Does it have good descriptions of the area where all this happened?

Capital in the Twenty-First Century, by Thomas Piketty

'Arthur Rex' by Thomas Berger and 'Pillars of the Earth' by Ken Follett. Doing a bit of rereading my all time favorites from my younger days.

Will finish off the last few pages of Naming Jack the Ripper today and then it's on to "The Book Thief". Not my usual read but my elder cruiser asked me to give it a go. On the basis that she had just agreed to read Beevor's The Second World War, I could not really say no [:)]

Once a Hussar: A Memoir of Battle, Capture, and Escape in World War II, Ray Ellis

"Vulcan 607", a wonderful story which I had never heard of until I read about it on this forum. Reading this story of the grit of real military operations is a wonderful supplement to the ease of moving a counter across a map.

Before "Vulcan 607" I finished four fine books by Alastair Reynolds. "The Prefect", "Revelation Space", "Redemption Ark", and Absolution Gap". All are set in the same SF Universe, with "The Prefect" being an excellent stand alone story, and the other three interconnected in a 2,100 page series. Reynolds is a inactive scientist, an astronomer, now dedicated to science fiction. He writes hard SF space operas, without FTL, a tricky thing to do. I really like his work, and there are more I will be reading.

All five of the books are excellent reading, and then some.

Just finished "The Hot Zone" timely and seriously concerning.

'Bout 2/3rds the way through "The Outpost" turning out the way I expected...sadly.

Its difficult to describe to be honest. It is narrated by Death but that is the not the strange thing - its more the writing style that death uses, peppering the book with clues as to what is coming next. It's interesting though - one I will continue reading.

Just finished "Lost Victories" by Erich Von Manstein. A fascinating read allowing you a glimpse into the mind of a military genius. Few people throughout history have had the tactical, operational, and strategic mind as Manstein. A pleasurable read.
