we will see BB bombardments daily... they hit nothing as they used up all their ammo last turn already... Hortlund complained about the uselessness of his BBs and I really have to laugh... just because he hasn´t achieved 10.000 casualties with his first attack... as said, those BBs are out of ammo, still he complains... I won´t tell him that ALL support troops at the base are COMPLETELY wrecked and I think I have 6 base forces there - all wrecked... if he´s smart he can see that anyway when flak is doing nothing...

at the moment I think we are completely disagreeing on many things as all I´m doing seems to be gamey but nothing he does is gamey... [8|] I think I really have problems doing PBEMs...

example: he had 600 aircraft at a level 4 base... for me gamey, not for him... my "offensive" in China... for him gamey, not for me...

the perfect example where EVERY more or less experienced PBEM player should see that his BBs wrecked havoc with their bombardments... the Kates attack at 11.000 ft, there are 6 Allied base forces with dozens of AA guns and it´s NIKMOD where flak is a killer, but still the Kates don´t suffer at all... why on earth would someone with at least a little experience think that the bombardments weren´t working??? I could write until the end of the day what I think about this attack... 90% of the fighter bombers and 100% of the bombers stayed home... then my strike gets butchered because I field 60 exp. (those are the ones that were doing training for months) and I face the 80 exp. Japanese super pilots...

Nik overdid it, he just overdid it making the Allied airforce useless for years with replacement pilots that are even coming in BELOW 50... I replaced what I could replace this turn and I got 8!!!!!! pilots that were BELOW 50... sorry but that´s BS...[8|] but yeah, it´s less bloody... of course it is, I only get 50% of the replacements in stock, so I can only lose 50%... means it´s just half as bloody as stock...

the next strike... we lose 89 aircraft today for ONE lousy bomb hit on an AP... wow great working mod... while I think the mod "would" or "could" work good with the adjustments made in durability, speed, armor,.... of the planes, it just can´t work if you REDUCE the bomb load AND give the Allied pilots all over the map somewhere in the low 50s with replacement pilots that can come in BELOW 50. But in return the Japanese get 1500 replacement pilots in the pool and untrained (when the pool is empty) somewhere in the high 30s which can be trained to 50 also just after doing 15 training runs...

reduced bomb load AND reduced ALLIED (only) exp results in turns like this... but you won´t see that again for long as the REDUCED aircraft replacement (Allied) also won´t let me do this again for at least a month... I lost my fighter replacement of 5 weeks today... [8|] yeah, less bloody... and I still seem to be doing good, as in my other NM game where I´m the Japanese we´re one month ahead and I´m 10:1 leading in A2A kills... [8|][8|][8|]

thanks that my stock game lasted loooooonger than every modded game I have had so far...

today, we lost the fighter production of over a month... we lost 50+ pilots that have been trained for 2 months+, so we will get pilots that are in the low 50s or even BELOW 50, which means they will perform even worse... It won´t help when I get SUPER planes later when my pilots are in the 50s but the Japanese flying Tojos then will be in the 80s... they will get 200 Tojos and I will get 30 P38 and 50 obsolete P-40s...

and then in Hortlund´s oppinion I shouldn´t set my bombers to nav attack 3.000 ft... one bomb hit today... and a whopping number of 62!!!!!! B-17E on the WHOLE map... [8|]

well, no... [:D] I had my Hurricanes at 26000 ft so my P-40s were escorting at 29.000ft. Forget about the alt... It doesn´t matter at all regarding the bounce... the bounce in the game is not what the bounce was in real life...

with the 50 exp pilots and the reduced bomb load I will go in at 1000 ft in the future... it doesn´t matter, the best Allied fighters until the Corsair arrives are no match for Oscars, Zeroes and soon Tojos when the Allied are in the 50s and the Japanese in the high 70s or 80s...

I was so upset about losing 89 aircraft last turn for one f***ing bomb hit that I forgot to set my Hurricanes to training. The amazing and again ridicoulos fact is that if you set all your bombers to nav attack 100% nav search then your bombers still launch for a nav attack... 100% for the developers of WITP isn´t what 100% is for the rest of the world... [8|] Learnt something new after 3 years... if you want ALL your bombers to do nav search, set them to NAV SEARCH. nav attack with 100% search isn´t what do think it is...

If you think about the fact that the Japanese BBs are disabling 15%+ of the whole garrison on Koepang with their bombardment runs every turn then why should Hortlund complain about them being not effective? Hortlund knows that our carriers are far away so he uses his Kates for ground attacks and his Vals for ASW. The Kates coupled with more BB bombardments in one week here than in the whole war in real life will make the base fall soon I guess. And I´m sure the BBs will be back in three turns again as they will replenish at Kendari next turn... Then we will see BB bombardment number 9 and 10... [8|] I will use dozens of slow BBs in my offensive in a year that will replenish at lev 4 ports and will bomb the Japanese to dust... [:(] torps miss... salvo of 4 torps... BB Yamashiro hit by dud Mk14s and now BB Hiei missed... Hortlund is really stretching the luck of his battlewaggons and I stay unlucky. Should I expect the next attack to be an exploding hit?? [:(] 2 near misses on O21 in return...

Aircraft Attacking:

since the start of the BB bombardments and the aerial attacks our assault value at the base has decreased by nearly 100!!!! points... [8|] means not the 2 enemy divisions will win the battle but the BBs are responsible for it... and in expected 2 turns the next 5 BBs are doing bombardment number 9... while I´m being dumb to bring troops to Koepang - because I know that the naval bombardments alone can easily annihilate such a base - I find it still, let´s say strange, to lose the base just because those BBs are shuttling in and out every couple of days replenishing at Kendari to unload their ammo on Koepang... in the game a complete Sir Robin defense is the best thing, there´s no doubt. After that you come back with full strenght and then do it like my opponent is doing it now. Wonder what Hortlund would tell me if he sees 9 BB bombardments in a couple of weeks...

this is BB naval bombardment NUMBER 10... why is Steve talking about anything being gamey? with no specific house rule about replenishing BBs / CAs he goes in and out dozens of times... as long as it will take to kill ALL troops at Koepang with BB bombardments only... very realistic... oh boy...

even if we don´t have specific house rules, I have never seen any of my opponents doing a dozen bombardments (probably more if it takes longer to take the base) while replenishing at a level 4 port just 8 hexes away... if he wants to do unlimited BB bombardments (I wouldn´t have a problem with that) then he should replenish his BBs / CAs at Soerabaja that has a level 8 or 9 port. But that´s just my oppinion...[8|]

this is the surprise I mentioned last turn! I was able to move in nearly all of the Royal Navy unspotted to 4 hexes off Koepang. Then of course the lucky guy strikes again! BAD WEATHER in the morning! There was never bad weather the last 2 months in this area, the weather forecast was partly cloudy... KB reacts one hex towards us, stays under a cloud, we don´t react and stay under a cloud. End of the morning phase... [8|] In the afternoon, no carrier TF reacts but we are not clouded anymore while KB stays under a cloud. Guess what!! No, we are not attacking the enemy carriers with full strenght, NO, we attack with a half hearted attack the most agile targets we could find, means fast DDs and manage to hit ONE with a torp.

All the Kates were set to ground attack all the last turns! Many Vals were on nav search or ASW and they couldn´t hurt our armored Brit carriers anyway. We have 6500 AA value in the TF with lots of BBs that could soak up damage! We manage to move in unspotted! No bad weather for weeks. Then, Hortlund comes away with a single torp hit on a DD... Is he lucky or am I unlucky? Or both? Or is it just the not working, f****ing sh*t "advanced weather" that manages to create thunderstorms in the dessert if you want to launch airstrikes??

As a result, we will see all of KBs bombers on nav attack of course next turn and our CV TF sunk probably... well done... our only hope is that we are now moving in a direction that Hortlund could perhaps missgues... [8|]

My British carriers survived the day! [X(] Hortlund stated that he didn´t want to enter my LBA umbrella! [X(] I´m surprised because 1) he was under my LBA umbrella all the time (even in a base hex where he only has half of his cap) and 2) because my "never hit anything" bombers scared him...

SS I-122, hits 6 <----- mine layer sub

Allied Ships
DD Sims

this is two dozen hexes South West of Los Angeles, I have no idea what a mine layer sub is doing there... one real hit, 5 near misses, a loooong way home - could mean trouble for the sub...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
and here comes this turn´s highlight:

Night Time Surface Combat, near Koepang at 28,77

Japanese Ships
DD Ikazuchi, Shell hits 21, and is sunk
DD Inazuma, Shell hits 15, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
DD Shirayuki, Shell hits 5, on fire
APD APD-34, Shell hits 3, on fire
APD APD-38, Shell hits 1

Allied Ships
BB Prince of Wales, Shell hits 1
BC Repulse
CA Dorsetshire
DD Electra
DD Encounter
DD Fortune, Shell hits 1
DD Panther

Hortlund ate our bait and moved KB to the West from Koepang, guessing our carriers would retreat there. They retreated East, where force Z was already waiting to go in to wreck havoc with the spotted TFs there and perhaps catch one of the out in never ending BB bombardment TFs. First target is an ASW TF that is shot to pieces with small calibre gun fire. BC Repulse hits DD Inazuma with a torp! The torps launched by the Japanese miss their targets. The British know how to fight at night. Banzai! ooops, I mean hurrey!

Allied Ships
BB Prince of Wales
BC Repulse, Shell hits 1
CA Dorsetshire
DD Electra, Shell hits 1, on fire
DD Encounter
DD Fortune
DD Panther

another round with another DD sunk and one of the ASW value 10 APDs sunk also! [&o]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Koepang at 28,77

DD Tachikaze, Shell hits 6, and is sunk

AK Tamagawa Maru, Shell hits 17, and is sunk

Allied Ships
BB Prince of Wales, Shell hits 1, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
BC Repulse
CA Dorsetshire, Shell hits 2
DD Electra, on fire
DD Encounter
DD Fortune
DD Panther

then we encounter a supply TF escorted by two DDs. Both IJN DDs launch torps but miss first. One is then shot to pieces when the engagement goes on at 2000 yards range... [8|] this is when Prince of Wales is hit by a torp, she retires with medium damage (sys in the 20s and nearly no more floatation).

While there were 4 or more TFs all the last turns we are still happy to shoot up those DDs. Hortlund stated with his email I must be REALLY desperate! [X(][:D][:D][:D]

this is what I answered:

Desperate? [:)] Why should I? I told you before, there wasn´t yet a situation in our campaign that made me feel desperate. You took your objectives in the SRA, not much I could do about it – I was happy with the damage done. You took empty bases in the Pacific, not much I could do about it at that time. You stopped in the Pacific, so those bases aren´t doing you any good IMO and you don´t really effect my plans there – now the rest of the Pacific is safe. Then we came to the point where I told you that there are no easy targets left and when I look at Koepang at the moment then I´m more than happy that you lost something like a dozen DDs (I hate losing DDs as the Japanese) and the base hasn´t fallen yet. It will fall, no doubt but it was surely not an easy target and your losses will be “not nice” just to take a base on Timor. [:)]

I just completely shot up an ASW TF and sunk another two DDs, that´s fine with me. You just have to live with a torp hit from 2000 yards range that does light damage. I´m happy you took the bait and retired KB to the West while Force Z came from the East. Would have been nice to meet one of your never ending BB bombardment TFs. That´s the only thing that concerned me so far, a dozen BB bombardments in 2 weeks. But that´s fine with me also, I will have more than 3 times as many BBs as the Japanese that will shuffle in an out all the time wrecking havoc with every base in range of a minor port where hula hula girls will manufacture 16 inch shells. [:)]

I really enjoy our game, lots of action all the time up to now!

we lose 11 bombers again today, that´s just not worth it. All we achieved is to damage a couple of transports and sink a DD... Hortlund is happy that he lost half a dozen DDs for the torp hit on PoW that did only light damage last turn! [X(] Well, I´m happy with that too! [:D]

I checked the sunken ship list today and the Japanese have already lost 28 DDs!! They also lost 6 cruisers so far. We lost 7 cruisers and 20 DDs! [8D] Is he really thinking that his losses aren´t hurting him? I´m confident, there are 28 DDs less and my subs will be happy about that...

I have been waiting for a strike that is coming from Amboina for a long time already. This turn the Nells came in UNESCORTED! [X(] Amboina is 11 hexes from Darwin and therefore my main port in the area is a really dangerous place for both my fighters and ships in port. We do have a lot of flak and fighters but our ships there are surely not immune. I have no idea what Hortlund was thinking sending the Nells in unescorted but he said he made a fault so I guess he had the settings of his fighters wrong. 100+ fighters are even in Nikmod able to take out an unescorted strike of 40 bombers. No Nell made it to attack the port, a dozen turned back...

CA Dorsetshire, Shell hits 9
DD Encounter, Shell hits 1
DD Panther, Shell hits 2, on fire

we move in Repulse covered by a heavy cruiser but the fight isn´t going as expected. First we are surprised by the ASW TF but the long lance attack doesn´t hit our ships. But then the WITP naval combat routine goes crazy once again and my BC acts like a PT closing in to 3000 yards. Then it wasn´t hard to hit her with a torp (just like PoW was hit at 3000 yards... all played in Hortlunds hands this turn. The last turns he stayed North to be out of range of our LBA, my TF wasn´t spotted, but still he moved 2 hexes further South this turn. This wouldn´t have been a problem because even then, my TF would be 5 hexes South of Koepang only in bomb range of KB. Hortlund can thank his brave DD that was able to put a torp into Repulse before it was sunk. This way we ended up 3 hexes South of Koepang, in perfect torp range. The outcome was clear when the attack popped up on my screen. As a side note, Derby with my 200 bombers was clouded... [8|]

This is the first major vessel we lose, so we can live with it, but of course I´m not happy about it. But that´s war! We had a plan and a little fact that wasn´t working as supposed makes our plan not working anymore. It was just all about this single torp, same fate as with the torp hit on the Bisamarck.

The old British battlecruiser was sunk today after being attacked by an enemy carrier task force...

HMS Repulse (Battlecruiser, 1916-1941)
HMS Repulse, a 26,500-ton Renown class battlecruiser, was built at Clydebank, Scotland. Completed in August 1916, she joined the Grand Fleet following post-trials modifications and operated in the North Sea for the remainder of World War I. The light protection of this class of two battlecruisers was a considerable cause for concern and, soon after the Armistice, Repulse received an extensive refit. This significantly increased her armor, and her displacement, which rose some six-thousand tons. The work was completed in 1922, after which the ship began a peacetime career of fleet operations and long-distance cruises.

In 1933-36, Repulse was again modernized, emerging with improved deck armor, a hangar and catapult for aircraft, and a greatly increased anti-aircraft gun battery. She operated with the Home Fleet in the North Sea and Atlantic during the first two years of the Second World War, taking part in the pursuit of the German battleship Bismarck in May 1941. Later in the year she was sent to the Far East, accompanying the new battleship Prince of Wales. The two ships arrived at Singapore just before Japan began the Pacific War. As soon as hostilities commenced, both steamed northwards to intercept a reported invasion force. While returning to Singapore on 10 December 1941, Repulse and Prince of Wales were attacked by Japanese high-level bombers and torpedo planes. Repulse was moderately damaged by bombs early in the action and was later hit by several torpedoes. After receiving this heavy underwater damage, she sank rapidly, followed less than an hour later by the Prince of Wales.

Knowing that strafing PT boats causes the synch bug most time, nevertheless Steve decided that it would be a good idea to do that... [8|] We are completely out of synch, in my replay Koepang is still mine whereas in the REAL replay it fell easily to the Japanese. Not just do we have synch issues now, but also I didn´t get the Japanese (real) combat report and while Steve has a perfect overview of what is happening I´m completely BLIND now... [8|]

hey, that´s no problem... we´re just having our carriers in 8 hexes range of KB and we don´t know what is happening for days as it seems the synch issues didn´t start just last turn... [:@] This is really concerning to me, would KB pop up next to my carriers now then I wouldn´t even know that. I would only see it when I check my CV TF with all my ships sunk... [:@]

Hi Castor

It's not quite as bad as that. For the most part spotting and reconning is not tooo much of a problem with sync - the real problem comes when you take damage to a sub otr something and you don't even know it's been hit.

unfortunately also the spottings during the replay aren´t "real" when you´re out of synch. This turn I have spotted and bombed ships at Koepang that weren´t even there anymore. So when we´re out of synch and I see KB at Koepang because e.g. CV Hyriu is spotted by a Hudson there, it can be up to 10 hexes at another point of the map in "real". This means if I spot it in my out of synch replay at Kendari, it could be near Darwin in "real". This is absolutely hindering my moves at the moment.[8|]
