CF's back, and we got a turn running again yesterday.

I was a little slow with it. I bought a new video card, and it took some time to get it working right. I went all out with a GTX 980 Ti. My old one was 6-8 years old, and probably the bottleneck in my system. I rebuilt my machine two years ago.

Some concerns:

Ships at Bombay are showing a detection level now. That hadn't been the case for a long time. Also, it looks like he has a line of subs off the SW end of India, which I'll have to cross when the time comes. I'm not so worried about them harming anything so much as giving things away early. Some of my subs are crossing paths with his, so maybe, I'll get lucky. Methinks the bombing campaign will need to get an earlier start when I pull the trigger.

The last APAs I'm waiting for are about four days out.

Given those subs nearby, I bet the D/L at Bombay is from a Glen. If so, there should be a line in your Ops report about sighting a Glen there.

Possible. Most of his subs are down near the tip. I have DEs in country, so a sweep off the port may help too. USN ASW has gotten rather good as of late.

I'll review the log. I tend to overlook these. It may help to get a CAP up, and possibly shoot them down.

In my other game, Mavises are regularly getting splashed over Rangoon.

I had a few losers conning some of my battleships. They're now being reassigned to Adak. I'll be using a single BB which some cruisers and DDs, solely for ASuW escort of the mob. Something to handle the light stuff he's got based there. I'll make sure Willis Lee is in charge.

21 November 1943

Countdown.

Looking at the logs, I do have Japanese recon visiting Bombay. I've had a CAP up, but nothing yet. No clue as to what type of plane is visiting, either. I've stacked the CAP from 5,000 to 15,000 feet.

I created two ASW TFs of PC-461 class sub chasers to look for any Glen launchers in the area. I'm hoping that's all what's visiting, and not some ultra long range plane. I have a model of a 461 I want to finish someday, so I have an attachment to that class.

He has two lines of subs, probably five total at the southern tip of India, to the west. I'm not sure yet if I should detour around them or just punch through with a heavy ASW screen. When I'm ready to kick off, I withdraw the 461s and have them follow the fleet. I'll probably have some DEs in another ASW TF with these. In addition, a big bruising anti-surface TF will come along. Following this up will be a number of minesweeping groups. I'll have all bases covered. Most of my AMs lately have been carrying hedgehogs, so they may do double duty.

Is it feasible to do both - send two or three ASW forces to take on those five subs and send your SCTF and invasion fleet around them?

22 November 1943

My remaining APAs are a day out from Bombay. I noticed they aren't spotted, so I figure he has a recon going on there rather than a general naval search.

I'll take a day to repair the minor sys damage on the LSTs in this group, and then I'll start loading up the bodies. The main US part of the invasion is at Bombay, the rest are at Karachi. I'll load the Bombay stuff up and then move them north to Rendezvous with the Karachi invaders. Hopefully it'll provide some misdirection. The day I start loading, I'll start the air bombardment of Colombo. If/when I wrap that base up, I'll dedicate a couple squadrons to keep it broken and then focus the rest on Trincomalee. If I can take these bases out fairly quickly, I'll then focus on the troops themselves at Colombo. Recon's been indicating only fighters at these two bases. 20,000 troops have been continuously reported there also. I think I'm bringing enough rifles for this. Paras at Dambulla will land no more than a day before the guys on the beach.

Getting them on the ships should relive things at Bombay and Karachi, as both bases are seriously overstacked right now.

Beaufighters have a good day at Buna.

23 November 1943

The kick off.

Transports are preparing to load. Bombers are assigned to hit Colombo next turn. Over 200 heavies, escorted, preceded, I hope by lots of sweeps. Regardless of the fighter numbers, I hope bomber numbers will make the difference. Hopefully I can clobber that base quickly and move on to Trincomalee. Once both bases are down the paras will drop. I have probably 30 transport squadrons at Madras for the job, where all the paras live right now. Madras is a level 9 airfield with over 600 aircraft support. Lots of B-25s are moved there also, and once the airfields are down, I'll be hitting all the troops on the island.

All I have to do is take care of Ceylon. Nothing else he has can support there, without unescorted bombers going down in droves.

24 November 1943

Day one of the air offensive.

This went about as well as I could have hoped. Base damage is at about 80%. Interestingly, recon shows about 40 fighters there instead of the previous 160. I'll keep the maximum effort going another turn. If Colombo is good and down, I'll keep just 3 or 4 squadrons working on the base and switch every one else over to Trincomalee. Once that's down, the paras will make their move.

Also interesting is that some of the final straggling bombers were getting good hits on the base as the defenders got worn down. I'm guessing little to no CAP next turn, so Colombo should be finished pretty soon. Doing a quickie count, it looks like 220 runway hits, which he should feel.

25 November 1943.

The second wave to Colombo wasn't as big, most likely due to weather.

Colombo's airfield is at 100% damage. We're flipping to Trincomalee now. There was still a CAP up at Colombo, about two dozen planes worth. Maybe LRCAP from the latter base.

Despite not being docked due to TF size, all the amphib TFs loaded up in a turn. They're currently enroute will all the other accompanying groups -- ASW, ASuW, Antimine and air groups. Nobody's spotted yet.

Thanks. So far, everything's going according to plan.

I see two IJN task forces leaving Colombo, heading SE. I was worried CF had caught wind of the invasion, but thinking more, he probably doesn't want them caught from the air in port. Losing Fuso and Yamashiro most likely made an impression earlier.

He probably thinks I'm on a port smashing campaign.

My bombers have gotten worn down a bit from the first day. Trincomalee may take a little more effort to shut down. I'm hoping taking Colombo will bag a bunch of IJAAF/IJNAF squadrons. When I grab Dambulla, he won't be able to rail them to Trincomalee.

Maybe, but it sounds like he's figured out something is up. And apart from his estimates of activity at Bombay, the massive bombing at Colombo and Trincomalee probably left a subtle hint. Good luck as things unfold further.

We'll have to see how it plays. He'll have to have noticed the sudden population drop there.

Regardless, I'll probably be okay. KB's too far away. My naval aviation is ready to pounce on any ships he leaves there. My ASuW TF will handle the rest with Admiral Lee in charge.

I had been periodically sparring with the air on Ceylon off and on throughout the game. He *might* think I've upped the stakes on that battle, but I'm sure he's aware something's coming.

It's gone amazingly to plan so far, which doesn't happen much in this game for me.

Good job so far with Ceylon. Your bomber losses are pretty tolerable for the results. But do not assume that when you see 100% damage that Japanese planes will not be able to fly since you can't see runway damage. Keep working to keep both air bases surpressed and I think you will succeed.

Once Trincomalee looks to be down, I'll split the heavies between the two bases. It's easier to keep them down than to shut them down in the first place. My B-25s and such will start working on more "tactical" targets.

I won't cut the paras loose until about D-1. I have well over 20 transport squadrons for the job. Madras is level 9 and stack proof, with plenty of support.

I'm disappointed in the Spits. Their high altitude sweeps didn't do as well. I kept the 51As on escort and they did alright on that job.

Ceylon's on its own. The next feasible airbase is Vizagapatnam, which is 16 to Trincomalee and 19 to Colombo. His only option would be unescorted Netties, which my carrier fighters would rake over the coals.

My concern is CF seeing the writing on the wall and starting some offensive in India proper as a distraction. If he goes the coastal road route, I have a lot of troops at Bezwada. My recon up north is set to commander's discretion, which should catch any units starting to move up there. I don't really want to pull medium bombers off the Ceylon op, but I guess I could use the shorter ranged Blenheims and such up there. I do have plenty of fighters spread around the country. Next turn would be a good time to review what I have where across India.

It'll take a bit for the invaders to reach. Lots of those LSTs and such are 11 kt ships. I'm hoping they'll dump their loads fairly quickly. Probably 40% of the troops are on xAPs, but the hardest guys are on the assault transports. Tanks should be off the ramp quickly. Once they're off, I have a monster amount of support/base units waiting to cross. Ceylon's air bases will be up and running fairly quickly.

Once done, I'll grab spots like Addu and Diego to keep the search planes away. A USMC defense battalion arrived at Cape Town, so they'll probably go to Diego. What's next, I'll have to mull over.

27 November 1943

Ceylon air is officially shut down. It only took about five days, with the last being overkill. No fighters challenged me last turn. I won't bore everyone with the report this time.

All the sweeping squadrons are resting for now. the rest are providing CAP over my bases, in case he starts something. Heavy bombers are evenly split between Trincomalee and Colombo's airfields. B-25s are hitting the troops at Colombo. I have a couple squadrons also hitting Colombo's port, as recon indicates subs anchored there. I had the heavies at 8,000', but now I'm moving them up to about 13,000' as flak is claiming a few of them.

Recon at Bombay seems to have stopped, as my PT boats there are all unsighted now. The invasion is about 3 hexes NW of there. At this rate, I figure landings will start in 4.5 days. My two F4U squadrons in India were due for withdrawal, so I reluctantly pulled them out. My good fighters consist of one each of P-47s and P-38, along with two each of Spitfires and P-51A. Apart form that, Hurricanes and late model P-40 will carry the weight. A squadron each of SB2Cs, Vengeances, and torp carrying Beaufighters will watch for any surface ships.

Over 200k worth of supplies are on map inbound for Karachi. More have just left Cape Town and another is currently loading up. The population at Bombay is down to 50,000 now. With all these troops out, I'm hoping the supply situation will ease up a bit.

He is likely flying out troops as well, to save cadres. Do you have enough fighters to LRCAP a day or two?

If a bunch of subs start showing up I would be very careful. If your opponent is anything like mine he concentrates subs where he plans on using the KB. The appearance of a bunch of subs could mean the KB is trailing behind them.
