It seems like every other turn is good. The next one Lowpe hits back.

On the 6th the Allies send the surface forces racing at Miri. TWith 40 fighters and 114 bombers there I felt Had to take it out to get by somewhat safely. It was at 17 hex range from our starting point. Again, I had to chose to leave them there in the day phase and risk not bombarding, or getting hit by that air force.

I brought the CVs along, and the whole TF is starting to need a few days off to grease the wheels a bit.

A zero sweep picked off some Fulmars at Jesselton, but virtually nothing else happened during the entire replay. Then Boise, Helena and St Louis hit Miri for six! The base might even be closed, but regardless the 4Es will visit tomorrow. Got a few points off the oil with this one too.

The other CA TF is fresh, and I’ll use that to pile on while hitting Kuching, Singkawang and Brunei with air and other bombardment TFs. I want a window of clear air for Western Borneo so I can solidify gains and start getting the Japanese worried about how they’re now going to extricate all of these troops. Kuching alone has 16k of something. Another 8k in Singkawang.

The plans will shift back to Malaya as the CVs near Singapore. I’ve got some plans working now and I’ll explain in the next few days as they’re revealed in game.

The next stage goes well, with bombardments hitting Brunei, Miri again and Kuching. The bombers from Singapore piled on, hitting Miri, Kuching and Singkawang. None of this fields will be working for a few days.

Unfortunately the collection of partial DB/TB groups at Singapore that were already depleted this turn flew into another big CAP trap at Kuantan. Lowpe is working this angle hard, and well. Hats off. The supporting fighters from Singers do get the bombers through, and they might sink two xAK, so not all lost, but this has to stop!! [:-]

All CVs are close enough now to port that the strike planes are set to ASW and search only and they'll retire into the protective CAP of Singapore.

The next stage is about to begin. The British 18th is a turn's walk out of Mersing. This was shielded by another unit that just closed the bedside entering the Kluong stalemate. Now all troops formerly at Singapore are trapped in the lower Malaya peninsula in three bases; Kluong, Mersing and Johore Baru. This is most of six divisions and all supporting arty, HQs and other stuff. Maybe around 100k troops.

Some has been flown around, but the bulk of the divisions are here, and they'll be trapped her for good if the 18th takes Mersing in two days. That base lists only 5k troops. Probably a base force, naval guard, a few elements of a shattered 4th ID (that have been spotted here, there and everywhere) and some engineers.

Supporting troops are prepped and ready to land, loading now, in case the Brits can't take the base in the first shot. This will begin a cascade of invasions designed to encircle the IJA on Malaya and begin to threaten the Burma, Thailand and even Indochina. It will culminate in a resupply of the PI, I hope. [8D]

I won't have a full set of CV based SBD groups for a good 3-4 months! Oh well. They've served heir function well. I do have old biplane Helldivers, Devestators and Avengers to supplement. Plus a plentiful array of fighters.

Here is a map of the situation now. The CVs shown about to retire to Singers. The 18th ID moving to Mersing.

Also, a CVL in Saigon. Interesting.

Kuching with a LOT more troops than I'd expect. Not leaving anytime soon, either. The Allies will build up and just walk there eventually. Same for Singkawang. Jesselton will be a great staging base for further moves on NW Borneo and into the PI.

Units are also prepping to land at virtually every empty or lightly defended IJ owned coastal base on this map. [:)]

I think he has been using FT TFs to extract cadres of his units. Maybe Flying Boat type patrol planes too.
Those CMs at Saigon could be the ones capable of FT missions.

Well, yes they can! Great idea. I've conserved for defensive mining so far, but you're right, it may be about time to lay some offensive fields.

I'm sure pieces of all of the units in Malaya have been or will be extracted. That's fine, really. It'll be hard to build these back up in time to make any difference. I plan to move on a lot of targets fairly quickly while the KB is incapacitated.

I haven't mentioned the North recently, but today another of the far Aleutians was invaded. Three regiments landed at Agattu, and shoud easily take the base against a port unit and a naval guard. There are some IJN forces approching, including something showing up as a CV, according the Cat patrols.

All ships will move back under the Adak CAP and I'll load up for the next one at Shemya. Then hang out for the right moment. Troops are also prepping for the two Soviet islands and I'd like to grab those before winter too.

Down South the 18th British walked into Mersing. I think Lowpe just noticed it, as units are now reported moving from Kluong that direction. Thanksfully, it's a yellow road, so even tanks can't make it in a day. I plan to load up and let fly on the base before attacking. About 7-8 naval bombardments, all 4E and 2E bombers, and then a DA. If this works it'll be devastating to the IJA. It's best six free divisions trapped and about to be annihilated.

He has two more on Malaya now, and I have some plans for those too. First things first though.

The Japanese continue to push in the PI, getting Iloilo and moving more units into Clark.

Looks like they expanded a lot, using up a lot of supply but not having time to bring the new troops up to speed ... or were they completely out of supply and got their AV cut by 75% in the initial force comparison? I always thought the "supply -" adjustment happened later in the calculations.

They'd been out of supply for a while, I think. Not full strength anyway, and had been bombed and bombarded a bit before this. I've essentially left all but Luzon and Mindanao alone. The troops in Malaybalay are holding on , but out of supply, basically, so curious what the next attack will be like there. It'll be a month or so before I could plan any kind of relief there.

Luzon still has 30k+ supply though.

Mersing Falls!!

This is kind of a shock. The IJA now has it's best free divisions trapped and encircled in the lower part of Malaya. The Brit 18th is holding Mersing as numerous other units flood in. I'll send in enough to hold against anything the IJA sends, and I'm also beefing up Kluong forces in case he decides to go all in on a shock to try and bust out. I don't think it'd work, but I have to be sure, so more armor is about to enter there, bringing AV to near 1,000. I've got two divisions and an armor unit near full prep for Johore Baru, and bombardments continue to work on the troops there. I'll land in about two days.

Units will also begin loading in about 3-4 days for another target up the Malaya peninsula. It's a lot to coordinate, but the next landing, if successful, would threaten to trap a further two full free divisions.

I've begun to buy out Dutch troops, which are cheap as they are under ABDA, and have started them prepping for next level targets. I may land some without full prep on empty bases quite soon.

Up North Agattu falls as well.

Allied CVs will not move yet, but this is interesting. Where is this TF going?

The IJN races into Mersing to disrupt unloading of the troops now assigned to liquidating the Southern Army. The CA boba and CL Yura lead 4 DD and a TB and meet the RN CL TF here. These are very old but very experienced survivors of the DEI massacres here, and they hold their own easily. Yura is left with some deep black smoke after 3 penetrating 6inch shots, and two DDs are also pretty banged up. The IJN retreats after the battle and unloading continues.

The rest of the turn had some interesting developments. The IJN also bombarded Beaufort with Hyuga nd Fuso and tried a DA there which got a 1:2. It seems Lowpe doesn't like the lodgements increasing along the Borneo coastline!

The KB moved into the Sulu Sea and sent 54 Kates to bomb Jesselton. Subs are tracking exits to the Sulu Sea.

A Soviet sub puts two fish into CL Kashima. She didn't sink outright, but can't be doing too well. CL Yura from the previous turn's engagement only made about 5 hexes toward Saigon, and was attacked by the Halibut. No hits unfortunately.

Sweeps hit again in lower Malaya, and the layered Allied defenders do very well, taking down about a dozen each of A6M3 and Tojos for a handful of losses.

Nells attacked unloading ships a Sambas, sinking two, but LR CAP downed about 25. The fields here are now ready, so two groups of P-40B will move in.

The IJ troops at Malaybalay attack again, but get just a 1:2. I need to think about this and consider if it's worth it to somehow get some more supply there. I'll have to see what IJN forces remain in the area in a few turns.

Up North the IJN is showing force, trying to dissuade the Allies from continuing the slow hopping up the Aleutians. Shemya will be attacked soon regardless, and troops are nearly prepped for the two Soviet islands. One CVL/CVE doesn't look to menacing, but there is a level 4 airbase and another level 2 here. I have to be a bit careful as LR CAP doesn't extend far at this stage of the game. Don't want to lose the AP/AK mostly.

The KB is getting itself into some tight waters. I'm bringing some CVs out of pier side at Singers in case anything happens here. I have other more strategic concerns right now on Malaya and possibly a few other spots though. Those take precedent over ship chasing, especially with the common CAP trap tactic this game seems to specialise in. I'd like to only do what I have to with the CVs for a while and let groups recover.

No connection with the KB, which moves deeper into the Sulu Sea.

Sweeps are about even on Malaya, and some more bombing of the doomed subs at Manila. The bombardments by the Japanese at Clark have turned against them since I sent the biggest PA division over from Manila. I don't think there is enough here for the IJA to take either base yet. That said, I have to start getting my plans for relief together now. Where are the 17knot transports? What route do I take? How can I get fuel and an AKE forward to support?

Three divisions are going for Johore and two of them are unloading at Mersing now. Curious to see combat strength there after all of the bombardments.

The Japanese seem a bit concerned about Jesselton, and look to be landing next door at Kudat to try and walk over and retake the base. I'll aim to fly in some troops and soon I might be able to land some with the CVs in support, but they currently have another job to do.

Oscars sweep Sambas with good results. Wildcats do the same at Alor Star, and then the 4Es wreck the fields at Georgetown while some 2E hit the port. Vincents also take part, and again do some good work, sinking I-9 in port.

Amphibs are loaded and moving. CVs filed up and ready to supply CAP support, and I'm hoping to trap more Japanese forces in Malaya. Fingers crossed. [:)]

The KB is still moving around, so some of these CVs must not be too damaged. Subs are hunting though, and if these ships stay in the confined waters of the PI for long it'll be very dangerous for them.

The Japanese try several attacks this turn and all fail, but make some progress. Malaybalay is now on the brink. I won't be there soon anough to stop the fall, I think.

Cebu may hang on for a bit. It has some supply. Depends on the frequency of bombardments probably. Luzon is fine for a few months. Lots of Sallys in the PI now. Beaufort is fine with the small units here, most of which are refugees from Tarakan that have been gaining some strength with an influx of sub transported supplies.

All of this works for Allied plans. Amphibs are nearing their target. No hints that the Japanese know what is up yet. This one will start a cascading series of moves, if successful that is, and should throw a few more challenges at the Japanese.
