I think the typical kill range for WW2 a to a is something like 400m or less. But again it depends on the gun. The 30mms had to close to something like 150m to have a decent chance of hitting even a B-17; the 20mms were somewhat better.
Sorry I do not recall the issue off hand. I'll remember to look it up for you; it's just a matter of pulling the thing off my shelf. I remember the article pretty well because I was thinking specifically about the round that I'd need to hunt elk. The answer came up .30-06. There may be a similar comparison available on one of the "articles" posted on Chuck Hawks' web site (www.chuckhawks.com).
I'm new to hunting out west. All my previous exp was in Maine. Given the undulating terrain and the piles of tops everywhere, a very long shot even in a cutting was around 250 yards.
