March 6, 1942

Another frustrating day for the allies.

I tried to sneak a carrier TF into the Diego Garcia area but I am lit up like a christmas tree. I am guessing he has a CS fleet at the minimum conducting search only. My TF plans to sail into Diego which is free of mines at the moment and grab the small amount of fuel that is there.

I can avail myself of the 40 fighter CAP above and see what occurs.

The KB remains near Adelaide and thus confirms an invasion as it is not safe to just loiter about. I lost 2 DB squadrons to his CAP as they went in singly and unescorted.

Putting up CAP now to hopefully attrit some of his fighters if he chooses to attack an airfield again.

I have 400 AV at Port Augusta and the Americal division along with a lot of artillery is in stat mode moving to support for over 700AV total. I absolutely need to keep Port Augusta open if I want the rail line from Kalgoorlie to be operational when I get there.

I don't know where the US carriers are. With KB playing in such an obscure spot should that not leave wide avenues open for the US carriers to play almost at will elsewhere?

2 almost got killed south of Australia and are trying to get back to a home port.

2 are at Diego Garcia under 10/10 observation. I am going to use them to sail up to Addu Island and give it a good whack and see what drops out. After that I may need to get them out of the picture. Dont like such scrutiny. He has a lot of BB's and CA's up here and probably a CVE or CVL or two.

Also, since it is March, most of them are due for an overhaul and I am only now getting F4-F's so it would be best for them to be down for the next 2 months.

I am pushing pretty hard for March of 1942

I would conserve your CVs. It's too early yet, and they're in the wrong place to push hard. If I were in your position and could have them anywhere on the map right now, given KB's position, I would have them in the Arctic. If I had all 4, I might try to suss out how close I could get to Japan without being detected (using some kind of picket-scouts like old DDs, of course) and then see if I could raid Hokkaido. It starts out with very minimal protection. If he's spending so much effort down south and trying to push you hard for an AV, I doubt he has any LBA to speak of in Hokkaido (literally none starts there). Sapporo has some industry. I'd try to bomb it. If I got sniffed out by LBA before getting the chance to launch, oh well - at least I'd get his attention. IMO they aren't going to do much good in the IO at this point in time, especially as you can't risk a tangle with KB without more fighters onboard than they come with (resize to 36 in July would be the earliest), and you shouldn't need them to support the operations on land in India.

If he's still focused on the south western part of the map, you can hit him where he's not. I think at this point in India, you'll either hold or you won't with what's already there. Because NJP is an experienced player my plan is to keep multiple air task forces in several locations ready to take advantage of the KB's absence. I have one group in the IO, one supporting Australia ops and in 3 months I will get 2 more carriers to work the pacific. It will be at least a year before I have enough strength to go toe to toe with the KB.

As for the arctic, I have 300 AV at Kodiak and nothing much elsewhere. If I get enough PP for a division I want to put one on the big island up there to create a sub/ship base but do not want to put something there I am going to lose easily.

Right now I am trying to survive in Australia and India but I do have eyes on Addu Island within 3 weeks and am training troops for some of the pacific islands but I need PP's to release stuff before I can move it. Within the next month I will have a division and multiple regiments to start working on the Pacific.

Once India is stablized I can look toward getting Ceylon back. In 23 days Karachi and Madras each get 300 AV and at that point if he has not taken any of the 4 major cities in India it will likely not happen. 1100AV at Calcutta, 1200 AV at Madras with 600 AV on the way to add to support. 700 AV at Bombay and 400 AV at Karachi. He is really not close to Bombay or Karachi so it would be a week or two before he could even get to them.

NJP performs an attack on Port Augusta with the KB. It is met by some significant resistance of almost 50 Aircobras and Warhawks. 4 Zero's are destroyed along with 9 Kates and the attack is largely unsucessful.

Prior to this, my fear was if I put some troops on Adak then NJP might hop right over it and take Dutch Harbor or Kodiak. So, because I did not have enough to support operations everywhere I backed up all troops to Kodiak to ensure their likely survival.

The tides of war are fickle however. The bases that he ignored in the DEI and Pacific are being captured now. It makes sense because his amphibious bonus will run out at the end of the month. I just won a pretty significant land battle in Australia, see below.

Time to start planning other fronts as you suggest.

The tides of war...

This day saw a significant battle between the forces at Cunderdin. 3 days ago I had strat moved most of the army from Perth to Cunderdin. The day after I did it, NJP began bombarding so he knew what was up. 2 days later I shock attacked even though I was not completely unpacked into combat mode. 3 major factors contributed to a tactical victory on the battlefield. I would say those were the amount of armor, the terrain and the supply of the Japanese forces.

The Japanese lost over 6000 troops but what is more significant is they lose 174 combat squads and 169 non-combat squads in the fighting. And the most important fact is the troops that were involved. The 4th division took a hit and that is not going to be good in the long run for the Japanese.

NJP is moving his retreated forces NE of Cunderdin. It is the farthest he can move away the fastest. With his supply situation I dont think his troops will be battle ready any time soon.

Because of this I am going to try to get the bulk of my forces back to Perth before he can take the city. He has 2 units of undetermined size NE of the city and one unit blocking between my forces and Perth. I have 76 AV behind lvl 3 forts so they may save the day. If I lose Perth and can re-take it the next turn there will probably be some secondary damage but overall if I can manage to hold the line here he may back off. Esperance was taken and he will either use it to re-supply or evacuate the troops he has at Kalgoorlie.

I have 33K at Cunderdin so hopefully the supply will last me long enough to stabilize the situation. If not the run for Kalgoorlie is still an option and one of the safest ones I have right now.

The KB warped out of sight south of Australia. My carriers survived to sink another day.

I agree with Loko on the US carriers...damm shame they are in IO....I doubt they change much there but they could sure have fun in mid-Pacific now. Mt doctrine in '42 is that US CVs should never be within 30 hexes of KB if it can be avoided!

They shouldnt be anywhere right now. 2 need to be down for refit and 2 more next month. Sydney just took 1. I am moving the 2 in the IO to Adan. I think that there is a chance that NJP decided to go after the carriers in the IO with the KB. If that is the case it will eventually be confirmed at Diego. That would be worth it all by itself.

I still had buffalo's on the one carrier. They need a couple months to get fitted with F4-F's and get competent pilots on them. Then I can be a danger to him. Right now they are just bait.

Buffalos is a perfect reason to concentrate them where the KB ain't [;)]. Still, you have what you have right now. I don't disagree with where you're sending them, but I'd still nudge you to think about moving them somewhere else (opposite side of the map) very soon/after the refits.
