent ahead to rendezvous at Eniwetok.

The turn opens near Ceylon. The big surface force I was sending near Sabang was sent back to Colombo. I was about a dozen hexes away, so I put them at full speed, which would get them back in a turn. I ran into his cruisers about 3 hexes south of the island. Of course, my "T" got crossed and i started taking hits, but I dished some back. Dorsetshire was a shell magnet. The one shell that hit Maya did penetrate.

In the Marshalls, I've achieved all my objectives. Eniwetok falls immediately and I finally take Kwajalein. I'll eventually deal with Ponape, Wotje and Maloelap. They can starve before that happens.

I think my higher casualties at Kwajalein were due to those forces not being fully prepped like the other two. Losses at Eniwetok and Roi-Namur were pretty low, plus it helped that there wasn't much defending them. I realized I have no real base forces enroute to Kwajalein, so they're loading up at Pearl now with some recently arrived transports. I'm also starting to home port subs in the area to there. Tankers with fuel are also enroute. Overall, it's going pretty smoothly, but the troops are still slow to unload. I have to wait for that before loading them back up again. Planes should be unloading at Roi pretty soon.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with how this went. I'm not sure if KB will wind up raiding at some point, but I want to pack these bases with airplanes before that can happen.

Mini-KB is still 3 hexes off Milne. My troops are 6 miles on the way out.

I'm transferring about 40 transports from San Francisco to Pearl, since I have like 190 there now. I need extra ships to feed my new forward bases.

The pic below shows hit stuff near Ceylon. Looks like an invasion, but I'm not fully sure if they're hitting Ceylon or rounding the corner to India proper. I definitely hope it's not the latter.

Forgot to mention. My transport convoy that got hit at Colombo is already 3 hexes from Cochin, so they're safe.

08 May 1942

More stuff.

Lots of Japanese ships, are unloading at Koggala, on Ceylon. Nobody's based there to resist. This campaign won't last long. I've moved my squadrons on-island off to India. Both of us seemed to have big plans at the same time, I think.

Illustrious arrives at Cape Town, so she's off to Pearl

I have several B-17 squadrons arriving over the next couple weeks or so. I'm going to attach them to 10 AF and route them to India. If he starts packing ships in at Colombo, I'm going to make him pay. I'll pull my Wellingtons in within range, too.

I'm having issues unloading planes at Roi-Namur. The port's too little so I can't get them ashore. I'm moving that group to Eniwetok to unload them there (Port size 3) and fly most of them over. The main invasion groups are still slow to unload, so I'm delayed before I get them back on board and back to Pearl. I've sent the minesweeping groups back, as they've had nothing to do. I want to get my ships cleared out ASAP. Keep in mind, I've got nine USMC squadrons on board my carriers, which will also transfer over as I depart. I want lots of mutually covered bases running here. Eventually, I'll add more bases here to the mix.

I'm still encountering subs in the Marshalls, including several mini-subs. I've moved my ASW groups over to deal with them. I'll probably start basing lots of small subchasers over there if he continues to keep this up.

Overall, I like how this game is going. Neither one of us has a big advantage over the other right now, and we're both being pretty cautious. Usually, I'm getting smoked by now.

09 May 1942

Landings at Hood Point, 2 hexes SSE of Port Moresby. I had my planes set to attack up to 3 hexes out, but they didn't fly today. I could have nipped this quickly. I do have over 1,000 AV at PM, so he can't just waltz in.

IJA takes San Jose, on Panay. He should have the rest of the Philippines wrapped up within a few weeks.

I'm still (un)loading troops in the Marshalls. Probably be a week until I can finally get everyone out. I doubt anything beyond subs will challenge me here. Carriers a couple hexes S of Eniwetok topped off their fuel with the oilers. Little gunboats and such have encountered his subs, but failed to really find them.

10 May 1942

Steve's cruisers venture north and smack my convoy unloading at Port Moresby, killing everything. I should have seen that coming. Having looked at the map and realizing the Marshalls aren't really that far from New Guinea, I'm sending my carriers down to deal with his navy hanging out near Milne Bay. I have 7 carriers overloaded with fighters, so I should be okay against some light carriers. Hopefully, he doesn't see me on the way. Hood Point falls, but he didn't use much to take it.

My air hits his forces sitting at PM and gets some hits back.

Surface forces off Colombo ambush my forces trying to get away. CL Gambia on her own puts up a very good fight before succumbing. The rest of mine were a combo of minesweepers and support ships. Many got away, though it hurt to lose the AS.

12 May 1942

Everyone's still unloading in the Marshalls. I'm guessing about 3 days until they're done. I've flown in PBYs to each of my three new islands. The ones at Eniwetok can reach past Truk, which will be useful. One squadron of SBD, one of A-20s and two of P-39s are now ashore at Eniwetok. All except the Dauntlesses are up and flying. When my carriers return, I can beef up the air even more. Still 3 days or so until I reach New Guinea. His light carriers are still lurking off there. I'm off to a slow start, as I refueled from the AOs before departing.

In Australia, I'm moving base troops up to Portland Roads, where that will be a very useful base -- especially if he makes inroads in New Guinea.

I've transferred the 307th Bomb Group to the 10th USAAF and they're enroute to East US and from there to Cape Town. They've got Fortresses and Liberators. I want to start stockpiling them in India soon to make life at Colombo difficult for him.

15 May 1942

Ships are getting my troops in the Marshalls loaded up. Should only be a few day. I'm sending more transports from Pearl over to get any leftover fragments. Some got split between the islands, so I'm not sure how that happened. In a day or two, my Marine air should be flying off to Roi-Namur. Eniwetok is fairly fulled up with aircraft, as it is. A few subs departed Kwajalein, as they had full tanks. Nautilus to Truk and two more to Japan. I have another 4 there which are stuck until fuel arrives. A floating drydock and other support vessels are also inbound. He had one mini-sub take a shot this turn. It's probably out of torps by now, so I'm sending my ASW groups back to Pearl.

Bunches of ships are showing up off Tarakan, so I'm guessing a landing is imminent.

Troops are loading up in the US for Pearl. Once I get all my transports back from the Marshalls, I'll be sending large groups out to Pago Pago and Noumea. Maybe also fill out the other bases around Noumea. Maybe I can deal with Guadalcanal at some point in the near future. Not sure if I wan't to get involved in a big mud wrestling match up the Solomons.

16 May 1942

Forgot to mention about my carriers. They got sighted as they approached Guadalcanal and his ship scattered like pigeons. At least it's quiet near Port Moresby now. I moved some O-47s up to keep tabs on the troops he landed a few hexes away.

My carriers are near the Marshalls now. I've offloaded most of the Marines, putting 3 F4F and 3 SBD squadrons on Roi-Namur. Lex and Sara each had a squadron of Buffalos, but both squadrons decided to put planes on long term maintenance, being out of action for 2 weeks or more, so I kept them aboard. No great loss, I figure.

By the time the carriers reach Pearl, I should be able to flip one VT squadron over to Avengers.

In the Marshalls, two convoys are loaded up and returning to Pearl. The last should be done in a day or two. I'll clean up any fragments after that. Fuel should reach Kwajalein in about 3.5 days. It will be a handy base for my S boats, so they can cover Truk from there.

Speaking of subs, one nails a transport near Tarakan.

Most of my convoys have departed the Marshalls. One left at Roi-Namur, going slowly, as motorized support is always the slowest to (dis)embark. I've got minelayers visiting Eniwetok and Kwajalein. Mine tenders are also rebasing to both bases to preserve the laid mines.

Price of Wales leaves the shipyard at Pearl, leaving room for me to put both old USN battleships in Drydock. Once they both can make better than 2 knots, I'll ship them stateside. Too many subs hanging around Pearl for me to try that now.

A big convoy with planes is leaving the states. More PBYs for Pearl as well as some recon Lightnings. Didn't check yet, but I'll see if they can reach Truk from Eniwetok. USAAF Lockheed twins are also enroute.

Out east, I have a continuous string of ships stretching from the Marshalls to Pearl, heading back. The first convoy is back, unloading troops. Once troop transports arrive, I'm getting a big group of two or three divisions, plus support troops out to Noumea. I want to beef up Fiji and Samoa also. Even with the Marshalls adventure, I still have lots of troops sitting at Pearl. Maybe I could entertain taking Milne Bay back, as he doesn't have the naval air available to defend it.

USMC dive bombers from Port Moresby relocated back to Townsville to re-equip. One had dash-1 Dauntlesses, while the other had the ancient SBC Helldivers. Both are getting dash 3 SBDs.

Otherwise the usual air bombardments, mostly in China.

My first invasion convoy unloaded at Pearl and is dispersed. The two British battleships which got hit by the shore batteries will take 15-25 days at pierside. Not enough room to drydock them.

Fuel's unloading at Kwajalein, so I've got some subs sent out from there. S boats are covering the entry to Truk. Support ships should arrive in a turn or two. Another day or two after that for the big drydock (20,000 tons) to arrive.

I'd love to move on past the Marshalls, but with the shipping I have, there's no way I could comfortably pull that off. I need to wait for all the good assault transports to arrive. If I can grab the Marianas in 1943, I'll be doing well.

Colombo falls...quickly.

In the Marshalls, it looks like I accidently shipped some unit back to Pearl by mistake. I'll have to fix that issue. Ships are still streaming in there.

Otherwise fairly quiet. No real assault at Palembang yet.

More like a shipping mess-up on my end. I've been pulling more groups out than I anticipated, due to the stingy stacking limits on these islands (6,000).

My ASs, AEs and such reach Kwajalein, so I can fully support subs there. The floating drydock should reach next turn. I've already got a cloud of S-boats at or approaching Truk.

My carriers will reach Pearl next turn. All's going good there.

O-47s are checking Milne Bay. Looks like mainly fighters there.

Palembang falls rather quickly. He's finally got a big fuel source. The port size there will chokepoint things a bit. Troops land at Benkoelen, on the other side of the island opposite of Palembang.

As slow has he's going in the DEI, I'm debating about packing Timor with troops in an effort to keep it. Worthwhile idea?

Slow activity on Ceylon. Trincomalee will be a tougher nut to crack for him, as the 34th Indian Division lives there.

Supply overall in India has gotten down, which has become a drag, as it means keeping Rangoon supplied is a bit tougher. A replenishment convoy just arrived at Cape Town, so I've got another convoy loading up. It's carrying 60k in supply and another 60k convoy is already enroute. I'm shipping what I can from Abadan also. HI not making supply in this scenario is getting painful at this point.

My carriers arrive back at Pearl. Lexington's VT squadron has flipped to Avengers and Saratoga's has 10/15. They'll be a bit more formidable next time. I'm thinking of sending some B-17s over to Eniwetok, as they've just the range to reach Truk, but they're a bit heavy on air there as it is. My PBYs can reach Truk and I've seen zero activity going on around there since I've been up. My floating drydock has reached Kwajalein, so it's a real base now. Dive bombers at Roi-Namur are visiting Wotje next turn, so see it it's occupied. I may do the same with Jaluit. Follow-up invasions may be necessary.

I'd have loved to be a fly on the wall in Steve's AAR when I landed there. We've both been pretty mum on our emails to each other, so I'm not sure what he's thinking about it right now.
