Well, look at it this way. Inside of 1 week they have Christmas Eve, Christmas, Boxing Day (which I take it somehow involves Premier League matches and drinking), then New Years Eve and New Year Day.

Sounds a lot closer than that. It sounds like my neighbor with the $10K mailbox. His divorce is final so the imprisonment is over now. [:D]

Speaking of divorce, SG and I went down to Dana Point to see a band the Pocahantas Girl wanted us to see. We were late because SG had to work the hospital. She apologized to PG.

SG: Sorry we're late.

FAM: Hey, somebody has to work.

PG: Not me. [:D][:D][:D] (She has a big house with no mortgage and gets $15K a month tax free alimony and child support. I had to admit she was correct in her claim.)

You should try fighting a house fire at that temp, or believe it or not a compost heap/wildland fire. -41 F with a nice insulating layer of snow will allow the heat to build up. Gear, hoses, trucks all will freeze to you (there are some great pics of trucks iced up when someone decides a monitor is a good idea). Our SOP is to bring in a school bus to thaw your crews out so you can get the breather masks off - Ambulances fill up too fast. Single car wrecks at those temps have a higher percentage of fatalities because they are less likely to get reported (OnStar is a help with this) and even break downs can be fatal (had rancher friends whose truck broke down between Whitlash MT and Kevin, MT - he froze to death trying to walk for help, she died in the truck). If you mess up you can freeze your truck solid, split all the lines, valves, and wreck pumps. Worst is freezing hose to the street - it stays there (two months was the local record) till the thaw and everyone gets an extra speed bump and a reminder that you are an idiot.

Had a lovely Force 9 gale come through today coupled with a springtide meant the oggin was a bit high today.

While a student in upstate New York, went through a 4-5 week stretch of -10F nights and 0F to 10F days. Then, in late February, it finally warmed up to 25F. Wanted to grab my shorts and shades and go sunbathing!

When I was stationed at Offutt AFB we wore shorts and t-shirts to shovel our driveways when the temperature got up to 30.


Timely article in today's paper about Kenyans and their marathons. There was a tribe that was tired of the cheetahs killing their herds, so they chased the cheetahs. Those big cats are the world's fastest land animals, but only in spurts. After 4 miles the villagers caught up to the exhausted cats (which they captured and turned over to the wildlife officials).

Winnipeg is home for me, and I can assure you it is more hospitable than Mars.

Not warmer, I don't mean. But we have booze.

Factoring in the wind (which we like to do here because it makes us feel tough) it was -58F on New Years. No typo.

We were in for a rough spell today as well. Temperature plumeted to 70. Wind gust up to 2 mph.
