U.S. Navy uses Raytheon's SM-6 to Destroy Ballistic Missile Target for the First Time

In a first-of-its-kind test, the U.S. Navy fired a Raytheon Company Standard Missile-6, intercepting and destroying a short-range ballistic missile target at sea. The successful U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) test proved a modified SM-6 can eliminate threat ballistic missiles in their final seconds of flight.

The Missile Defense Agency (MDA), U.S. Pacific Command, and U.S. Navy Sailors aboard the USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53) successfully conducted a series of four flight test events exercising the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) element of the nation's Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS). The flight test, designated Multi-Mission Warfare (MMW) Events 1 through 4, demonstrated successful intercepts of short-range ballistic missile and cruise missile targets by the USS John Paul Jones, configured with Aegis Baseline 9.C1 (BMD 5.0 Capability Upgrade) and using Standard Missile (SM)-6 Dual I and SM-2 Block IV missiles. All flight test events were conducted at the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF), Kauai, Hawaii.

India Cancels $12B Combat Jet Program

India has cancelled its $12 billion program to purchase 126 medium multirole combat aircraft.

According to a July 30 press release from the Indian Ministry of Defence, “The RFP issued earlier for procurement of 126 Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) has been withdrawn.”

Official: France and Russia Reached an Agreement for the Non Delivery of the 2 Mistral Class LHDs

The sensitive case of the non-delivery of two Mistral class LHDs to Russia reached an end tonight, after eight months of intense negotiations. According to an official press release from the French presidency, France and Russia reached an agreement.

Under this agreement:
- The Russian Federation is exclusively and fully reimbursed of the sums advanced under the contract;
- Russian equipment that were installed on the vessels will be taken off board and given back to Russia;
- France will have full ownership and free disposal of the two vessels.
President Hollande and Mr Putin welcomed the friendly and open atmosphere of partnership that marked the negotiations.

Photo report: 24 Hours Aboard a PLAN (Chinese Navy) Type 052C Luyang II class Destroyer

Journalists from a Chinese naval magazine were able to spent some time aboard People's Liberation Army Navy's (PLAN or Chinese Navy) Type 052C Destroyer Changchun (hull numer 150). They published an interesting photo report with one picture every hour during an entire day (24 hours) showing the life of the crew on board a PLAN destroyer. Pictures were taken in July 2015 while the vessel was deployed in the western Pacific ocean.

There are discussions on Chinese military forums about whether this twin-cannister TEL really carries YJ-18 or an entirely new missile system not seen or heard before. Since the YJ-18 is said to be based on the 3M-54 "Sizzler", acquired through the import of the Russian Kilo-class SSKs, the screengrabs clearly show a missile of considerable length, with, what appears to be a larger diameter booster section at the rear. This is definitely no 3M-54 or any missile related to the Klub-series of AShM.

Some people even suggested that this might be a Chinese mid-course ABM interceptor missile.

China Unveiled its First VLFS Project Similar to the US Military Mobile Offshore Base Concept

China unveiled its first "Very Large Floating Platform" project which appears to be a 21st century iteration of the US Military "Mobile Offshore Base" concept. The project was unveiled to the public during the "National Defense Science and Technology Achievements" exhibition held recently in Beijing.

Russia’s Future Aircraft Carrier Project 23000E Storm Will Be Nuclear-Powered According to OCK

According to Russian state owned news agency TASS citing a spokesman for the United Shipbuilding Corporation (OCK), Russia’s future aircraft carrier Project 23000E "Storm" will have to be equipped with a nuclear power plant.

"The project of a future Russian aircraft carrier, or as it is sometimes referred to as naval aircraft carrying complex, is in the design phase. Research conducted by the Nevskoye Design Bureau indicates that the sole way of meeting the Navy’s requirements, such as power generation, sea endurance and voyage range is to equip the ship with a nuclear power plant," the source said.

Still looks like Russia hasn't figured out that catapults are more efficient for flight operations than the ski-jump. Still, it is an interesting design, nonetheless.

^ Keep in mind that, unfortunately, several times since 2008 the Russians have announced their plans to build carriers.. so far not one piece of steel has been cut. We will see in a couple years if the "Mistral deal" changed anything to the situation and had any influence on carrier construction.

Considering the state of Russian economy and the fact that even Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates are sitting incomplete, since turbines needed were made in..Ukraine. Cannot see Russia to be able to replace that production within few years.

So, I think those Russian carrier plans are pure fantasy right now.

Modernization of French Strategic Oceanic Force: Le Triomphant SSBN Now Fitted with M51 SLBM

On August 4, 2015, the French Navy (Marine Nationale) took over full responsibility and the effective command of ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) Le Triomphant (S616). This transfer of responsibility is an important milestone following the refit period started in May 2013 for maintenance, repairs, modernization and adaptation to the M51 new generation submarine launched ballistic missile (SLMB). Le Triomphant will now start some trials at sea before returning in the operational cycle.

Le Triomphant, head of the class commissioned in 1997, returned to the French Navy SSBN base of L'île Longue on April 14, 2015, following 20 months of work at the DCNS shipyard in Brest naval base. Work focused on the upgrade of the missile launch system. The SSBN is switching from the M45 SLBM to the new generation M51 SLBM. The submarine was also fitted with the new SYCOBS tactical combat system (a new combat management system common to Barracuda class SSN and the Le Triomphant class) and an overall more efficient navigation system (SGN-3E). Le Triomphant will also be able to deploy the F21 new generation heavyweight torpedo for self defense once procured by the French Navy. Finally, this periodic downtime was an important step for the Le Triomphant since this was her mid-life refit.

Taiwan's CSIST Unveiled the Sea Oryx Naval Air Defense System Similar to RAM at TADTE 2015

At the TADTE (Taipei Aerospace & Defense Technology Exhibition) 2015 defense exhibition held this week in Taipei, the Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology (CSIST) unveiled for the first time the Sea Oryx naval air defense missile system. The system appears close in concept to the American/German RAM (Rolling Airframe Missile) system developed by Raytheon/Diehl/RAM-SYS or to the Chinese Type 710.SJ01-24 launcher for HQ-10 missile.

PLAN holds 'largest-ever' firepower display in SCS drills

Key Points
-A 10-day naval exercise in the South China Sea was the largest-ever display of firepower by China's PLAN, according to state media
-The exercise involved over 100 ships and also showed what is likely the first images of an ASROC-type missile being fired from a Type 054A frigate

This reveal is the long-awaited pictorial confirmation of ASROC capability of the Type 054A FFG's HHQ-16 VLS, as mentioned by an official PLAN placard onboard a 054A during an open-day in Hong Kong. Good that the DB has already included the ASROC for the 054A FFG.

Another key-point, A stealthier and sensor-upgraded Yu-7 lightweight torpedo successor unveiled:

Another apparently new weapon was a lightweight torpedo shown being launched from a surface ship. Most PLAN frigates and destroyers are fitted with triple 324 mm torpedo launch tubes, derived from the Italian Whitehead B-515 launcher. The new torpedo appears to be longer than the PLAN's standard Yu-7 lightweight torpedo, possibly with an extended homing and data processing section. Another notable difference is that the weapon seems to have a shrouded propulsor in place of the contra-rotating propellers on the Yu-7, which may significantly reduce the noise radiated by the torpedo, making detection more difficult.

This torp looks like it has replaced the Yu-7 on most Chinese surface combattants, and likely is also the payload of the CY-5. The new Y-8FQ MPA would also be equipped with this torpedo, in addition to the older Yu-7.

In an earlier post, I've already reported about the rumoured Yu-11 advanced lightweight ASW torpedo being commissioned in PLAN service, along with the new Yu-10 heavy torpedo as the successor of the previous Yu-6. We had the first pictures of the Yu-10 back then, and now I guess that this now might be the pictorial confirmation of the new Yu-11 lightweight ASW torpedo.

Looks like China was able to crack the source codes to the Su-30MKKs avionics:

PLAAF Su-30MKK was photographed with the new Chinese KG600 Self-Protection Jamming Pod. In addition to its original Russian Sorbtsiya/Gardeniya ECM pods.



Not a lot is known about the KG-600, aside that it is a quite recent offering first shown during the Zhuhai Airshow in 2014, and that it seems to be a successor of some sort to the KG-300G, which was exported to Pakistan along with the JF-17. On the other hand, as we can see, the KG-300G was still being offered at that time, termed to be a "smart jammer".



From the looks of it, we can see that the KG-600 has an air-intake, possibly part of its cooling system, indicating that it is a quite powerful system.

After a bit of digging, it appears that the KG-600 is already quite widespread in the PLAAF, being carried by the JH-7A and H-6M. From these instances, we could assume that this ECM-pod is optimized for protecting strike aircrafts against enemy SAM systems, as all warplanes carrying this pod are fullfilling the role of attackers or bombers in the Chinese Airforce.

Russian Navy Naval Aviation to Receive More than 50 New Sukhoi Su-30SM by 2020

"Su-30SM entered operational service with the naval aviation of Russian Navy in July 2014. Last year the Navy Naval aviation has inducted three Su-30SM, two more aircraft entered service on August 17 this year, three more will enter service in September and October 2015. It is planned that by 2020 Naval aviation of the Russian Navy will receive more than 50 Su-30SM" told Major General Igor Kozhin to RIA Novosti.

According to Kozhin, the procurement of Su-30SM will significantly enhance the ability of the Russian naval aviation groups. "With their great range, their air-refueling ability, their ability to deal with high-precision weapons for AAW, ASuW and air to ground, these Su-30SM fullfil the needs of naval aviation of the Russian Navy," - he said.

First Air Strike with GBU-12 Against ISIL in Iraq for French Navy ATL2 Maritime Patrol Aircraft

The Marine Nationale (French Navy) announced that one of its Atlantique 2 (ATL 2) Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) taking part in Operation Chammal (name of the French military operation in Iraq against ISIL) hit a target with a GBU-12 laser guided bomb. The strike mission which took place on August 19 2015 was a first for a French Navy MPA during Operation Chammal.

According to the French Navy, the ATL2 MPA joined two French Air Force (Armée de l'Air) Mirage 2000 around 22h00. Together they participated in a planned mission that led to the neutralization of a building belonging to terrorist group Daech. The building was used for transit operations and as a command and control post.
