He should have tried to at least taken the marsh belt running south of Leningrad to Vitebsk in 41. If you do that and just park an infantry corps along that marsh belt the Soviets are going to have a very difficult time doing anything up north. But I also think Leningrad is the better primary target than Moscow for the Germans in 41 in the first place.

Turn 77: July 31, 1942

In dramatic evens on the east front both Erwin Rommel and Georgy Zhukov are killed.
The Soviets lose one army and one mech corps as the Axis attack north through Kalinin.

The very first thing I do is run a cavalry corps to cut rail lines. The big question is, will the majority
of the Axis forces be out of supply next turn or will the partisan-cut rail lines get repaired first?

I save my turn here as I really need to know.

I'm going to continue the turn on the assumption Axis rail lines are not cut, hence we need to retreat and organize a coherent defense before those panzers run wild.
Our only objective now will be to defend while the Western Allies overrun Europe.

The Soviets also have 3 air units overrun this turn, and by now we're hurting.

First order of business in the west is to capture the undefended size 9 port at La Spezia.
With this in our hands Italy will fall soon.

In the end we settle on the following tactics: the UK outflanks the German positions in France,
while the US goes on a deep penetration towards and into Italy.

The US builds an armor corps.

And this is where I have a big problem with the game. Apparently it is not possible to send aid to Russia while their capital is surrounded.
This begs for a bug fix. I'll leave it at this for now, I assume Moscow will fall next turn.

Turn 78: August 14, 1942

A turn of drastic action sees Moscow fall and the Soviets lose two tank corps, one cavalry corps and one army.

The Soviets are now purely in defensive mode.

Southern front:

In the west the Axis is finally scrambling to set up some sort of coordinated defense,
but I think it is too late for Italy.
