RE: BACK IN BUSINESS - PzB goes East again(st) Andy Mac

I got enough transports, but not a lot to spare [:)]
Today was Andy's day! He sent his US carriers aroud to Java, I was half way expecting something after he introduced his "surprise". Fortunately the Palembang invasion and the small CVE covering force was left alone.
Further to the south the carriers slipped close to Makassar and hit our ships that had just completed unloading and were heading back to base. We had some Zero's on CAP and these shot down a couple of carrier fighters and some Dutch planes.
Much more opposition the enemy didn't encounter and in AE carrier ac are a lot more accurate than in the rl! [:(]
Our damage tally;
CL Nagara - out of control
CL Kashima - out of control
2 DD damaged, should be ok
4 PB sunk
2 DMS sunk
8 AK - damaged / sinking
I decided to keep our carriers as distant support and rely on LBA to support these "smaller invasions".
Unfortunately the only strike from Balikpapan "got lost" and didn't find their targets (18 crack Nells).
We had a further 12 Nells in the base and another 50 naval bombers in Kuching within range, so I was a bit dissappointed that we didn't get a chance to hit back.
So an annoying incident, but now Andy's surprise has been sprung and there will be no more easy pickings in this round.
The entire Pacific is open for business since the enemy carriers are in the DEI and that is...interesting!
The Mini KB has sailed at full speed to intercept the US carriers; Nagumo command 1 heavy carrier (Soryu), 3 light carriers and 1 seaplane tender. There is also a carrier escort group with 2 CVE's and 2 sea plane tenders. In all some 165 carrier ac and ca 80 seaplanes. This force should be a match for the enemy group - especially if we can get LBA into action.
I choose to consider this "incident" as an opportunity to get to grips with the enemy's most important ships - costly as it may be! BANZAAAI [&o]

Andy's Surprise

by PzB74
Andy's carriers headed towards Ambon - Darwin.
Can we keep track of them and get a shot?
Burning derelicts sank today, 2 were helped by enemy CAG.
Lots of administration as troops and ac have to be distributed to the newly captured bases.
Time table:
February; Java and Sumatra as well as clean up missions in the DEI
March; Rangoon, Port Moresby and Bataan?
April - May; Phase 2 TBD
Options:
Northern Australia or Southern Australia and New Caledonia / Fiji
Ceylon / southern India
Pearl Harbour and Hawaii? [:D]
Let's keep all opportunities open.

Ok we're getting ready to move on. In the DEI Ambon and Kendari are next on the immediate list.
We're also fanning out in Sumatra and preparing for our move towards Rangoon.
Troops are also being shipped to the Philippines and the buildup at Truk / Rabaul continues while our troops secure
bases in New Guinea and the Solomons. Shortland was invaded today.
Before invading PM I'd like to have at least 1.5 divisions worth of troops available.
I'm trying to find as many highly experienced regiments as possible.

We have managed to stabilize the decline in supplies, fuel, oil and resources.
- Relieved to see that it's possible to stop the decline in reserves cause the first month of war cost a lot!
Industry is also mostly producing a surplus result.

Will secure more bases in Sumatra as well as Kendari before starting the invasion of Java.
Plan is to land 3 divisions and support units and sweep over the island asap! If we can do this within the end of February we may be ready for Phase 2 by April 42 which is my goal.
- All future objectives depends on how well we fare until then.
The part from April 42 until April 43 is probably the most interesting part of the game.
These first months is really a chore....

Must check; have released a few crack regiments from Kwantung.
Got 3 80 exp and one 60 exp regiments preparing for PM as well as many smaller units.
When we have 600 AV I think we're ready to go.

Did you get the 90th out of Korea? Key piece to the PM puzzle IMO.

Todays drama happened around Buna.
The plan was to unload an LCU using fast transport - in our under cover of darkness.
That's the theory anyway; offloading got delayed and suddenly 22 enemy dive bombers came out of PM!
Our long range CAP did a decent job but enough got through to hit 2 of our destroyers. The small Mutsuki class Kikuzuki
sank after taking 2x1000lb bomb hit. The larger Fubuki class destroyer Sazanami also took a solid hit and flood damage is 75 and I don't think she will make it.

New Guinea - Port Moresby / Buna
Think it will still be a couple of weeks before our invasion of PM can start.
Today airfields in Rabaul were extended to 5 and another 18 Zeros and 36 naval bombers were moved in.
This will give us more punch and without a CAP it should be possible to close down PM.

Regarding your question about the Japanese pilot pool Pacificbetta;
- I've done my best to reduce losses but not sure I've succeeded.
I draw max pilots to all my units in training and transfer all those with 70+ exp to the reserve.
My operational units usually have core of experienced pilots that I mix out with fresh recruits.
Casualties are usually taken from the lower en of the list...true Darwinism with room for idealism here.
See attached screenshot;

The replacement pool you refer to are pilots that have graduated from flight school and are waiting to be assigned to a unit. The pilots in the Month #-# columns are currently in flight school. When they graduate, they will move to the replacement pool. At least, that is my understanding.
My goal is to draw as many pilots out of the replacement pool as possible and start them training. But waiting till the get to 70 exp seems like overkill. I am aiming for 60.

If I'm reading your tables right,
IJA 2649 and IJN 2078 are the current pilots in your pool that have gone through basic flight training,
The others are still in training, broken up into 4 classes. Each class is 3 months long and the entire curriculum takes 1 year to complete.
So it looks like you have an average pilot gain of 300 per month from each school.
I think it was mentioned that adding High experienced Pilots to the Training command accelerated the graduates you get. (i.e less training time to get more pilots out the door)

LOL, but it appears that the darwinism will allow you to have a lot of crack 85+ pilots who you can then transfer back as instructors.
At what experience rating did you transfer the pilots to the frontline unit? (I assume you draw pilots that as soon as you have "vacancies" in the frontline?)
