asl3d wrote: Tue Jan 27, 2026 5:20 pm It is certainly true that the Allied air and naval superiority was a great help to the Allied troops who had just landed on the beaches of Normandy. However, in all the Overlord scenarios, I try to balance the forces involved so that there is a "reasonable" chance for the attacking side to win the scenario, although this is not always easy to achieve...
I appreciate you balancing it. Usually I like historical accuracy in games along with the imbalance, but in this game I think you are better to help out the Germans. I think for a wargamer, the frustration of a constant air and naval bombardment would be off-putting. I like your small battles for little towns and orchards with infantry fighting for buildings and trees.

The Ste. Mere-Eglise battle sounds very unusual with the Germans outnumbering the British by 4 to 1.
I am wondering about the AT gun in the aftermath. Which AT gun? Is it the 17 pounder that was no working earlier? That was a very dangerous gun. Must be lucky when they are not operating.

Thank you very much for your kind words.

Regarding the balance, I'd like to clarify that the odds ratio was calculated based on the Order of Battle value for each side, which includes the value of infantry units, teams, vehicles, and their Support Weapons (SW), and not on the total number of units for each side. This is because the quality of each unit varies and could affect the actual balance of each scenario.

Regarding your comment about "The Ste. Mere-Eglise battle," I don't quite understand it. The British didn't fight during the initial landings in the Ste. Mere-Eglise area. It was the Americans who participated in that specific area. Furthermore, if you're referring to the "Aftermath" of the "AC OVm ASL18" scenario, then the action takes place in the area of the village of Neuville-au-Plain, and the fighting was between American and German paratroopers. In this regard, the Americans had an anti-tank gun that disabled some of the support tanks of Company 3, 1058th Grenadier Regiment, 91st Airlanding Division.

Best regards.

Thanks for clarifying. Sorry yes I accidentally typed British instead of Americans at Ste. Mere-Eglise.
It sounds like a fun battle between the paratroopers. It's good you include all factors when deciding the ratio of strength.

That Maquis battle for the sleepy town of Tulle sounds very unpredictable. I guess poor Tulle will be riddled with small arms fire soon. The communist Maquis were nasty so I am cheering for the Germans to win this battle.

Although the battle for Tulle was far removed from the area depicted in Overlord, the Resistance nevertheless interpreted it as an opportunity to launch a diversionary action against the German forces. In reality, the German garrison in Tulle was of poor quality, consisting mainly of reservists and French forces loyal to the Vichy government.

The bad luck for the members of the Resistance who attacked Tulle, controlled and composed primarily of members of the French Communist Party, was that the 2nd SS Division "Das Reich" was being re-equipped at its base near Montauban and, following the Allied landings in Normandy, had received orders to quickly advance to the Western Front. The approach route to the front passed through Tulle...

Oh wow the battle for Vulle sounds very intriguing. I don't know about that history.

I found a large book in the library about the Vercors operation by SS mountain troops to flush out the french resistance up on the famous mountain plateau. It was small in troop #s compared to the frontlines but very interesting. The SS captain after the war made an art gallery in New York.

I found an Osprey book about it. I want to buy this one. I like Osprey cause they have nice pictures, maps and a detailed story.

Sounds like a fun infantry battle in Tulle. The German reservists did well despite low numbers against the untrained guerillas. Interesting how numbers slowly overcame the more professional trained soldiers. I supposed the German reservists were not well-trained but just adequate with radios to help.

I wonder what comes next? Hopefully the hapless remaining reservists in the 3 buildings can be rescued before the hooligans overwhelm them. Will the deadly Das Reich show up and tip the tide of battle decisively?

That's a good question.
