Batan Is.: JJ sends some unspotted DD's to raid shipping at Batanes. No less than Arleigh Burke (the naval officer not the DDG)is waiting. We have no torps due a to previous fight but do have full magazines (including a nice supply of National Geographic with pictures of bare-breasted native women aboard LaVallette...Oooh La La..sadly, some of the pages are stuck together). Fighting starts at 7000 yds. We lose on gun hits but don't get Rong Ranced and the transports are protected.

Don't know where Calayan is? Neither did I. It's NOT Cagayan and it's NOT Calapan. It's Calayan 80 mi. west of Batan Is. These were the poor lads of USMC 2nd Def Bn headed for Batan Is. Some idiot staff flunkie paired a Large Slow Target with LCI's. The LCI's would have made Batan Is. Instead, we get to find out what JJ has at Takao. Some Spits from Batanes try to cover. One LCI survives and maybe 50-70% of the men of 2nd Def Bn but the 155's go in the drink. Bloody annoying as this was preventable.

Went to my brother's mother-in-law's funeral yesterday. Wonderful, very generous woman. Hundreds of people there. Her waitress from Coco's was there. I'm not kidding. [:)] She gave very, very generously to two churches, a Catholic Church and a Greek Orthodox Church her husband had supported. They both send the A-team. [:D]

We are talking robe-o-megaly. I think they were trying to outdo each other. The Catholics send a Monsignor....I haven't exactly worked out what a Monsignor is but they definitely outrank a parish Priest....anyway, not to be outdone, the Greek Orthodox send a highly respected Golden Glove winner...and then the Catholics counter with a two-time Cy Young winner from the pre-steroid era...and then...the Greek Orthodox bring in the Greek Orthodox equivalent of Stan Musial from out of retirement...whoa!...that's really throwing down the amaranth galero...so the Catholics hold a confab the day before the funeral and they decide to send in the BISHOP at the last second![X(]

It's brilliant! An SR-71 could not make it from Constantinople in time for the funeral! The Bishop will be in command!

So, anyway, my sister-in-law is going to say some words about her mom during the ceremony and she has to thank all the dignitaries by ascending rank. She has to wing it a bit because of the sudden changes, she's nervous, she's emotional, of course...but she is doing great and then she gets to the thanking the Bishop so she says..."and we would especially like to thank the..Pope for coming". [:D][:D][:D]

Nobody is offended, in fact, nobody can stop laughing. Even the guys in the robes are giggling, especially the Bishop who just went from Lt. General to Field Marshall. Most enjoyable mass I have ever attended. That is perhaps a shallow pond but still. Very memorable.

Burma. LYB position at Prome still very strong. Looks like there must be an entire tank division at Mandaray (363 Ronsons).

I don't think a frontal assault across the Irrawaddy at Prome will work. Maybe when 18th Div gets across upriver it will unhinge the WJD position. Or maybe we can cross on the funicular bridge to the South? They will see that coming, of course, as it would take 2 weeks of marching.

Perhaps 28th Motorised Brig just landed at Ramree can make better time?

Burma: Vengeance drivers over Shwebo get ambushed by Tojos and the like. It is said to be Guard's Armored Div down there but I wonder if it just a unit fragment considering all the tanks at Mandaray?
