Good bombardments again. Now the hunt will be on to see if subs can continue pursuit of Zuikaku. Are there other wounded in this TF too? Hard to tell stuffed with merchants. I've got 5 subs closely that will all blockade Hong Kong and approaches to Formosa until more help arrives.

The Japanese use a division to take almost undefended Subic Bay. Will they now move in and really start at Clark?

A total of 27 Sally and 2 Anns shot down on the day without a loss. That improves these pilots a bit!

This post should bring the AAR current. I haven't had a turn back in the past day. Lowpe hasn't logged on to the forum either, so he may just be busy, but he was going at 1-2 turns a day recently. The reason this may be significant is that I went for it a bit last turn. I'll explain more in a bit. [;)]

Growler got in for a shot at the KB, but still coundlt get past the escorts. He is persistently keeping them at Miri though. The more intel I get the more worried I am. The KB is showing 143 fighters and 275 bombers now, even without Zuikaku.

The IJN sent a big TF of CA/CL and 8 DD toward Mersing and took out a decent ASW TF I hd there. Not only did he hit them in the night, but the TF must have been on a more aggressive setting than he usually uses, because they stuck around for the morning and sunk two more ships. I messed up my ASW settings, obviously, since those ships had too high a tolerance as well.

Bombardments showed a strong IJA presence at Kluong, and I won't be getting into that until the IJA supply there runs low. At Taiping, however, we got a slightly positive result, and have a significant troop numerical and quality advantage for the moment. This opened up what I'll be trying during the current turn I sent yesterday. I'll outline it with a map in the next post.

I like the P-400 in the early war. That 20mm cannon is so much better than the inaccurate 37mm of the P-39D.

These are the guys in this group after the turn. Some new aces!

(One side note about some of the early war Allied pilots is the low defensive skill. I've been rotating strafe training to get the 50exp/50air/50def pilots better, then flying them in rear CAP to bring exp up).

The was the first bombardment at Kluong. It shows some big units from the Singers siege set up in a good defensive hex, most likely with decent forts built. Since my units now have 2 forts each, working on 3, I'll shift the 18th British around now to aim at Mersing through the jungle. A long walk, but quicker than prepping a landing. I also have a few smaller units prepping for a coastal invasion there. I feel comfortable doing this as Kluong is a 55k max hex, so bringing another division in would be counter-productive for the IJA.

Altogether it should be enough to take Mersing within a month, barring further buildup there. It's only showing 5k troops now.

The bulk of the other units from Singers, including some beat up divisions, are getting a continuing pounding from the Allied naval bombardments. Many support and guns are being destroyed now, not just disabled. My two divisions prepping for Johore are at 60+ now and should reach full prep in 3 weeks or so. It looks like a well coordinated attack on both Johore and Mersing could happen within a month. Barring a big (and risky) move in by the KB and a lot of surface IJN support, it will be next to impossible to save these six divisions and other troops.

After the bombardment I was considering how to get the navy involved in the scheduled DA on Taiping. This led to a complicated and risky plan to suppress Japanese air power, allowing two sets of USN cruisers to bombard the base by day! [X(]

The big IJN TF that took out the ASW TF on the 21st was seen moving quickly toward Cam Ran Bay after it's action. It will be well out of range for the next day, and I can't see any other surface forces in the area. There has been a BB force nearby, and it could be at Kota Bharu, but the base has a 6/10 DL and no TFs are shown there, and search didn't pick anything up. Hopefully it's moved on.

I've set seven surface TFs to bombard the bases holding the majority of the Japanese air force on Malaya (I think) and hopefully negate them at least for the next turn. Two RN cruiser TFs will aim to hit Kota Bharu, a 10 hex run, so flank speed and a daylight bombardment. This base lists 100 bombers and 65 fighters. The most risky of the bombardments of the day.

Two USN cruiser TFs will aim to hit Taiping in a 10 hex daylight bombardment as well. This one is closer to air support though, and less susceptible to IJN interception. Another two cruiser TFs will aim to hit Kuantan with DMS hopefully sweeping the base first, and the RN R class BBs will hit afterward, also in the daylight. There are 80+ fighters and 25 bombers listed at this base.

The RN CVs will hang out near Palembang to support if the KB runs NW, but most likely will stay in the shadows.

This op leaves a lot of ships hanging out in direct and easy range of Japanese bombers, but 200 of those were in China 2-3 turns ago, and I've set 300 fighters to LR CAP cover both the TFs and the bases they'll hit. The 60+ 4Es available will also aim for the bigger bomber base at Kota Bharu, and the P-38s will LR CAP there from 4 hexes, so very close. I'm nervous and excited to see what happens!

The circle bases show where the Allied fighters will LR CAP from.

That does seem like a bold and exciting move. I take it the two TFs going 10 hexes have "remain on station" set? Otherwise, they will not bombard during the day and will just move to a starting position for a night bombardment the turn after.

Here's hoping KB or Mini-KB is not lurking 8 hexes from Kota Bharu (hey, that's KB too!).

It's a tense beginning, as multiple ships, including the DMS set to sweep them, hit mines at Kuantan. Some are swept though, paving the way for future runs. I notice there is also CD gun return fire, and the notes say it's the Wake CD gun unit, one of the best in game!! [X(]

I sent three B-27D at Max altitude to Miri to see is the KB was still there, and what it's CAP settings are currently. Lost one to ops, but the CAP couldn't do much to get up where it was operating, at plus 28k. [:)]

The DA at Taiping went well, getting a 1:1 and lowering forts from 3 to 2. I'll keep going tomorrow.

He's been airlifting the 21st division in, and their AV went from 21 yesterday to 36 today. I added a Marine tank Bn of 46 AV though (which didn't take part today), and another Aussie brigade is a day out.

This was a good turn, at least if all the TFs survive tomorrow and get back to Singers.

The BBs hit by mines have minimal damage. Only DD Stuart is in trouble, but still could make it to Singers, which is 4 hexes away.

The number of Japanese planes lost brings the total losses to nearly even. I won't try another bombing run tomorrow though. I want to see what he does after this. If the KB moves it'll find subs 3-4 hexes deep in all directions, and a lot of them have working fish. I set them all at least 4 hexes from Miri to be out of SW range, or at least what he has been flying. He has no detection on subs past 3 hexes from the KB.
