Iki-shima, Tsushima and Fusan have some serious 40cm guns. Yura Strait and Hoyo have only 15cm

Here is what a 40.6 cm coastal gun might look like. (Not from the Paciific [:)])

Interesting...the 40cm guns at the three fortresses mentioned were destined for Akagi and Tosa which were not built (as BB's) due to the Washington Naval Treaty.

They used the actual twin turrets as gun emplacements and would have looked very similar to those on Nagato.
These were the first large-caliber guns designed entirely in Japan. They were mounted afloat only on the Nagato class, but had been planned for use on the Kaga, Amagi and Kii classes of the early 1920s, all of which were canceled as a result of the Washington Naval Limitation Treaty. Those completed guns and mountings intended for the canceled ships were then used for the modernization of the Nagato class during their 1930s rebuilds. One of the old turrets removed from Mutsu was installed as a static display at the Japanese Naval Academy at Etajima. Three twin turrets originally intended for Akagi and Tosa were instead used as coastal artillery, covering the southern entrance to the Sea of Japan on Tsushima, Ikishima and at Pusan, Korea.
These guns were generally similar to British wire wound guns of the time but were of lighter construction, being about an inch (25 mm) less
in diameter at the muzzle than the 15"/42 (38 cm) Mark I. This may indicate that they were not wire wound over their full length.
Used a Welin screw breech but with an Elswick 3-motion short-arm mechanism, which resembled that used on the British 18"/40 (46 cm) guns of
1917. The breech block needed to be withdrawn straight back into the carrier before it could be swung. A total of about 40 guns were
manufactured at the Kure and Muroran Ironworks.

OK, I looked it up. At its narrowest, the Tsushima Strait is 60 km..so if you split the distance from Tsushima to Iki-shima to maximize range to either battery you will be 30km or 18.6 miles out from both batteries.

That's 32,700 yds. At maximal elevation (43 degrees) the 40.6 guns on Nagato had a theoretical maximal range of 41,400 yds...so yes...theoretically...the 40.6 cm guns on Iki-shima and Tsushima could cover the strait. You might even get more range depending on the elevation above sea level of the battery.
Of course it would have to be pretty damn good visibility or radar control.

So, can you sail by in AE?

It depends.
Of course you could sail in... :-)

maybe a look at the other side of the world could be helpful?

I have been completely wrecked by infirmity for a week. First malaria and yellow fever and God knows what else from hanging out at FOB San Miguel...and then a tooth abscess.

Hory crap that is painful!

FAM: uhhhhhhhhhhhh. <writhing around like KSM during a CIA baptism>

Brother in law (dentist): You have an abscess. I'm going to have to put 18 shots in your gums and 12 in your palate and then drill till we hit bone.

FAM: OK

He did marry my complainingest sister but did not seek my advice first so that is his problem.

To his credit it hurts much less today. Now it's just the malaria and yellow fever and whooping cough and scurvey...although now I have to go see and endodontist and get 18 more gum shots and 12 palatal shots.

He wrote down "brother-in-law" on the referral. I wonder if that is some secret dentist code for "hurt the baaaastard...bad"

Did you notice the notation "Difficult Patient" when you read your chart upside down at the reception desk?

[:D] Although they may have spelled it w-u-s-s.

Cap, by any chance was that abscess caused by grinding your teeth as you worked with the new computerized medical records system,
or submitted your California Tax on Responsible Adults? In the former case, you should be able to claim worker's compensation and
in the latter case, a tax deduction equal to your pain and suffering. We'll all be your witnesses! [;)]

I called the endodontist to schedule an appointment today.

Hot blonde receptionist (I imagine): Do you know which tooth we will be working on Mr. Mandrake?

FAM Yeah, one of mine.

<She actually laughed but recovered quickly>

Hot blonde receptionist (I imagine): Do you have dental insurance Mr. Mandrake?

<OK, end of mirthmaking...she is probably not that cute anyway>

Naw, I had that tooth filled years ago...then the filling fell out...so it was rotorootered out again and a bigger filling applied...then the tooth cracked...so I needed a root canal with a temporary filling...then I waited 7 years <nobody told me that was too long>..so now another rotorooter and a new temp filling and now that has to be drilled out again next week and I need to have any microscopic cracks filled then recapped...then I go back in August to have the cap drilled out again and a permanent crown applied.

I reminded of the Seinfeld joke: "The only difference between Josef Mengele and my dentist are the magazines in the lobby" [:D][:D]

When I was a medical student there was this homeless alcoholic guy with advanced diabetes, no teeth and a bad infection on his gangrenous big
toe. We are pumping him full of antibiotics, spending thousands to save his toe and everyday at rounds he asks:

Mr. Jones: Hey Doc, do I get to go home <sic> today?

Chief Resident: No, sorry Mr. Jones. We need to get your blood sugar under 200.

Mr. Jones: Aww Doc, just cut it offfff <sprays spit out through missing teeth..then smiles broadly> I don't need it.

Guy was an amazingly happy fellow. Didn't matter to him how many toes he had. I am beginning to understand his philosoffffy.

Well Captain, I have the movie for you. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074860/?ref_=nv_sr_1
