Is it true that each of the figures was modeled on an actual person?
I don't think that's the case. The officers were taller, better built and intentionally modelled to appear 'wiser' than the leg infantry riff raff, but I don't think they were modelled on a particular individual.

Yes. The figures were made individually, but I don't believe that the sculptors had a particular visage in mind for the facial features.

I wonder if they knew ahead of time that the best artisans working on this project would be entombed alive in the project when it was completed? May make me want to be the
second best artisan in my field.
