On the 20th the crazy plan to invade Burma neared it's conclusion. I began to create deception by hitting Bangkok, which doubles to close down a big airfield that could decimate my amphibs and surface forces.

The two TFs approach Rangoon still undetected. The 4Es will hit hard tomorrow if all flies. I hope to take out his surface forces before they move on Pegu. A force of three RN CL and two DDs will cover, with several other cruisers moving up with Hermes from Singapore. Hermes and the Martlets on CVE Long Island are the only air cover. A bit worried about that, but I'll be trying to knock out Tavoy, Moulmein and Chang Mai as well. He isn't basing much here now, and flying strikes out of damaged airfields after flying groups into them usually is a bad idea.

I'll post maps tomorrow. Still no change to the position of the KB (at Samah) or the movement of the CVs and fleet to Manila.

Chang Mai is because you with to March south and join up near Bangkok (eventually) ?

Chang Mai right now is to try and neutralise any airfield that can launch strikes to the Pegu invasion. The level 4 fields are Moulmein, Tavoy and Rangoon. The level 3 fields are Port Blair and Chang Mai. There are a few level 2 fields but I just have to let those go right now. Fingers crossed.

This should mean the (presumed) Thai troops in the valley and the Two IJA IDs at Lashio will be in a bad place. He can begin an airlift and get some out, but he's got a lot to deal with in Indochina, Malaya still, and soon, the PI. The IDs would have to walk to Mandalay or Toungou to start with, and hopefully by that time things will look a bit different in Burma.

Looks like Schwebo is empty, meaning the Chinese will take it and British base forces will rail in quickly.

Okay, so that was a false alarm. The B-17s don't go after the transfer and it seems like Rangoon was socked in anyway. This puts the invasion TFs in a bit of danger, but none of them show detection at all. [X(]

They're creeping about 4 hexes fro mRangoon now, and hopefully a bombardment will go in before the strikes tomorrow, reducing risk of a massive CAP up there. I've got a supply problem at Chittagong, dammit, and the P-38s can't use drop tanks. There is 15k in base and I simply forgot how much the AI decides the base "needs" when a lot of 4Es are suddenly present.

The P-38s will sweep Magwe, which shows 30+ fighters, instead of Rangoon. I'm hoping my extensive recon of the middle valley bases and recent neglect of Rangoon and surrounding pays off.

Got a decent first attack at Singkawang. Gotta clear the flanks and make sure there are no surprises here.

Cebu falls today. The Allied CV strike force again is tempted by a CAP trap, this time near Brunei. Lose about 10 Avengers, which I can't afford to lose. The fleet sails on though. MacCarthur is on board, and wouldn't stop for anything on this mission. It's the PI or bust. (He's of course keen to meet the previous version of himself, who is still there! ) [:D]

As shown here, the TFs are way out on a limb. The CVE Long Island is providing some air support, and Hermes will streak in just in time for the landings with more surface cover. Boise and Newcastle are also on their way, moving from Sabang tomorrow at flank.

Here is a look at the South China Sea an areas around it. The KB has left Samah and is taking an ominous path toward the SE. The Allied fleet will need at least three more days to reach Manila. I'm preparing LBA CAP which will transfer from Indochina. Included will be the new P-38F group plus tha usual P-39D and P40E.

There is still about 10k supply on the PI spread over the three bases there. I'll be dropping about 65k more, plus armor, arty, base forces and AA. Oh, and SW Pac HQ.

The 22nd is a good day for he Allies. The Pegu landing goes in without much disruption and will attack the lone (and roughed up) base force there. The IJN cruisers at Rangoon are nailed by 4Es, with Sendai taking a magazine shot and sinking early. The others took enough damage I'd be surprised to see a foray out, but cover is racing in from all sides just to make sure.

A few other small actions around Malaya, and the CVs progress without incident toward the PI. The fastest transports should begin unloading in another day if all goes well.

These ships were previously damaged and "trapped" after the Allies took control of Sumatra. He could have tried to push them through, but I guess wanted to take his chances. I'm sure he thought he could use them to thwart something in the area, but lack of search here let the Allies slip through without warning.

The 23rd is almost a disaster as four old IJN DDs attack the amphibs with CVE Long Island embedded. Amazingly, they are fought off by the mostly unguarded transports before Caradoc and two DDs intercept. The Long Island is not bad off, with 21 system damage after the battle.

Troops continued to land, the B-17s did their work at Chang Mai, and paras landed safely, combined with the tanks, and took Pegu!!

Over near the PI the Allied fleet still steams unhindered. It looks like all will get to Manilla within the next two turns. The CAP is flying in today and will include both operational P-38 groups. The CVs will stand off so as to neither get into a CAP trap or have Tojo sweeps diminish their own fighter cover.

At Saigon the forces have almost assembled to take the base. He has air groups still operating there, so I hope he doesn't see how much is actually on its way. [;)]

A scary moment.

As the Allied fleets get close to the PI the IJ unleash some LBA strikes. The escort is huge, for this point in the war, including IJAAF Tojos! Yikes. A few Bettys do get through the vaunted Allied CV CAP but no hits are scored. About five I-boats also make contact, hitting one DMS but finding the BBs and the CV TF during the night. This makes me very eager to pull the CVs away and let the Allied CAP at Manila and Clark take over, which they will tomorrow. I anticipate more and bigger strikes against the transports as they unload. One TF already made it in and the rest are passing Bataan.

Pegu is solidified and now has CAP installed as well as five Allied cruisers and twelve destroyers in hex, with the Hermes and Long Island still on station. The IJN tries one more incursion with the old DDs, but they can't get past the Newcastle and two DDs on patrol. About half of the troops have unloaded and the Brit division and Marines will begin to march toward Rangoon.

In the mop-up areas the Allies take Singkawang, struggle to approach Singora, but should eventually get through, and continue to bombard at Temuloh and Kluong against the big IJA stacks there. Forces should be in place at Saigon to attempt a DA there on the 26th.

Massive sweeps hit Manila as expected while the transports unload troops and supplies. The defenders do well on the day, with Tojos taking the biggest hit. The Allied CVs and surface fleet hang out near Puerto Princessa.

The Allies finally get the upper hand against a blocking force near Temuloh in Malaya.

I haven't mentioned China in a while. I've been keeping quiet but now that there has been action I can detail a few of the plans. The Chinese are moving some big filled out Corps to northern China to flank Peiping from the West. The Russians are moving down through Mongolia and will hit the North head on and also attack from the NE flank. The op is without air cover, but will include solid Russian AA units.

The first force to reach its destination appeared at the gates of Yenan a few days ago. Today they tried a DA against a regiment from the 26th division but only got a 1:2 in spite of numerical superiority. I'll wait and try again in a few days. The Russians won't engage for another 3-4 days. I'm curious whether he's spotted the movement yet.

I'll post some more wide ranging pics as things are starting to happen around the map I've not said much about.

As to the airframes, I wanted to "use up" the early airframes with the hope of a good exchange rate since I don't like ending up in the later game with 500 P-40E in the pools and not enough of the current airframes. It challenges the Japanese economy as well and forces some tough decisions.

Does he increase production of the Oscar and Zero, even though these will be obsolete by mid-war? Does he push for increased Tojo production early, and make large investments there?

It's a time when if you can engage, the Japanese are vulnerable since the airframes are fragile, don't have armor, and so you also can challenge whether they will use all of the best 80exp pilots early or put them away in TRACOM for later.

The P-40E and P-39D have always seemed overwhelmed early, but I knew there must be a way to get emoting out of them. it turns out that some combinations of planes at certain altitudes are slightly more effective, and keeping pilots, flying over my own bases, can also turn the corner on Japanese advantages.

The Hurris are in widespread use and are great for the top portion of CAP since they have a high ceiling and good guns. The IIa and the Canadian are my favourites. I also sweep with them.

Right now my airframe pools are empty, but that's the plan. I have enough groups that if something gets low I can rotate them out. (Except for SBD, which I would pay actual money for right now!). [;)]

Well, I fell a bit behind in this one. I'll do my best to catch up today.

Lowpe manages to sneak through some single DD TFs. They scoot through the straits and manage to avoid both the mines and CD guns installed on the chokepoint, and get to the Singers area where they avoid all combats. Good thing! I had some good amphibs here with no surface cover.

The big news is at Saigon, where after moving in 1600AV quickly, the Allies attack without having bombarded first, and easily take the base with a 3:1!! [&o]

The Japanese not only suffer heavy losses to ground troops, but have four air transport groups caught in base and destroyed. That's always good, and he has to buy them back.

Now it's on to Cam Ran Bay where the defenders are huddled up and under siege already.

In the PI unloading continues and big sweeps are met with tough resistance, the Japanese suffering heavy losses.

Here is a look a the situation. The unloading continues and will only need a day or two more at Manila. The IJN has some BBs hanging out on the Western side of Luzon, and the KB seems to be at Takao. Allied CVs hold back near Puerto Princess and try to dodge. I-boats.

In Burma unloading continues. Pegu is not a port, and after capture the amphibs are going VERY slowly. Troops begin to move on Rangoon and should capture it easily soon.

No action in the air on the 27th, as the Japanese must be refilling air groups. Unloading should finish in the night at Manila dn some TFs are already recombined to send empties back to Singers. The PI is re-supplied!!!

There is a better group of armor, arty and AA units now as well, so some offensive capability is present here. I'l aim to close the door to Clark Field from the North and move to Battambang with the hope of a campaign to take Aparri. That's a big dream for this stage, but not impossible considering the PI troops have been filling out and gaining experience in the constant bombardments here. Most are now over 50 experience.

In Saigon the final units capitulate or retreat, including Southern Army HQ which must be a shell of it's full TOE now.

The Chinese commenced a mini-campaign to threaten Yenan in the North by booting out a 1/3 of an IJ division. Nice!

I don't want to shock into Yenan just yet. It's not really an important base anyways. I'd like to see if these units can push to the NE and threaten to break into the plains. It'll take time, but harassing units are just nearby on the rails, and the Russians and more filled out Chinese Corps are moving in from the North. Opportunities may arise. [;)]
