And right next to the 1st Marine Division memorial is a memorial to the Japanese.

A very similar shaped arch was in front of the Yushukan War Memorial Museum in Tokyo.

Not my photo (internet) but you will see more of the Yushukan War Memorial Museum once I'm done with Palau/Peleliu. We spent 3 days in Tokyo on our way home.

Wow, it was a long time before the Japanese memorial was built - it makes sense though. That makes Nimitz's quote all the more powerful since he passed away about 30 years before the memorial was built!

I just finished reading "With the old breed" a few days ago and it renewed my interest for the Pacific theater, and I then stumbled on this thread. I rarely post on these forums, but I just wanted to thank you for sharing these pictures. Very moving and interesting to see the very place through your photos.

Thank you....I also visited Guadalcanal some 12 years ago as a side trip from our visit to Australia. I made a long thread of my adventures there on the WitP forum.

Before the North Dock we found the “Thousand Man Cave.” It’s called that because it housed approximately one thousand Japanese soldiers who defended this cave system.

Cleared Ground Demining removed nearly 600 explosive items of Japanese and American origin.

we keep going. The caves were cleared by the Americans using flame throwers and explosives.
