Operation Great Dragon consisted of two separate but related operations 1-Operation Pink Dragon, the invasion of Buin, which was quite successful, and 2- Operation Golden Dragon, the simultaneous invasion of Shortlands. Golden Dragon was delayed by the Japanese attempted invasion of Vella Lavella. The units assigned to Golden Dragon were nearby, and were able to repulse and destroy the invading Nip force. Later they were tasked to actually invade Shortlands, with the support of the 3rd USMC Paratroops
