The A's finished a fine August with a 5-4 win in Detroit. Matt Keough went 8 2/3 innings to improve to 6-12. Tiger reliever Bruce Robbins (0-2) was charged with the loss. Oakland led 5-2 going into the 9th inning. Keough retired the first two batters before running into trouble. The Tigers scored twice and Dave Hamilton came out of the pen. He allowed a single and a walk, loading the bases. He then struck out Steve Kemp to record his 10th save. Time for the SEP call-ups. Time for me to promote the 5 or 6 "almost-scrubs" from AAA. Also time for me to look at the other rosters, one-by-one, for any fictional players.

As many teams have signed fictional players to get to 35-man rosters, I must go in there and "keep them on the bench" so they don't get into any games.

Gorman Thomas led a 21-hit Brewer attack, going 4-6 with 6 RBI and hitting his 35th homer, as the Brewers bombarded the A's, 21-4. Paul Molitor was 2-6 with 4 RBI and his 9th homer, Sixto Lezcano was 5-6, Sal Bando was 3-5 with 3 RBI, and Dick Davis swatted his 12th homer. Mike Caldwell went the distance for the Brewers, improving his record to 15-11.

For the A's, lefty swingers Revering, Murphy, and Page rested and watched Oakland pitchers get abused. Starter Mike Norris lasted only 1 2/3 innings and surrendered 7 runs. Mike Morgan allowed 3 runs in 3 1/3 innings. Next was Alan Wirth, who walked 3 and allowed 5 hits without retiring a batter. All 8 men came around to score. Jim Todd allowed 3 runs in 2 innings. Brian Kingman held the Brewers off the board in the 8th and 9th innings. In the fateful 6th inning, through the combined efforts of Wirth and Todd, Milwaukee scored 11 runs and had another runner on 2nd base WITH NO OUTS.

The team will take Tuesday off, before finishing up the 2-game series with the Brewers on Wednesday.

Rick Langford shut down the powerful Milwaukee lineup with a 4-hitter, as the A's split the series with the Brewers, winning the game 2-1. Oakland's runs came courtesy of a 3rd inning 2-run homer by Mitchell Page (17). Milwaukee scored its only run in the 8th on doubles by Lenn Sakata and Cecil Cooper. Langford struck out 4 and walked 3, as he improved to 9-14. Lary Sorensen also notched a complete game, but dropped to 13-13.

3B Wayne Gross suffered a minor hip injury while fielding a ball in the 1st inning. He will miss about a week. The tandem of Mickey Klutts and Milt Ramirez will fill in.

The Oakland A's came back from a 4-0 deficit and a season-ending injury to their starting pitcher to beat Milwaukee 6-4. It was the 6th win in a row for the upstart A's.

In the 1st inning, Rick Langford allowed a hit and a walk to the first two batters. Facing the dangerous Cecil Cooper, Langford induced him to hit a weak roller near the mound. Langford turned and fired to 3rd for the forceout on Paul Molitor. In the process, though, Langford suffered a serious elbow injury and is lost for the season.

Brian Kingman came on to relieve Langford and things didn't look good. Kingman allowed both runners to score, then gave up a 2-run homer to Sixto Lezcano (21) in the last of the 2nd. Trailing 4-0, the A's chipped away. Rob Picciolo (6) homered to make it 4-1 in the 3rd. The A's would add two more in the 6th, cutting the lead to 4-3. Oakland struck for 3 runs in the 8th off losing pitcher Lary Sorensen (13-14). Dave Hamilton pitched a scoreless 8th and 9th for his 13th save. Brian Kingman went 6 2/3 innings of relief, allowing only the homer to Lezcano. Kingman is now 5-4 and will most likely take Langford's spot in the rotation.

Dwayne Murphy was 3-5 at the plate. Dave Revering went 4-5 with 2 RBI. Jeff Newman was 0-5, but plated two RBI on groundouts, including the go-ahead run in the 8th.

The 3-game series with Milwaukee continues Wednesday, with Matt Keough taking the mound for the A's.

The Brewers pounded the A's 13-5 to take the series. Milwaukee got homers from Sixto Lezcano (24), Larry Hisle (7), and Ben Oglivie (23). Oakland took a brief 2-1 lead in the 5th after Dave Revering (13) hit a 2-run homer. The Brewers caught fire and knocked Steve McCatty (10-14) out in the 7th inning. McCatty allowed 5 runs in 6+ innings. The bullpen threw beach balls in the 7th and 8th innings. Bob Lacey allowed 5 earned runs in 2/3 of an inning. Alan Wirth then allowed 3 earned runs in 1/3 of an inning. Glenn Burke hit a 3-run homer in the top of the 9th, his first homer of the year.

The A's now visit Comiskey Park for a weekend series with the White Sox.
