Oh, in other news. I know some of you have been wondering about the battleline. I think you are operating under a misappreciation that I throw battleline units away without thought. I'd point out that apart from the rather big disaster in which 4 RN BBs got sunk by Bettys in a single day I haven't lost a single BB or CA since taking over. Not one, ever CA and BB which got hit is either still with the fleet or in port being repaired. With that said my command has certainly been a bad time to be in a CL or DD --- but I view them as expendable, eminently replaceable units and treat them as such.

Anyways, today another RN battlegroup joined up with the forces in the Aleutians and with a slow USN BB just a few days my forces in the Aleutians will soon dispose 6 BBs ( 3 lightly damaged ), a good core of a dozen CAs, 4 or so CLAAs and about 40 fully functional DDs. That is, now, more than enough to fight off the remnants of the IJN ( excepting KB obviously ). The attritional fight against the IJN surface groups, won at such cost in Allied light units ( DDs and CLs ) has proven successful.

What's the status of BB Lion?

LOL! That's a pretty good summary of things actually Harlock. Very amusing actually [8D]
 
 
BB Lion is back in Kodiak in a Level 6 Port with my pre-positioned Naval HQ and 4 ARs to help repairs. Most of the other BBs and CAs are back in CONUSA.

But I expect he'll defend his OIL and then I'll go after the real fulcrum of his economy --- and, no, I won't be telling you what those targets are as there are only a few of them and I shouldn't need more than 3 or 4 days of attacks to cripple him.

I think I know the answer to this one Professor. If I guess it, do I get any bonus points?? [:D][:D]

Some of the heavily damaged ships from Pearl should be nearing repairs at the mega-repair yards in the southern shipping channel. With over 800 repair points per day, O thought that was the best place to put them and allow the West Coast repair yards to do short term repair work and do the upgrades.

By the way... If anyone else wants any particular aspect discussed about a particular region or targetting priority or anything at all like that feel free to ask away. I get bored without a bit of interaction.

One thing this AAR has proven again. Any future opponents better defend or attack aggressively in the Aleutian Islands if they have any hope of victory against you. [:D] I thought I had given Damian a big enough hint to have him re-read your old AARs to get him up to speed. Maybe he did, but by then it was too late. 

It's a viable attack route in the game, I just don't think weather is adequately modeled compared to rl. There should be lots of planes sitting on the ground and "didn't locate target" results when they do launch up there, especially on nav attack.

Well, I would say that between half and two-thirds of all potential strikes by Japanese or Allied planes in the Northern Area have been scrubbed due to weather. The weather has really impacted operations up there - which is why I chose that route.... The Japanese have the ability to overwhelm my forces in a stand-up fight and so anything which limits both sides ability to fight equally tends to reduce their ability to overwhelm me and thus, actually, works in my favour. The whole Northern route has really worked out well for me. If I had a stronger CV force I'd have definitely gone deep but if I'd met KB in the open ocean it would have utterly destroyed not only my CV forces but also my transports etc... which would have been rather disastrous and kept Japan in the game until 1943/44 for sure.

Damn, there's just 3% toomuch airfield damage for my planes to fly CAP. This means that Okha is toast. Without CAP the enemy will be able to use planes to attack my ground forces, riving their disruption up to such levels that any ground attack will surely fail. So, from now on I'm going to focus on improing the forces at Sovyetskaya Gavan and Magadan.

It's a pity but that's war for you. 3% airfield damage has cost me Okha.

When the number of bombers over Manila falls a little I'll know he is about to strike Sovyetskaya Gavan hard as that has to be an Alpha Strike target and he can't make an Alpha Strike without these training groups. So, the number of bombers over Manila should give me 1 to 2 days warning of an Alpha Strike on Sovyetskaya Gavan. This is why I would make the Alpha Strike without the Manilla groups but I doubt Damian is quite that sneaky yet.

Things are continuing apace with Damian beginning to see the danger of Sovyetskaya Gavan and re-orienting on it. I think I have enough fighters to just about hold him off but it will be close. What Damian doesn't seem to realise, at all, is that between the Soviet Air Force, the Australian Air Force, USAAF and British Air Force between India, Burma, China and the Soviet Union I have no more than 400 fighters available. I've cut my forces to the bone in these massive battles and while I've cut his to the bone also he could regain it with some more positive use of his CVs. He just needs to focus on one theatre and turn it around and then he can cascade that advantage in other theatres.

Damian has started posting again -- though he's forgotten to rename his thread now that the action has shifted away from Cold Bay. Can we have any of your insights, especially how well Manila is holding out?

Hi, we're back on track, albeit it a little slowly so I'll give a little update.

1. Manilla - Manilla only holds out due to the continuing ability of units without supply to benefit from URBAN HEX BONUSES. It's as simple as that. I have a few ideas about drafting in submarines to run supplies from Haiphong to Manilla but that'll only begin occurring at the beginning of December. Well, the other reason Manilla still holds is that all of the action elsewhere has meant Damian has never been able to draft in the additional 2,000 AV he'd need to make successful shock attacks.


2. Bangkok etc. Well I'm about to break through. I've removed a lot of troops from Oz ( but still have several thousand AV of defenders ) and added them to the push southward such that my attacking forces now mass some 5,500+ AV. That ought to be enough to bull through almost anything the Japanese can mass. I am expecting VERY heavy fortifications at Bangkok but I think that my willingness to accept massive casualties should see me bull through in time and once I'm through the Japanese are going to find it very difficult to get the APs and AKs they need through in time to evacuate what they need to evacuate. I'm quite looking forward to taking Singapore and being able to bring the Royal Navy into action in the DEI.


3. Damian was about to land a Division at Gavan when I pointed out that it was better to mass one's forces and take one objective than to scattergun onto 2 objectives and end up taking neither. He thus landed at Ohka and has taken it. Fortunately this was expected and in the meantime I've begun flying a 2nd division into Gavan - securing it against almost any amphibious assault - have improved the supply situation at Magadan from 2,000 tons to 11,000 tons and have flown the guts of two divisions into islands in the Kuriles which Damian has made a serious error in not retaking.

4. The USN is fully in action and is ready to go with 6 BBs and loads of CAs, CLs and DDs. Currently I'm planning to use them as Fast Transports for an invasion of Petropavlovsk.

5. Elsewhere --- I've been picking up some hints of IJN DDs and APs/AKs at Kwajalein, Marcus and even Palmyra. I have, for some time, been expecting a thrust at either Hawaii or Panama. I tried to be helpful to Damian by warning him that either of these objectives would be suicidal but I think he isn't going to listen. I won't sink his ships on the way in but I will just invite the invasions in and bog them down with my numerous ground forces.


What else is happening? nothing much really. I have rebuilt significant fighter forces and when the time is right my pockets are now deep enough to fight him and defeat his fighter force in the air. e.g. I have about 100 Spitfire Vs with Exp 70+ pilots and about 150 MiG-3s with Exp 70+ pilots ready and so, for the first time, the British and Soviet theatres will be able to stand and fight without outside help. This opens up the possibility of greater simultaneous operations.

Seriously most of the advice I give Damian is actually spot on. E.g. I would argue that it is self-evidently better to land 300 AV of troops at Ohka where the Japanese already have 300+ AV facing 200 Allied AV ( making 600 AV vs 200 AV ) than landing that 300 AV on a Soviet base defended by major coastal defences and containing over 400 AV of Soviet troops. With that said I wouldn't tell Damian precisely what to do ever but I would give broad suggestions as to what would make sense - e.g. I pointed out the importance of retaking Ohka and have warned him off a few operations which would not have turned out well.
 
As to Hawaii. Well, I told him it would be suicide, it just won't be suicidal in the way one would think. I don't need to kill things at this stage, I just need to bog them down as hi AKs and APs will have to bring in supplies to forces which are bogged down while they could just ignore dead troops... and if he has to send APs and AKs in then he'll have to cover them with CVs. So, essentially I am viewing any operation against Hawaii or Panama ( but I think Hawaii is much more likely ) as being a great opportunity to tie down a few divisions of Japanese troops and a significant number of CVs.
 
 

Another day, another major raid.
 
The Japanese finally got round to hitting Magadan. The raid was unescorted and preceded by NO fighter sweeps. Maybe they were snowed in? In any case this meant I got to shoot down lots of Bettys and Ki-264s.
 
I have loaded 1st USMC Division onto DDs, CLs and BBs and will be sending them into Petropavlovsk ASAP to offload and take the damned place. Once that's done I'll be able to fly P-40Es all the way from CONUSA to the Soviet Union. That will represent one of the great nails in Japan's coffin.
 
Since I'm concerned about Hawaii and now have 4 fully repaired CVs I am also going to bring them out from CONUSA to Umnak where they will provide a naval airbridge to Hawaii for my P-40Es if the Japanese are definitely coming --- and I think they are as I now have spotted at least 10 APs and a few DDs at Palmyra. In the meantime my Beauforts and B-25 Ds are also en route to Hawaii with a view to providing some attrition of the Japanese shipping. I do NOT want to stop the invasions, that wouldn't serve my purposes, but I do want to let him land, hold him to small gains and then routinely bleed his resupply/reinforcement runs such that I can, strategically, pin a portion of his CV force in place.
 
Killing all those ground troops would give his CVs back their strategic mobility. So long as they live I doubt Damian will be sufficiently ruthless to abandon them in order to regain his CV's strategic mobility. I would and would do so in a heartbeat but Damian won't be that ruthless IMO.
 
 
In other news the Allies are going to attack in the hex 60 mile north of Bangkok while a Dutch parachute unit drops onto bridges in the Bangkok hex. I wouldn't block the Japanese retreat to force their surrender ( that would be within the rules of this game BUT it would also prevent Damian from having any hope of stopping me and I wouldn't enjoy that ) but this paradrop will force the Japanese to retreat WEST toward Malaysia instead of SOUTH into Bangkok and will give me a better chance of bouncing Bangkok.
 
In other news the sub shuttle to Manilla gets under way while my reinforcement flights to the Kuriles continue unabated.
 
 
Pretty soon we'll see a rapid ground advance from Bangkok toward Malaysia and into Vietnam ( linking up to the Chinese forces there who are also now beginning their assault into Southern Vietnam - they were waiting for the Allies to get just north of Bangkok in order to maximise the psychological impact of the multi-pronged advance ) and massive air battles over the Kuriles and, I think, an attempted Japanese invasion of Hawaii. It should be pretty fun and exciting.

"For a fleeing foe, build a bridge of silver". Sounds like a reasonable move -- provided the Dutch unit can take care of itself in a fight.

It is small and expendable .
 
So, today I cleared the road to Bangkok. I think there are about 900 AV worth of defenders there ( behind massive forts ) with another 900 AV or so off to the west where they were forced to retreat by my paradrop and there's another 900 AV of IJA troops who have been succesfully drawn off to the south-east by my deployment of 900 AV of Chinese troops into Vietnam etc. I really must remember to take a picture to illustrate this.
 
Basically though I've chopped the IJA in Malaysia/Thailand/Vietnam into 3 distinct groups which are NOT mutually supporting and I have the possibility of crushing each component quickly if the Japanese either:
a) don't unite their guys on the ground into a small series of strategic redoubts or
b) don't evacuate them by ship.
 
In order to take care of the ship-borne option I have deployed 120 Pe-2s to cover the ports from Bangkok to Camranh Bay and have another 100+ Avengers and 100 Spitfires ready to swarm wherever the Pe-2s make contact. I won't try to prevent the evacuation totally, that would leave the troops stranded and cause me massive delay while I killed them on the ground. Instead I'm going to hit the enemy forces when they have troops on board and try and drown as many as possible.
 
 
In other news: 1st USMC Div is fully loaded aboard warships and is hanging out around Attu Island. I am certain there are IJN CVs in the area so tomorrow I plan to send some ships 180 miles out from Attu Island in order to spark an enemy airstrike. The plan is to butcher his strikegroups and use the day or two's grace that gives me to race into Petropavlovsk.
 
lastly even more APs are seen to be hanging around Palmyra. Damian's OPSEC sucks on this op. It could be intentional and be a trap for me and that's something I'd definitely do but I don't think Damian is the sort to try lures like this quite yet.... after we debrief this game? Sure but not yet.
