Who knows the mind of the devious one......Who knows what evil lurks in the heart of men.  Who knows?  The Shadow knows.  I have no idea, but expect that Rota was not Admiral Wa's guess.  But a good choice by you in my view.  A fighter base should spring up nearly immediately and those seasbees will have bombers spewing from it in no time.
 
No mines encounterted at any location you bombarded?  Hummmm, interesting.  I would have expected Siapan and Guam to have been heavily mined.
 
And just where are those mighty CVs?  They could be invasion interruptus.  No turkey shoot for you, admiral.  If he does commit them, they will come with well trained pilots, not the second team bozos that real life Admiral Spurance faced.

I too suspect that those bases are heavily mined, and recon has consistently been showing 3 or 4 ACM at Saipan, which indicates too many mines to contemplate. I've found that bombardments rarely encounter mines. Perhaps the range setting when bombarding has a great influence? For Saipan I used 20,000 yds and the others were 15,000. In discussions about this I think I recall the devs mentioning that defensive mines are considered to be in the vicinity of the base. I know that invasions seem to always find them, while TFs far at sea (SCTF, air combat) never do.

No data on the Imperial carriers. It's just been too long since their location was last fixed. That's the biggest reason for the focus on shutting down the big bases, and PBYs will be on duty to scout N & NE as soon as the base is captured. The fact that I bombarded the three populated airfields (and the only ones > size 1) in the lower Marianas should provide him with no data about the identity of the target. The position of the Allied armada (across the two hexes) probably will mitigate for either Rota or Guam, but certainly does not rule out Tinian or Saipan. I should only need the first turn (the current one) to get a fast-winning force ashore. So if the IJN carriers do pop up but are out of position for an 8-hex strike, I could even pull back and leave them playing with USN subs while my surface forces rearm. He knows that I have subs covering a broad area beyond search range, and so would have to travel in stealth mode there if he wanted to arrive unnoticed. That would make the carriers more vulnerable to subs. My guess is that the carriers will be saved for defense of targets farther west. After all, the Marianas will not be useful to hit the Home Islands until another year when the Pacific B-29 groups arrive. He knows I'll be very active in the meantime.

An APA convoy is already en route with 10x SeaBee Bns, and two convoys each with a USA base force (72x AV each). Other support troops are at sea also, and more at Truk. Due to the force disparity we should see on Rota, the support troops will probably be a few days behind the capture. The PBY group will move in upon capture with two AVD a couple of days behind. Two elite (for me) P-47 squadrons are resting awaiting transfer. Several Corsair squadrons are also available, but more than the two Thud groups will have to wait for building. Various support ships will also move up from Truk for rearming CA and smaller, and I forgot to look but I should move up AGP to get some PT boats operating. Also at Truk are some combat engineers and a cavalry Rgt that will (at least early on) serve as defensive units on Rota in case of any creative plays sent in to the team by DAW. This will allow all the assaulting combat forces to be pulled off to make maximum room for base building and staffing.

I'm guessing that fortifications on Rota will be minor due to lack of dedicated engineers. The fact that the base at Guam remained damaged at 22% (prior to the last bombardment) tells that either 1) engineers have not yet made it there to build fortifications, or 2) engineers have finished building maximum fortifications there and moved on. A number 1 would be a nice relief, but I expect a stinky number 2.

Our force already has full supply - the sea lift to Burma is truly massive - and need only ready themselves for the next attack. One Allied Bn was destroyed in the attack, and (depending on time of recovery) up to 3 Allied Rgt will arrive for the next attack. A Bn also arrived at the scene too late for today's attack. Meanwhile the IJN surface forces at sea have disappeared from view. Damage shown is Guam airfield 82% (f:7 b:2 a:3), Tinian airfield 16% (f:13 b:0 a:0), Saipan airfield 23% (f:28 b:5 a:3). Pagan will be bombarded tonight by a group built around 3x modern CL. With 4x AR scouted as in port, the hope is to hit the anchorage.

The troops are ashore at Rota looking like they just stepped off of a cruise ship, with ~3% fatigue and all 0% disruption. The only reason that a shock attack has not been ordered is that some units are less than 100% prepared. A deliberate attack should do quite well. One CA group will bombard. No minefield was encountered upon landing, but I'm sure that Saipan will make up for that. Some ships finish unloading supply at Rota while others convoy back to Truk to pick up some of those combat engineers for dual defense/building duty after capture. Another convoy has formed at Truk to carry an air HQ to Rota as soon as it is loaded.

Over night our subs got a merchant in the DEI, and an IJN sub off the coast of lower Burma.

More of the same in China. Supply NE of Tsuyung is still lacking.

Still waiting for disruption to fall adequately SW of Toungoo, meanwhile bombing the Imperial troops there to keep them as unready as possible. The ground bombardments continued at Rangoon and near Prome as supply-denial missions. I do hope those bombardments are not turning the enemy troops into super-experienced conans. It looks as though getting disruption down in the battle hex will allow all three reinforcing brigades to make the next attack.

The naval bombardments of Rota and Pagan went well, but the anchorage at Pagan was untouched. The ground assault on Rota blew through the defenses.

The convoys with the 10x USN construction Bns and the Forward Air CentPac HQ will both arrive during the 2nd naval movement phase tomorrow and might begin unloading then. Likewise the two AVD will make port. The two P-47 squadrons have moved in with orders to take up CAP duties and a 12-plane PBY squadron has moved in to begin search. The combat troops look as if they haven't even been in battle and will continue attacking to clear the island.

Guam shows 93% airfield damage, Tinian 9% and Saipan 9%, with Pagan to the north at 17% plus 1% port damage. It'll take a little bit to get the first wave of the Guam forces ready for landing, as they are in the Solomons, on New Ireland, in the Admiralty Islands, and on New Guinea. Those units with 100% preparation will land in the first wave and sit there, fully able to defend themselves, until the second wave is brought in. At that point the assault will commence.

North of the Marianas Amberjack and Gato teamed up to take out first an E escort then a tanker.

The troops SE of Kunming are getting more effective attention from the air and suffering accordingly. But the troops NE of Tsuyung now have loads of supply and will attack tomorrow. As the enemy position has been reinforced, a tough day is expected.

The bombardment of Moulmein was wimpy and seemed to only harm the air it passed through. A group of Bettys with escort tried to hit the CL on its way out but were treated badly by CAP from Bassein, Prome, and/or Ramree Island. The troops SW of Toungoo are down to teens and single digits for disruption. Less than ideal but recent experience showed it difficult to get them much lower in any reasonable amount of time. So, they will attack tomorrow. Two Bdes that made the hex but are still in the wrong mode will refrain from attacking. That just means they will be fresh for next time (along with the Bde yet to arrive). A total of 3,043 AV (plus or minus changes during the turn) will participate in the attack.

Bombardment of Tinian went well enough, and bombardment of Saipan hit the aircraft revetment areas nicely. Rota has been cleared of enemy forces.

Tojos from Saipan actually swept Rota, but were wiped out. I suspect that only a few got off the ground after the naval bombardment. The two divisions and the USMC armor on Rota has begun preparing for Saipan. Guam is next, with Saipan after that, then Tinian, then Pagan. I think Saipan will be harder on ships but there are already lots of troops prepared for it, while moving on Tinian first would entail waiting for adequate forces to prepare. All of that depends on how cooperative the 30,000 Imperial troops on Guam prove to be. The convoys with the construction Bns and air HQ arrived at Rota but did not begin unloading. The two divisions ashore will pass them on the docks as they load up for R&R.

CV Enterprise has refueled at Pearl Harbor and is on her way to Truk.

Well planned, well executed and well done at Rota, admiral.  No KB interference.  That surprises me a bit.  H emay yet commit them in the Mariannas, but there is a time when commiting them is little more than a nuisance.  I think the Mariannas is the last chance for a meaningful KB effort.  The Devious One may have plans that are inscrutible but to all save he.

In Burma the attack got better odds than last time, but far worse casualties. I presume that is the impact of higher disruption. As soon as our troops are ready, they will attack again. A couple of small units are being pulled back to Toungoo to recover. There is again movement seen at Rangoon, one or more units moving east toward Pegu. So in spite of the high casualties we incurred, this point of attack might be close to a breakthrough. Although our troops have disruption too high to attack, it looks lower than last time overall, so I am hoping it will come down faster.

Well planned, well executed and well done at Rota, admiral. No KB interference. That surprises me a bit. H emay yet commit them in the Mariannas, but there is a time when commiting them is little more than a nuisance. I think the Mariannas is the last chance for a meaningful KB effort. The Devious One may have plans that are inscrutible but to all save he.

IJN subs placed mines at Babeldaob but they were detected and removed without causing harm. Except to Japanese sub RO-108.

The CL heading to bombard Rangoon was ambushed by a sub, one of apparently three that lay in the path of the brave Allied bombarders. CL Ceylon was hit twice by the sub and twice by Bettys in the afternoon, having escaped the morning attacks, before sinking.

The bombardments of Moulmein, Saipan, and Guam all went well.

The troops NE of Tsuyung are well supplied but the two non-Chinese divisions are still badly disrupted. One enemy unit has left the hex to the east, but another is approaching from that direction, and possibly is armoured.

Tomorrow all but 32 AV out of the 3,012 AV SW of Toungoo will attack. Fatigue could be lower, many units have disruption in the teens, and another Bde is still on the way, but attacking now will allow time for another go before any Imperial reinforcements can arrive on scene. The aerial bombing will continue with the addition that the B-24 groups, temporarily diverted to the battle NE of Tsuyung, will be back on task and at a mere 5,000 ft. Heavy flak is expected.

Biak and Rota airfields both reached size 2 today, and Rota will reach size 3 tomorrow. The divisions are off Rota and a base force will begin unloading. Other support on the way as noted previously.

Over night, a DE on ASW duty in our Burma Bombardment Lane savaged an IJN submarine. East of the northern Philippines a sub got an xAP, direction of travel unknown.

Same goings on in China, with the troops NE of Tsuyung recovering.

The troops SW of Toungoo are also recovering, likely needing at least two more days before attacking again. Three units with the most recovering to do have been placed into reserve mode to see if that speeds recovery. Meanwhile the Imperial unit moving has passed from Rangoon to Pegu, so tonight Pegu and Moulmein will be bombarded from the sea. Imperial AV at Rangoon went from 1,740 to 1,502. From comparing combat reports, it looks like the 40th Inf Group Brigade has left Rangoon, and must be presumed to be on its way to the battle line SW of Toungoo.

Yesterday a convoy was seen north of the Marianas. Most of the Empire's fighters also seemed to have moved north to the (somewhat) safer environs of Pagan airfield. Our bombardment of Pagan got things rolling, then sweeps by the P-47 groups at Rota took out a large number of airborne Tojos. The carrier strikes on the convoy lost only 1 Hellcat. A 4x DD TF is heading to Agrihan tonight to try and catch 3x E vessels seen surviving there.

B-24 groups put a total of 18 air base supply hits (plus other hits) on Woleai and left the air base showing 45% damaged. This is important to stop any future surprise sniping on our SLOC between New Guinea and the Marianas.

A CVL arrived at the Panama Canal, a CVE at Portland, and another B-24J group (from the US) made it to the line at Dimapur to join supporting the battles in Burma and China.

A busy day as the Empire strikes back... a little. But comes up empty. Our subs got another xAP east of the northern Philippines and, later in the day, a tanker in the DEI. Meanwhile Allied ASW forces gave Imperial subs fits. Our naval bombardments went well, especially against Burma where they achieved 6 supply hits between them. One problem we have in SEAC is that the cruisers are being worn down fast by both subs and sea. Considering that plus the enemy carriers' visit, we have more of them in repair yards than at sea. Those will have to do for now, because no more cruisers arrive in SEAC until March of '44. We will get two battleships and a battlecruiser before the end of the year, but those valuable ships come with more limitations than cruisers carry.

NE of Tsuyung our forces have recovered disruption and fatigue quite nicely and are nearly fully supplied. While they certainly have enough supply to attack, the 27th ID is 111 infantry squads down and has another 56 disabled. AV for the division stands at 156, a great improvement over a couple of days ago. The air above that battle hex continues to see Imperial fighter sweeps nibbling away at P-38 LRCAP from nearby Tsuyung. We'll try a little rearrangement for tomorrow.

In the air above the battle hex SW of Toungoo is where the real action took place. The Empire staged fighters into Rangoon and, combined with fighters from Chiang Mai and Moulmein, made many sweeps over our troops and placed CAP over their own. While we made more aces than we lost, the pilot casualties for today were heavy at13 MIA, 6 WIA (3 aces), and 22 KIA (3 aces). Here are today sweeps and strikes on that hex.

The troops SW of Toungoo are doing much better, with only one unit having disruption greater then the teens. Very few have disruption in single digits, however. Perhaps today's air battles will boost morale?

Our own sweeps over Pagan netted about half a dozen Tojos but an accurate count is hard to come by. The destroyer TF sent to Agrihan came up empty, as the remnants of that convoy were seen more than 200 nm to the north. With Pagan being so effectively swept about 25 fighters seem to have made their way back to Saipan. Woleai took another beating from the air. Enterprise is passing just north of the Marshall Islands. Another CVE arrived at Portland. Prince of Wales should arrive at Cape Town in 21 days.

That tanker torpedoing was interesting, as even without air coverage contact has been made with three TFs there: 4 ships = 4x SC; 4 ships = 3x TK; and 5 ships = 2x CVE, 2x TK. They are heading east 'round the corner of SE Borneo possibly heading for Balikpapan, and so are empty, explaining the lack of fire aboard the torpedoed tanker. If headed for Balikpapan there are at least two more subs in their way.

This seems an odd place for a tanker convoy headed east. The contact south of Davao is seen as 4x PG. Call it likely that the TF near Leyte are IJN carriers. 28 hexes from Rota, and 12 hexes from Babeldaob. The juiciest target at Babeldaob is a convoy of 5x USN Patoka class fleet oilers, 9,820 tons capacity, offloading fuel for the submarines and destroyers now based there. Of course there are also a number of auxiliaries at anchor. A total of three 4x DD ASW TFs are pulling back to the base and assuming a surface combat stance, along with two PT boat squadrons on duty. A convoy with part of the USA 37th Infantry Division that did not load with the main body of that unit is just leaving for New Guinea, but is made up of slow 12 and 13 knot ships. The convoy is not known to be spotted and so might make it away without being engaged. A transport is two days out with a 72-air support HQ but will hold at sea. That leaves the base a bit tight on air support to bring in more fighters, so the two DB squadrons are being pulled out and one small one brought in. That makes room to add two more Corsair squadrons. The base display shows a flak score of 24.

Over the battle hex SW of Toungoo in Burma the air battle continued but was much smaller, and still lopsided in our favor. CL Caradoc made an ineffectual bombardment of Moulmein, but CA Dorsetshire was on exactly on target at Pegu, hitting the very unit we wished to engage.

They appear to still be at Pegu, and will be bombarded by 3x DD tonight as cruisers are scarce. When they do make the open country to the north, we will hit them with the B-24 groups. The troops SW of Toungoo are in much better shape, but we will wait longer to improve as much as possible before attacking. My presumption is that we will get in one more attack before the 40th arrives to reinforce the Empire's forest orcs. Caradoc was beset by angry, but ably assisted by friends.

Basically nothing happened at Babeldaob or elsewhere in the Philippine Sea. It is possible that those were carriers, and having been sighted, DAW HQ pulled them back. Both they and the TF to the south have vanished. Of course the weather in the area is overcast to extreme overcast, so they might be bearing down on the Marianas as we speak. BB Oklahoma hit Saipan over night, keeping the naval fortress there honest and sleepless.

The aerial bombing of the troops SE of Kunming is beyond annoying, it is annihilating. A breakthrough in Burma is really necessary to provide relief in the mountains of China.

To that end, the attack is on for tomorrow SW of Toungoo. The Imperial 40th, despite two days of successful bombardment, is now seen on the road between Pegu and the battle hex. The P-47 groups will sweep above that unit, while two B-24 groups (one newly arrived) will bomb from 5,000 ft. The other B-24 groups (and other groups) will continue to strike the troops in the battle hex. AV in the hex is back up to 2,892, disruption of all units is in the teens and single digits.

The bad news is that a series of three Imperial convoys is moving northward along the Burma peninsula. Two are merchant convoys and the third is unknown, only a DD identified in that one. One merchant group is 1 hex NW Mergui, the other two hexes WNW Victoria Point in company with the unknown TF. A force of 3x DD will try to intercept the first merchant convoy at Mergui. An Imperial carrier has been identified 2 hexes ESE of Medan - with this early warning of their approach, perhaps our subs will have better chances at them. Is it possible that the 'tankers' seen to the east of the Philippines were indeed tankers, showing themselves on the edge of Allied search in the hope of being misidentified, thereby increasing the chances of surprise in the Andaman Sea?

More troops have landed at Milne bay, and more are on the way. Rota airfield is now size 4. 6 is maximum but will take longer. Rounding up the herd for Guam. 11 units in the first wave and 7 units in the second wave, not counting the command HQ (heading to Rota) nor the amphib force HQ (to aid unloading). Naturally, as many extra supply as we can manage will be landed with them.

There are still fires burning at both Rangoon and Moulmein, which is a good thing as those will be the last bombardments there for a while. The Imperial convoy went to Tavoy instead of Mergui, so our 3x DD force missed them. That was still part of the 'good news' for the RN.
