xAK Yamaura Maru, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage. The first working USN torpedo of the war finds one of my big fast Yusen transports… This was only one hex from Truk. Damage is 18 sys, 56 float (28 Major) and 1 of fire. She’s carrying part of the 6th Naval Construction Bn and will make Truk next turn to unload. Truk is a P6 with 448 Naval Support right now, so I’m hoping they can put the fire out before it gets worse. This ship will then spend a long time in port to repair as much as possible before moving back to Japan to fix the major damage.

Assaulting units: I have some small xAK/xAKL coming to ferry some of these units to nearby targets. Cagayan will serve as the forward staging area for SNLF operations to clear Mindanao and advance into the Celebes and Borneo over the next month or so. The clearance of the Philippine Islands will also happen in parallel, so the plan is to do a starburst of SNLF units on small boats from Cagayan.

15th Naval Guard Unit – prepped for Manado, not that it matters much with the amphib bonus but it will go there anyway.
144th Infantry Regiment – this Regt will help clear Mindanao, then move to Burma to reform the 55th Division.

7th Tank Regiment - some devices have been upgraded at Lingayen – T89A to T97 Medium Tanks. I just checked the database and the firepower ratings don’t improve, but the armour rating goes from 17 to 25. That should help with survivability in combat. While in the database, the Type 95 Light Tank (the only vehicle used by the 4th Tank Regt) only has an armour rating of 12, so while it is called a “tank” I will to try and remember to use the 4th Tank Regt more as an armoured car or scout unit.

Got it, 38th Div is part of 16th Army in game so it will move out of China with the other Hong Kong victors that can to Luzon, including the artillery and combat engineers.

This is my TS Ops Plan for keeping the Divisions of the Southern Expeditionary Army busy for the next 4-6 months.

The dates that the IJA achieved in real life are shown as par for the course, and I will judge my level of success against how I go against the historical dates.
It's a little harder to meet these deadlines in game because the Philippines and Dutch units don't surrender en masse when the capital falls, but this gives me some target dates to aim at.

The General Defence Army Divisions that I am going to work towards saving enough Political Points to buy out for use in the Southern Expeditionary Army Group are also shown, with the years that the later ones can be recombined as Divisions.

Repairs completed on AG Shuntai Maru at Nagasaki/Sasebo, ship returned to service – the first xAK and xAKL conversions are starting to become available for use. AG will move to ASW Div locations to rearm SC Divs.
Repairs completed on ACM Tatsumi Maru at Nagasaki/Sasebo, ship returned to service. More ACM are becoming available and they are moving to defensive minefield locations.

Mizuho-1 on CS Chitose converting to size 24 from 20 – CS Chitose is at CRB. It will take a few more week to resize all FP groups here and get them training. By then I will have naval search and fighters in 4th Fleet and SEAF areas so will then move both 24 capacity CS forward to resize the remaining FP groups in those areas.

I told CrackSabbath it was a cunning plan to get his defenders to burn through their supply stockpile, and I hope that he is now low on supply after firing so many AA shells at my unarmoured balsa wood Vals...

The Java Sea and South China Sea are packed with allied subs, but I have to keep pushing in this area.
There are now allied subs off most large ports in the Home Islands, but I am starting to get some of the IJN subs into position near the obvious allied convoy detinations in my 4th Fleet and SEAF areas.

The lull at Luzon is about to end with an IJA Division at each of Iba, Clark Field and Manila and another about to move into Clark.
The Singapore crossing is also close with 5th Div at Johore Bahru, 4th and 56th Divs moving there from Mersing.
Forces for the Palembang invasion are forming up at Cam Ranh Bay and will start reloading on amphib task forces tomorrow.

USS Marblehead was spotted at Port Moresby so all USN and RAN major fleet units may have left the DEI for the Coral Sea.
Mindanao is being cleared quickly with Nells based at Cagayan spotting no enemy ships along the Borneo coast.
Once Mindanao is clear, SNLFs will push quickly into the Celebes and Dutch Borneo.

The plan for KB over the next few weeks is for it to cover the Palembang landing then move to supoprt the Celebes/Borneo operations.

I don’t have enough ships or float planes but here’s what I’m trying to do to counter allied subs:

I’m using all SC in ASW Divs. The SC Ch boats are typically in groups of three and are either already hunting or are moving to the area. The smaller CHa boats are on ASW patrols in home waters.
I’ve just had a few AG Daigen conversions finish with many more coming, so they will move to forward bases like Miri and Singkawang to rearm SC and let me base SC divs in bases forward of CRB.

Im getting lots of contacts with allied subs from both planes and ships, but the main issue is that the experience levels of everything is so low they are very low % chance of getting a hit.

I’m using all DD that have ASW capability as CV/BB/CA/CL escorts and a few of the older DD classes as large TK/AO escorts. Some DD classes don’t have depth charges yet. The 0 ASW ships will take their ASW upgrades as soon as they are available. I have no spare DDs for dedicated ASW groups. Details of how I plan to use the DDs follow:

- DMS and APDs: old CL escorts in SNLF roles, ie: CL Katori class (1 already sunk) and the unique CL Yubari and CL Oyodo as they were not historically used as part of the main Battle Force.
- DDs Momo (2), Momi (8) and Wakatake (7) to Escort Force, mainly to protect the crucial TK convoys.
- DD Minekaze (13): CL escorts. As the IJN CLs are old and vulnerable on their own, I will mainly use them in SNLF fast transport roles and secondary role as surface combat task forces, generally in support of more powerful BB and CA task forces.
- DD Kamikaze (9): CVE escorts. I will also use the CVEs in support of SNLF operations.
- DD Mutsuki (12): CL escorts. Zero ASW capability until 2/42, so they will be used until then mixed in 2:2 with the DD Minekaze to escort my 6 x CL Fast Transport / Surface Combat task forces.
- DD Fubuki I/II/III (9/10/4): CA escorts, currently in three separate CA task forces with the Fubuki II and III split into 5/5/4 DDs. The Fubuki I are mixed in with the others to add their surface combat capability until they get depth charges.
- DD Hatsuharu (6): CVL escorts - all as one Div
- DD Shiratsuyu (10): CV escorts - currently all together with KB
- DD Asashio (10): BB Fuso and BB Ise class escorts - currently in two separate BB task forces
- DD Kagero (18 - 1 sunk already): CA escorts - currently in four separate CA task forces with 5/4/4/4 DDs each.
- DD Yugumo (2 +24 building): BB Nagato and BB Yamato class escorts
- DD Akitsuki (16 building): will join KB as additional CV escorts
- DDs Mutsu and Tachibana classes are less capable so may form DD only combat task forces, replace losses in Battle Force DDs, join the ASW Force or replace PBs on Convoy Escort duty. I am planning to build them all even though I don't want the war to continue long enough to need them!

The few E that start with depth charges are helping reorganise the TKs into their convoys, but I could use them as one or two ASW groups for the next few weeks until Palembang and Singapore are captured. I’ll do that and cross my fingers I don’t lose any!

I’m using PB to escort all other merchant convoys. Some conversions are close to giving me more PB. The PB I just lost to a Dutch sub was a big Ansyu, and at 10 points a pop I can’t afford to lose too many of them... they are worth more points than the USN DDs my subs have been hitting.

Capturing Java will be a big help as that will force the Dutch subs to base somewhere further away like Darwin, Perth or Colombo.

No additional repairs possible on SS I-171 using currently assigned resources at Kwajalein Island – this sub will move to the ARD at Truk to complete repairs. I’ve always wondered what the point of that ARD was, but this is the second IJN sub to need it so I’ve already answered my own question on that one twice now in two weeks of game time.

Dumanquilas is occupied by the Japanese – that’s good, saving me from having to land a small unit to capture it.
SS I-154 detects surfaced submarine at 52, 84 but it immediately dives – nearly another sub on sub action.

I/84th Naval Guard Unit arrives at Saipan – this unit is my planned Port Moresby naval guard. It will stay at Saipan until the other two sub-units arrive then reform as a full NGU. It looks like the allies are already reinforcing Port Moresby so by setting this unit to plan for Port Morseby I hope allied SigInt see that and keep a garrison there to defend against it. When I move on Port Moresby it will be with 2+ IJA Divisions plus support, but only after I get some more recon about what is defending the place.

Here's a snapshot of the situation on Malaya from 25 Dec 41:

China Theatre, Enemy Situation and Friendly Ops Plan:
A: 3 enemy units, 7500 troops. Previously defeated and pushed back from Paotow. Mongolia Garrison Army in pursuit
B: 4 enemy units, 35k troops. Mountain terrain, 3 x Divisions + 1 x IMB to push this force back towards Yenan.
C: 28 enemy units, 150-180k troops spread over four stacks. Tsiaotso is the largest stack that will be cut off once Loyang falls apart from withdrawing on the slow road to Sian. 1st Army needs to clear B then move to support C. Loyang should fall within 48 hours. 12th Army will be left to clear and garrison C. 20th Army will move SW immediately to help clear D.
D: 13 units, 110k troops. The Chinese have made no attempt to attack Sinyang yet. The 11th Army defenders at Sinyang should hold until 20th Army can link up from the north.
E: 10 enemy units, 100k+ troops. The Chinese are withdrawing to Patung and potentially further. One 11th Army Div with support is defending Ichang and pursued along the road one hex to the NW. This Div will not pursue further as it would leave Ichang exposed from the SW. An RGC unit will swap with the IJA Div and push to the Mountain hex East of Patung to set up an observation post and see what they can see from there.
F: 12 enemy units, 130k troops defending Changsha. 3 more units spotted at Siangtan. IJA deliberate attacks will start shortly to try and reduce forts. I will also restart aerial bombardments to assist. The 11th Army Division from D will move here once relieved by 20th Army.
G: 10 enemy units, 85k troops at Wenchow plus 6 units, 40k troops at Chuhsien. Deliberate attacks will start at Wenchow shortly. I don’t want to cut off and destroy these Chinese units so am deliberately leaving them a withdrawal route.
H: Not many Chinese units spotted down here as my air recon assets are currently focussed towards F and G. Kukong has 5 units, 24k troops. Pakhoi has 3 units, 12k troops and PT or MTB protecting the harbour. From previous days recon I know that Nanning has about 5 units, about 20k troops. 23rd Army is still under strength but garrison forces are moving to the China coast so that the 51st Division can concentrate and transition to offensive ops, Kukong the likely first target. Once G is cleared, 19th and 20th Divs while transfer to 23rd Army which will allow a move on the Nanning-Liuchow-Kweilin area.

Well, if you have an HR requiring PP for crossing borders, most CHI units are Permamently Restricted, so they can't go into Burma. I think there are only 3 or 4 div equivalents that can change HQ to leave CHI.

IF you don't have that in place … whoa … most allied players would do a major exodus into India and that creates a nightmare for the IJ. Ergo the common HR ...

The house rules are, there are no house rules!

The implications are that I can (have) moved lots of troops that were relaxing in Manchukuo to active service in China, so advantage Japan early war.
The flip side is that Chinese troops can move freely to Burma to help delay the Japanese there.
They can also move freely to India, where if left alone with sufficient supply and time they can train up to become 700+ AV Corps, quite a few with modern US equipment.

If I give the allies time to train up the British Indian Army, they too can march freely all the way to places like Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Fusan...

The result, I need to try and win the war by Jan 1944 at the latest.

Even though I haven’t done much by way of moving into Burma yet, it is going to be a crucial campaign.
If/when I can capture Burma, I don’t think I can afford to try and sit and hold it without pushing into India, but that may depend on the points situation when I get that far.
